You just assume that some people looked into it, and also have half-heard something about brains stopping to develop at age 21 or 25 or maybe 32. Not that you actually read what that was about, but you have heard someone referencing it, so you assume it is right. Which it is not. Measurement systems though. While I do think some of them can be fascinating, and honestly, I wind up using cubits quite a bit, absolutely nothing but metric should be used in any industry.

I've worked as a mechanic in the US, and you have to buy two sets of every tool. Twice the cost, twice the weight, twice the space, twice the shit to have to deal with. It's a pain in the ass.

Many of the vehicles I've worked on were built by different companies, in the sense that the CAT powertrain was all metric, but then the chassis is US standard, so the coolant tubes to the radiator have to be a fucking special little snowflake part, at greatly enhanced cost, so they can bridge the metric/sae sizing gap. Instead of being a big standard size of tube I can cut off a roll at 72 cents a meter.

This mishmash bullshit has other knock-on effects. Bad mechanics who get their shit mixed up will jam an SAE bolt in a metric hole, or vice versa. They're often are sized closely enough to mate the first couple threads, and then they slam it home with an impact gun. Gets it out of their shop, sure. Fucks up the threads, fucks up the bolt, fucks up the correct torque, which leads to gasket and other failures.

So then in two months when your brand-new water pump is failing and I can't get the last bolt off because it's in a cunt spot and the cocksucker who worked on it last stripped the head clean to round because it was the wrong size and I have to grind it out with a goddamn hand file because nothing else I have will fucking FIT.

did you know that the Yam languages, spoken in Papua New Guinea, use base 6 for yam-counting, something significant to local cultures? meanwhile, metric is entirely based around decimal, and has therefore likely contributed to the suppression of indigenous practices like these. measurement systems other than metric aren't just quirky artifacts, and i worry that many folks accept too readily the imperialist narrative that metric is the only rational system to use, even when they are critical of other tools of imperialism.

I don't think the exact size of bolt, board, or pipe is terribly culturally relevant.

A fitting from one factory should fit easily with one from a factory in a completely different location. The tools should all be the same. I think there needs to be more standardization in cars across the board, like there fucking used to be-the alternator and distributor cap in my old shitty ford taurus fit just the same on multiple DOZENS of models of cars of that era. Now you need a goddamn subscription license to swap out a headlight (all proprietary, a massive fucking cluster, too bright, and sixty fucking dollars, as opposed to the old cheap, shitty, $5 enclosed glass bulb that was the same in every car) without putting the piece of shit in "safety" mode-actually a wildly dangerous contrivance made up just to fuck people over.
