You know why Jack was so determined to lock up this helpless, harmless, mostly-innocent teenage girl? Because someone had to suffer. Hobbs cheated the hangman by getting shot before he could be arrested, tried and sentenced, and the world needed to feel like it had had vengeance.

When serial killer Jerry Brudos was apprehended, he realized the evidence against him was conclusive, so he pleaded guilty and was sentenced right away. People felt obscurely cheated that they didn’t have the spectacle of a trial and the satisfaction of watching this monster fight for his freedom and/or life and be defeated. So a while after he was locked away, someone dreamed up the idea that his wife might have been his accomplice. It was ludicrous, but the world wanted to watch a trial and see lurid evidence, and that’s what it got.
