Jason is uncomfortable, but Guinevere’s on his knees, and Greta’s beside him explaining that, statistically, planes are extremely safe.

“Everything alright?” Charlotte asks from across the aisle.

“It’s too loud,” Jason replies, “and my knees keep hitting the seat in front of me.”

“I know.” Charlotte smiles. “Just imagine how happy Serena will be to see us.”

“I don’t think she likes surprises.”

“I’m sure she’ll like this one,” Charlotte says. “Mum wouldn’t have invited us otherwise.”

“That’s true … I just don’t understand why Elinor couldn’t come.”

Charlotte, who hadn’t bought Elinor’s flimsy excuse, just nods. “It’s her loss, Jason.”

“Maintenance should really do something about this lift,” Serena grumbles.

“They should … and maybe we should stop using a cargo lift nobody else ever uses.”

“Except for Dom …”

Bernie decides to distract Serena. “Tell me something about you I don’t know.”

“Alright.” Serena joins Bernie on the floor. “When I was at uni, I spent a year in Paris. To earn some money, I worked as a model for an artist.” Serena smirks at the surprised look on Bernie’s face. “I was very good at it.”

“Of course,” Bernie chuckles. “I have just one question: what happened to the painting?”

Bernie rubs her shorts above the scar from the gunshot wound. She can feel Serena’s eyes on her, knows she’s curious, and maybe it’s time to tell her.

Bernie clears her throat. “I was lucky … bullet went right through … didn’t hit the bone or the artery.” She sees Serena sitting up straight. “There was no doctor at the camp — that’s why they grabbed me —… and I only had the bare essentials in my pack …”

Serena gasps and reaches for Bernie’s hand. “Are you saying you had to treat the wound yourself?”

Bernie’s fingers tighten around Serena’s hand as she nods.

“You’re very quiet tonight,” Serena remarks softly after dinner.

Bernie looks up, startled out of her thoughts. “Sorry, did you say something?”

“I only said that you were very quiet tonight. Everything alright?”

Bernie nods absentmindedly. “Yes, yes … I just have a lot on my mind …”

“Anything I can do to help?”

“I’m not …” Bernie sighs. “I keep thinking about Cameron and what … how …”

“How he became someone who bombs a hospital?”

Bernie swallows hard. “Yeah.”

“I honestly don’t know.” Serena takes Bernie’s hand across the table. “Have you asked Tom if he could offer any insight?”

“Maybe I should …”

“You really don’t mind her flirting with Bernie?” Donna’s eyes are on the nurse who’s following Bernie around. “When does Bernie go back to the ED?”

Serena mock-gasps. “Are you hoping to deprive me of my wife’s presence?”

“Why would Donna do that?”

“Because …” Serena whirls around to face Bernie, “that nurse keeps flirting with you. Donna’s worried I’ll start throwing things.”

“Flirting?”

“Yes. Flirting.”

“But she can clearly see I’m married.” Bernie holds up her left hand, looking puzzled. “So what’s the point?”

Serena kisses her cheek. “Please never change, darling.”

Bernie shrugs. “I’m going to talk to her.”

Set after the series. Their first New Year’s Eve as a married couple … and Bernie still doesn’t like fireworks (kind of refers back to an older drabble, but only obliquely and you don’t have to read it to understand what’s going on here)

“To a peaceful night.”

They’re quiet for a while before Bernie speaks again. “Are you sure you’re alright with us being here,” she gestures around Wolfe Cottage, “and not at Fleur’s party?”

Serena takes her wife’s hand. “For the hundredth time, darling: I’m very alright with being here. In fact, I have a plan for midnight.”

“Oh?”

“Hmm. I’m going to take you upstairs in about an hour and then I’m going to ravish you, slowly and thoroughly. And if I time it right, you’ll be greeting the new year with … a different kind of firework going off.”

“Ouch!”

Waking up at Serena’s groan, Bernie reaches out to her. “Serena?”

“I think I pulled a muscle last night.”

“Doing what?”

Serena just looks at Bernie, one eyebrow raised meaningfully.

“Oohh,” Bernie drawls, grinning as she rolls herself on top of Serena to kiss her, before starting to work her way down towards already pebbling nipples.

“What’re you doing?”

Bernie pulls the duvet away to kiss her way to her destination. “We should help that muscle,” she mutters betwen licks, “by gently repeating the exercise.”

Serena moans, burying her hands in Bernie’s hair as her muscles turn to jelly.
