Mr. B. Was a weird, and quiet, single old man, who seemed mostly harmless. He had a cat, and for the first few months, all he did was sit in his office and read and leave Zevia to take care of herself. As she got older, however, and as the child services officers started visiting to check up on them less and less, he became a lot more of a hands-on figure in the household. There was one light to all of this, however- Her uncle Mick. (He'd been introduced to her at 3, during a visit, as her uncle, when he couldn't bring himself to say he was her father, and not take her home.) Mick was a cool ol' man who lived in his camper and did whatever uncles probably do. He would come by on holidays, and every so often, and they'd sometimes go fishing or he'd just take her to the park. Usually often somewhere out of that house, as Mr. B. Didn't really like going places. At all. And Cassie couldn't go off by herself of course, so most of the time, this wild child was trapped. Having that little bit of freedom with her uncle gave her at least something to look forward to.

When Cassie reached the of 14, things finally came to a head. Mick had been trying to visit for weeks. Every single time, Mr. B. had an excuse for why he couldn't see her."Oh, she's very ill. Can't have visitors." "She's hurt and she doesn't want to see anybody."And then, suddenly, Cassie wasn't allowed to talk on the phone. That's when Mick decided he'd make a surprise visit.

June 13th, 1989, Mick Mundy barged in through the half-open front door of Mr. B's shoddy apartment flat, to find him in a very incriminating position. He'd just pulled his pants up, and was stood in front of Cassie, who was sat on the sofa, with a blanket wrapped around her lower half.

From where he was standing, Mick couldn't see her face, but he could hear her hyperventilating.

"What the bloody hell did I just walk in on?" Mick yelled.

Mr. B would jump back and try to explain, while trying to shove Cassie out of the room.

But Mick had had enough of this. In one swift motion, without a singular second thought, he pulled his rifle off his back, and fired, right into the back of his head as he turned away.

Cassie had run out of the room just before this, and therefore hadn't witnessed any of it.

The next thing Cassie knew, she was dressed, wrapped in a sweater and a blanket, and being carried by Mick out into the warm summer evening to his van.

She wasn't scared, because she knew Mick wouldn't hurt her.

She was just numb.
