Quitting while ahead

He doesn't think it's a rude thing to say in front of a monster. There are no rude things to say to monsters, only rude things monsters say.

"Don't worry," she says between bites, "You're one of the good ones."

"But I am still a monster," I do not say. I do not say that I love my claws and teeth, my prehensile shadow and my glowing eyes. That I cannot imagine giving them up even for survival, that to hide my shadow and trim my claws for them makes me feel diminished. In public I cannot say that I do not wish to be human.

They're progressives, this bunch, even if he carries a hero's banner with its proud history and none of them ask him to put it away. They know there are good monsters, monsters who can speak eloquently and hold the fork right, monsters you can be seen with in public. Some of their best friends are monsters.

They do not know the monster who is invited to brunch knows solidarity with the monster who is not. Believes and understands the monster who is not invited more than the human who does the inviting.

"Isn't that a little harsh?" says a third human, and I have not forgotten I am outnumbered. "We have ways of killing monsters without blood now, painlessly. And, of course, a monster should be allowed to live if it never growls."

He has never seen me growl. Yet how loudly and endlessly I will, when I'm out of earshot. He's talking about killing monsters who cannot stoop to civility, about mother and brother and lover who were never able to mute themselves like me, and does he not know how small a child who can only growl is?

AFTG TIMELINE

1995: Kayleigh Day dies and Kevin (9) is acquired by Tetsuji.

1997: Matt (10/11) starts taking drugs, this continues for a few years.

1998: Mary runs away with Neil (10).

Renee (15) is arrested.

1998-2000: sometime here Nicky (15-17) is sent to conversion camp

November/December 1999: The twins (13) find out about each other. Tilda begins hitting Aaron.

Late 1999 - early 2000: Allison (14) is hospitalized for bulimia.

March 2000: Andrew (14) is sent to juvie.

May 2000: Aaron (14) and Tilda move to Columbia.

Summer 2000: Nicky (17) goes to Germany.

Neil (12) moves from Germany to Switzerland.

for comparison: Thea’s first season as a Raven began in summer 2000. Kevin is 14.

2001: Jean Moreau (14) is sold to Tetsuji.

Luther finds out about Andrew, six months later (late 2001- early 2002) the twins(~15) meet.

Renee (17) gets adopted by Stephanie.

2001-2003: Kevin (15-17) discovers Kayleigh’s letter sometime around here.

2002: Kevin and Riko probably got their numbers tatooed in 2002 (Most places will only tattoo someone from 16 or older, with parental authorisation).

Spring/Summer 2003: Andrew (16) leaves juvie and moves in with Aaron and Tilda.

Summer/Fall 2003: Tilda dies five months after Andrew moves in and Nicky (20) goes back to Columbia to be with the twins.

Dan (18), Renee (20) and Allison’s (17-18) first season on the Foxes line.

Neil (15) is in Canada.

Winter 2003? Noah Knox/Wiltshire dies on the same night as Jeremy's (18) first banquet (freshman year).

2003: sometime in 2003 Kevin (17) and Riko (17-18??) meet Jeremy (18) post Trojan game. Kevin and Jeremy exchange numbers.

2004: This might be when Cat joined the Trojans as she's a junior in TSC.

Early 2004: Nicky (20-21) is attacked and Andrew (17) is put on medication.

Fall/Winter 2004: Kevin (18) offers a spot at the Ravens to Andrew. Riko and Aaron are also present.

Winter 2004 - early 2005: Wymack offers a spot on the Foxes team to the cousins (18 and 21).

Summer 2005: The cousin’s first Foxes exy season (18 and 22).

Mary is murdered. Neil (17/18) moves to Millport.

December 2005: Kevin (19) gets his hand broken.

the kevin and neil parallels make me sickkk. both running so hard from their past, and scared of losing the fragile lives they’ve made with the foxes. both are slowly realizing that surviving doesn’t have to mean they do it alone. and none of it would hold together without andrew at the center of it, telling them to stay.

kevin:

"I want to stay," Kevin said. "I'll ask you again: don't let him take me away." ... "It'll be fine," Andrew said. "I promised, didn't I? Don't you believe me?" It took a while, but at last Kevin visibly relaxed. The dead edge melted out of his eyes as he absorbed every ounce of strength Andrew could give him.

neil:

"If you tell me to leave, I'll go." ... "You aren't going anywhere. You're staying with us. If they try to take you away they will lose." It felt like coming home, and it was enough to take the edge off his fear.
