The notifications are flying in so fast I can't keep up. My MFL list has ballooned to the point that it’s no longer helpful, just bewildering! But the stories coming out at the end of this year are tantalizing, so here's a confectioner's dozen listed by length. A part 2, with stories still in progress, is guaranteed, and a part 3 is likely too. (Add your stories please!)

<1K words:

The Whosie Wotsit of the Atmospheric Pressure (272 words) by AlwaysJohn. Gently comes the season of love.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas and All Through the Flat ... (370 words) by hisfavouritejumper (helloliriels). … a voice could be heard, "Oh yes! Just like that!"

Inspirational (614 words) by NovaNara. After watching telly, John can't help himself. He has to ask.

1K–2.5K words:

News From Nowhere (1319 words) by mydogwatson. A meeting on a park bench changes two lives.

A Quiet Night In (1355 words) by saintscully. New Year’s Eve doesn’t go according to plan.

Epiphany in the A&E (1597 words) by Enterthetadpole. When Rosie ends up ill and has to go to the A&E, John finds out more than he realises about himself, and the detective he has chosen to share his home life.

2.5K–5K words:

It Will Fall (4195 words) by stopthat. They’ve slipped into a life that feels more right than any he’s lived before. When the apple is ripe, it will fall.

5K-10K words:

Flattened By Your Interest (6675 words) by J_Baillier. A Christmas story of male escorts, rotting corpses, drunken sisters and hopeless romance. What else would we expect from John Watson and Sherlock Holmes?

Miracle at Appledore (7898 words) by amaruuk. Sherlock was wrong about everything. There are no vaults. Magnussen has won. And John has a gun.

Meanwhile The World Goes On (8075 words) by Raina_at . It's just past midnight in December 25th, 2009. John is in the middle of a staring contest with the abyss when he meets a mysterious stranger who proves to him that life is far from done with John Watson.

10K–20K words:

Hide and Seek (2/6 ch., 6745 words so far) by thegildedbee. Four entrances and exits that move two London boys, neither with a fixed permanent address, ever closer to 221B Baker Street.

Three Christmases (17,369 words) by Calais_Reno. Summary:

What if John had received a clue that Sherlock wasn't dead? What if he had people who helped him through his grief? And what if Sherlock had a wish of his own?

Is it possible to preserve a moment in time?

Reprise: Variation 2 (4/? ch., 8 K so far) by elwinglyre. After the fall and funeral, John despairs, but also embraces a glimmer of hope—that Sherlock is alive. Sometimes wishes do come true. This AU follows John as he helps Sherlock dismantle Moriarty's network to save all that they love. In the process they may even save each other.

Bonus icing on the chocolates: if there's a happier surprise than learning that J_Baillier's Drift United (264,556 words so far) has upped its chapter count to 52, I can't think just now of what that might be.

 [...] In Ch. 4 [of my fic Both Sides Now], John unexpectedly announces that after the night they’ve spent TOGETHER together, he has to break up with Mary. Sherlock didn’t see that coming, didn’t dare to hope for it, and flings himself to his knees and embraces John around the waist (John’s sitting in a hotel armchair). They’ve both still got their dyed hair etc. and are wearing white hotel bathrobes.

FINALLY, at zero hour with 2 days to spare, here's pic three of three for my @fandomtrumpshate pieces for 2023! The AMAZING @totallysilvergirl gave me a selection of scenes I could try to draw from their BEAUTIFUL fanfic, Both Sides Now, Of course I chose the HARDEST one to draw because I SUCK at background elements, but I was determined to give them something that would do their story some justice, because it is VERY sweet (the other options probably would have been easier to draw, but this scene specifically made me melt) and I love it!

So yes, this is John and Sherlock, after spending a night together... they're undercover hence why their hairs are different colours, and in the story John has brown contacts as well, but I really wanted to MAKE this John, so decided he took them out LOL (I genuinely don't remember if Silver wrote that he took them out, but they didn't mind I made this creative choice).

As I mentioned, I have a hard time with scenery and such, so I lately try to do things a bit more complex for other people so I can get comfy with doing it. Silver seemed to really like the piece though, despite my reservations about it, so I'm happy that they're happy.

AND I am shocked I got this done on time... I was SO nitpicky with the colours on this one, so I am glad I got it done within deadline of December 31, LOL.

Title is from this beautiful line in the scene being depicted:

John’s moral compass isn’t blind, no, it’s as pragmatic as it is honourable, and Sherlock loves him more every minute, more than he knew he could love anyone, even John.

Everyone please go give Silver's fic Both Sides Now a read, it's really lovely and can be done in one sitting!! It's just a bit over 14K w. <3

AO3 SCAM

There's been a number of people reporting over on the AO3 subreddit that they're getting messages like this posted in the comments shortly after posting new fics.

The AO3 team are NEVER going to try and contact you about TOS violations via the comment section (or about anything else for that matter)

Don't click any links. Report the accounts involved (which might claim to be things like "LucySupport"), delete the message and move on.

Consulting Detective Sherlock Holmes is back in business. No, it wasn’t a wig before and no, he’s most decidedly not single.

The 32nd and final chapter tracks time from January to September — from the end of treatment to when a little over a year has passed from diagnosis.

This 24-page conclusion to the story took a week to finish, including eight hours for a final edit (and a bit of help and arse-kicking from @elldotsee). Just like the entire story, it was a harrowing, beautiful and monstrous process where I felt I had to put to task all the experience and skills I've gained writing my previous medical h&c fics. In a way, though I have loved constructing it, I am as happy as Sherlock and John to see this journey coming to an end — to be able to give them the happy end they deserve.

Ah, I get what you mean :) Our authors are people too, who have lives that keep them busy, AND they still provide us with amazing fics for free!! <3

I believe it is still open - new writers can/should add your work to it. It initially was for short works, but it's pretty open now. Thank you @totallysilvergirl for helping folks like Nonny here find new writers!

We all need to do what we need to do - it's important for us all to know/appreciate that we can't write forever and other things can take priority in time. And also so wonderful that there are so many new writers loving Sherlock & John (and the other fantastic characters of canon+) who keep bringing us new works.

Drawn to Stars sequel:

John and Sherlock work with Roberto Zanardi on a massive case in Italy, while Roberto's mother Elena keeps Rosie busy. Elena Zanardi didn't remember Sherlock kindly, but is warming to him for Rosie's sake. (In this series, dialogue in italics is (appropriately) in Italian.)

Watson comes back with her treasures: pinecones of the palest pale grey, pieces of flintrock almost the color of cinnabar, a few gorgeous feathers from an unlucky magpie. Sherlock, tormented by the horseflies, can barely muster the appropriate enthusiasm for her finds.

Impatient, Elena exclaims, “For pity’s sake, Sherlock. Use. The. Spray. Forgive me, but you’re more stubborn than my five sons put together.”

He can bear it no more and yields, spraying the vile product over every exposed centimetre of skin. The relief is immediate and intense.

“You have no idea. Ask John about that, he’s got a detailed list.”

Elena laughs, and Watson obligingly chimes in with “What is drama queen in Italian?”

Sherlock puts on the indignant stare that always makes Watson laugh. “No one’s called me that since—breakfast. It was supposed to be our secret.”

The giggling complicity of his daughter never fails to warm him. Her sense of humour is shifting from childlike to ironic, and that too is a leap of maturity he’s not certain he will like. He's loved being her omniscient Ba, and will have to learn to be her Ba with feet of clay, as have all other fathers before him.

Elena, curse the woman, only smiles and says, “Then it’s a secret you’re rubbish at keeping.” And Watson understands the sense, if not every word, and laughs again.
