People who read fanfics but don't interact with it, here's a harsh reminder:
Comment.
Comment like the fanfic's life depends on it, because it likely does.
The author behind it is writing this for fun, writing this to share with others, for free. Don't bother saying "Oh, they write it for themselves." No, not really.
Art is meant to be shared and enjoyed and discussed.
Comments are motivation for an author to keep going. Comments tell an author someone is enjoying their work.
Comments mean more than kudos! Kudos can only be given once and could be given early when a fic is young. But if people are reading but not commenting on later chapters, an author has no idea if anyone is enjoying or even reading their recent updates! They might think people have lost interest! An author might give up if not given a reminder that at least someone is reading and loving it.
"But I don't know what to comment!"
Easy! You've got several different styles to try! Mix and match if you want.
The simplest and quickest: Thanking the author for the update or maybe even just a 💚.
Screaming: Caps and chaos, scream at the author all your thoughts. I assure you, authors love seeing this:
“NOOOOO 😭😭😭 WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME??? ajdkskfjskfj”
You can even go further and write line by line as you 'live react' to the chapter/fic:
“Okay the opening is already killing me.” “OH MY GOD THEY FINALLY KISSED!!!” “WHY WOULD YOU END IT THERE???”
Quote: Pick out a quote from your favourite part and make a comment around it. Was it a good line? Did you really like what happened?
My favourite line is "she had more money than sense sometimes, but she’d hardly cry over this." It's a small one but I love how it conveys his attitude towards her mixed with his desire.
Hype: Maybe you don't have much to say, but just announcing your love is enough!
"I'm obsessed with this fic." or “frantically mashing the kudos button again and again"
Speculate: Guess what might be coming next!
"i wonder why lilli would rather Elikar take her and Cinnara 👀 👀"
Analyse: Offer thoughtful commentary on themes, motivates, foreshadowing, or symbolism. An author would be thrilled to see all the little details they might have written are being picked up!
"Her mentioning the magic being different somehow seems to imply she's already dimly aware of the sea's connection to Apocrypha, maybe?"
Just remember one crucial rule: Don't offer criticism unless you know each other and you've been asked.
Now go! Go support some of your favourite fanfics and authors! Show the love, and don't hide it behind discord servers!
I used to be kinda neutral on the whole likes vs reblogs thing but recently it’s started to bother me more and I’m getting where you’re coming from. People are coming in my masterlist and liking fics literally down the line and then leave without a single reblog or a follow. I get its the nature of the platform but like they clearly like my stuff so would it kill them to leave a little support behind

Tumblr, as it's original concept, was intended as a platform designed for sharing. You had to go seek out people with your interests and follow them precisely because they shared things from creators. Why would you follow a blank blog, or someone that never shared anything?
Things have changed a bit, yeah. We have the 'for you' page full of terrible recommendations, you don't have to go hunting through tags anymore and can just have them on your dash recommending you things passively, but the original concept of a platform built on it's main function being that of sharing works/art/media is still there. If we all stopped reblogging, hell if we all stopped tagging things, we'd never find anything on here. We have to reblog.

a comment a day keeps the insanity at bay
I still sometimes get kudos and, very rarely, comments on my old fanfics on Ao3. Even though I'm not in that fandom anymore, I still really appreciate the kudos and comments. It still makes me smile. Remember, no matter how old a fic is, kudos and comments are an easy way to brighten a writer's day. It still brings joy to a writer's heart, I promise.

As a reader, do you prefer reading a prologue detailing the (in this case, tragic) backstory of the main characters OR would you prefer to get to know the characters and then be surprised about it along side the other characters?

One of the coolest parts about being a fan of fanfic is you can actually contact the author. And they will respond. And then you can message them nonstop until they allow you into their lives and then you’re becoming their beta reader and suddenly you know multiple authors of all types of fiction books and fanfic authors who will drag out their deleted fics for you to read at a moments notice.
Anyway. Comment on fics and message authors. It’s absolutely worth it.

after i made a post saying i wasnt going to treat myself like a machine to update fics i felt better about taking my time on updates until i kept seeing people constantly complain about other author’s updates not being frequent enough. how a fic that hasnt updated since november is "dead." or how they want an update so bad from an author who left the fandom and theyre so frustrated with them. and this is your reminder that authors owe you nothing. so stop complaining about this. you’re sending a message to every fic author who sees that message that we are worth nothing but what we create to you. a fic that hasn’t updated in a couple months or years isn’t dead until the author themself says it is. give fic authors some fucking grace & time and stop guilt tripping us. we do this for free.

If you can’t think of anything to say about a fic, writers also like to know:
- what time it is
- how long you’ve been reading
- how many chapters you’ve covered in the last 24 hours
- what you were late for because you were reading
- the woeful few hours you have left to sleep
- the emotional outbreaks you’re experiencing
- the inappropriate place you’re having said outbreak
- the general public’s reaction to your outbreak
- how much phone battery you have left

Okay.
I'm a fic author. I am not an author publishing a work to be sold for profit. I'm just banging out my little tunes (so to speak). I get NOTHING from putting these on a public forum like AO3. NOTHING. Nothing except potentially providing entertainment and enjoyment to other people.
But how am I to know that other people have been entertained and have enjoyed my work if they don't tell me?
Putting my fics on AO3 is basically Putting them on a roadside stand with a donation jar.
The AO3 donation jar is the comment section.
Now unless your comment is rude, unkind or demanding, I, The Author, am not going to be annoyed at getting a donation for ANYTHING. Why would I?
This would be like a published author saying "hey what the heck are you buying my book for? I wrote that eight years ago, what are you doing giving me money for that you weirdo"
Posting a live fic is a beautiful thing. When a fic ends or has been published for a while, its a sad thing. There's a window people used to wait at for that fic.
When you comment on an old fic, you give the author the opportunity to revisit that fic. It's comforting and gratifying to know that this story still holds appeal.
And even more so if its old because that means that you found this because you were looking for it, not just because it happened to be at the top of the results because it's brand new.
TLDR
Comment on any fic that speaks to you. Any fic, of any genre, for any fandom, at any time.

We all know how fanfic authors receive so little love for the amazing works they gift us to enjoy after our tired days or during lazy weekends. We all know there’s lots of post telling us on how to leave a good comment. We all know, too, that sometimes it slips our mind to do so.
That’s what Review Saturday is for! You read a fic this week and were feeling a bit shy? Or you barely finished before lunch hour ended and didn’t have time for a comment? Or were binge reading and a bit (a lot) lazy so didn’t want to leave a comment on each one? Then do it this Saturday! Go to that fic, read it again, get your energy up from the feels and leave a comment!
Reviewing can sometimes be scary, I know. How do I even talk to that god/goddess at the other side of the screen? But it’s not so bad! I promise you, that author will be thrilled to hear from you! Hey! They may even start a conversation with you! How good is that? (Really good, I assure you. @ladynorbert and I had lots of fun talking after my reviews on her DA fic.)
