Imagine for a second you are Adrian surname The Eridian. Your spouse has been missing and presumed dead for around a decade, and suddenly one day an alien spaceship comes into orbit. And you cheer "Yay alien species have realized we have the same problem and have come to either give us a solution or join or efforts, too bad my mate is still gone."

Except he is not actually gone, because the eridian equivalent of a carebear decided to save them. And he doesn't want anything in return, in fact he is well aware that he might die A PAINFUL SLOW DEATH, shortly after fighting just to get the love of your life back to you. “I still remember the first time that he came tumbling in looking for you. It was all arms, and legs, and blond hair, and finally, those eyes right there.” He pointed at the excitement of the birthday photo beside it, where Anakin was looking at her, and Padmé was staring at the cake. “Mr. Naberrie, do you know where Padmé is? I can’t live without her.” Her heart flipped, and he smiled.

“I’m sure he wasn’t being serious.”

“Was as serious as a heart attack.” Padmé lifted her head, and he smiled at her. “I always liked that kid.” The tenor of his statement felt like it was a bit much, and she shook her head.

“We’re friends, Daddy, it’s not like that.”

“Ok.”

This dark-haired stranger isn’t just ridiculously beautiful — she’s also focused in a way that makes everything else feel somewhat unreal.

For a second? Anakin forgets how to exist in a conversation… or at all. “Hi,” is all he manages as their gazes lock for perhaps a beat too long.

Her mouth curves, curious but still polite. “Hello.”

Forget-Me-Not

Nubian forget-me-nots were one of Padmé’s favorite flowers.

She always kept them on her desk in her office on Coruscant, in a little vase Sola had gifted her shortly after she became Queen of Naboo. They often stayed there long after they had wilted, mostly because she was too busy to change them out with fresh ones the majority of the time, but also because she didn’t think she could bear the sight of that vase being empty. She’d rather look at dead flowers than no flowers.

If she was asked her favourite flower, however, Nubian forget-me-nots was rarely what came out of her mouth. She’d say Queen’s Hearts, specifically the red ones, or millaflowers, or the Coruscanti teaflowers she and Anakin sought out on their dates in the Underworld.

Forget-me-nots never came to mind because they had become a favourite of hers without her noticing. She loved them out of simple routine association, she only noticed them when they weren’t present.

Anakin seemed to have picked up on this without her saying anything about it.

He’d visit Padmé’s office or their apartment, and only when he left did she notice the vase on her desk had new flowers in it now, or that a tiny bouquet had been left on the counter or the coffee table.

In a way, Anakin was like those forget-me-nots. Just a simple yet not-so-simple fact of her life. Something Padmé simply couldn’t forget when he wasn’t around. If she hadn’t seen forget-me-nots for as long as she’d gone without seeing Anakin after their first meeting as children, she surely would have forgotten what the color blue looked like, just like how she had nearly forgotten just how beautiful a blue his eyes were.

Sure, the globular cluster of bright blue stars that drifted on by Padmé’s office window in the Coruscanti summer afternoons looked like a patch of forget-me-nots, but it wasn’t the same, it couldn’t compare. Just like how nothing and no one could ever compare to Anakin.

He was her forget-me-not.

And she his.

It was early winter on Coruscant when the Jedi Temple burned, and that meant that Padmé saw that same cluster rising through the smoke in the dim golden night, silhouetting the ancient building as it crumbled in a shimmering blue gleam.
