It is easy to forget just how central military violence has been and remains to business as usual. More than 5 per cent of annual CO2 emissions stem from the militaries around the world. We often talk about flying and how bad it is for the climate, and it is bad, but civil aviation accounts for about 3 per cent of the total. And the 5 per cent that comes from militaries precede actual war: these are peacetime emissions, made in the process of maintaining the logistical apparatuses and fighting capacities of armies before they go to war. When they do go into battle, the fuel is set on fire and the bombs rain down in bursts of concentrated additional emissions. The US, of course, is at the centre of all this. The emissions from the occupation army during the war on Gaza might be counted as just another category of American emissions. The US outweighs every other country; indeed, as Neta C. Crawford notes, 'the US military is the single largest institutional fossil fuel user in the world and thus the world's single largest greenhouse gas emitter In her book The Pentagon, Climate Change, and War, she brilliantly charts the development of what she calls 'the deep cycle' The militaries of first the UK and then the US found coal, followed by oil, to be indispensable for waging war: for manufacturing weapons, transporting soldiers into the battlefield, providing mobility once engaged, bringing firepower to bear on the enemy. By basing its operations on fossil fuels, the US military contributed to their spread throughout the economy; and when both the military and economy were thoroughly dependent on them, the protection of this essential commodity itself became an imperative of war. No part of the world has been so deeply formed and scarred by this cycle as the Middle East. Although Palestine is at its centre, the devastation clearly extends to other countries too: think only of Iraq and Yemen.

Two World Cup finalists from opposing teams in this fucking picture, this sport isn't real
Context for anyone who is wondering: Lamine Yamal's parents won an UNICEF raffle for a charity photoshoot in which Barça players posed with kids, and 5 month old Lamine happened to get 20yo Messi. Which is like. Literally insane

Some disjointed thoughts re: something I just reblogged where some of the comments seem to be pitting cozy fantasy against grimdark and while cozy definitely has its fair share of criticisms, I am always deeply suspect of people who champion “grimdark” as anything approaching superior as if both of these genres don’t have a plethora of examples of pandering in similar ways albeit in different directions
Gritty, violent, gore is just as weak a replacement for actual plot as comfy, cozy, sanitized fiction is
They are both aesthetics — empty until they are given some actual substance

i had been crying about this on discord for a little while bc it's so wild, but. here is a Veilguard Development Lore :')
"maybe being the lead writer of a fairly dark fantasy game is not the ideal role for someone who gets stressed out by conflict in fiction"
yeah I can't stop thinking about this either, ever since I first read it. There's so much going on. I read the first chapter of this book, and the tension that was so unbearable in it was "main character's uncle dies and main character's father talks about maybe keeping the inheritance from her" - that's the stressful plot point that couldn't be handled.
I had some people upset with me years ago about suggesting (and grimly sticking to my gut) that maybe the writers of the video game had something to do with the deeply different writing tone and scope and depth of the video game (experienced subjectively by many people). none of the many interviews since then with the head writer talking about comfort in fiction have proven me wrong at all. I cannot imagine the situation where they would willingly add a distressing conflict where it wasn't already there, or fight to include a darker tone. They said "we're going to proudly do this our way and it's not going to be the same as if Gaider was there to lead" and called it a day. And I think they genuinely still don't understand what happened because the tone genuinely pleased them.
very random examples of ryder being the funniest person in the andromeda galaxy for MEA appreciation week :)
Why do gay men have to be so fucking terrible about vaginas? I get it. You don't like them. They're not for you. But you don't have to insult a person's body because they have one and you're not attracted to them. Be a fucking adult jfc.
When people argue that food from Chinese and Mexican restaurants in the US are not 'real' representations of that culture's cuisine ignore the historical reality that these dishes were developed by diasporic communities striving to recreate the flavors of home with available resources. Such criticism frames adaptation as a loss of authenticity, rather than recognizing it as a sincere and evolving expression of culture by people separated from their homeland.
Too good to leave in the tags

flaccid penis... it's chic, it's hip, it's the next big thing

more people need to start making OCs because I just saw a post of a woman who named her real life human baby O'lyrix and I think that child's life could've been saved if mommy had just gotten all her quirky naming conventions out on a fantasy character instead of inflicting it on someone who's gonna have to submit a job application someday
