Special day.
Today it was a magical day at the English academy. Being a teacher involves many responsibilities and our aim is to know how to reach to students.
When you start being an English teacher, you realize all the things you would like to teach. Teachers need to teach the basic things such as vocabulary and verbs, but you have to approach it in a unique and different way. We must add the perfect dose of creativity and excitement to help students remember and to increase their culture.
I always thought that when I had the opportunity to teach English, I will teach things I really wish I was taught. Most teachers are subjective and we use our tastes to instill it to our students. Although we must find a way to let students become curious by their own.
I always thought that when I had a group of students I was going to “spoil” them with old movies, with songs form the 70s and 80s, with scenes from past history. The reason is that “not because it is old, it needs to be forgotten”.
On January 24, I tried it. I was really nervous and wasn't sure if it would work out. We had reviewed several easy verbs such as “singing and dancing” and I had taught “the weather” vocabulary. Without thinking it twice, I planned a video session to finish the lesson. I put about 4 minutes of a classic song called “Singing in the rain”. One of my favorite films, one of those which I cannot stop watching, singing and dancing to the tune of Gene Kellly.
I knew my students would be my “little experiment”, I feared they would not like it because they live in a different era with an advanced technology. That’s why the film was not eligible for their time.
I do not know how it all happened. I do not know if my students perceived the nerves on my eyes or my desire to teach them something I love, because suddenly, life brought me the most magical five minutes of my little teaching experience. I could not only see on my student’s faces the excitement watching Gene Kelly dancing, jumping and singing; but I also noticed the interest they had when they approached the computer leaving 2 inches apart. I did not mean to show them something that I loved. I wanted to show them that with six years old, they had already understand parts of the songs. I wanted to show them that they could be happy even if they have a bad day. I wanter to show them that you can sing and dance even if you are an adult. I wanted to pass on the happiness that Gene Kelly transmits in that scene. And it really worked it. At the end of the video, students kept dancing and remembering part of the song. It was a magical and emotional moment.
The smiles of those 14 small boys and girls restored my hope and it certified that we can certainly help to make them happy with small things that had been forgotten. I still do not know if they will ever remember this January 24, but I will remember it. Thanks to them I will continue fighting for being a dreamy teacher that helps to make students happy while they are learning old things.
Un dĂa especial...
Miss Poppin’s Classroom:
HabĂamos repasado varios verbos fáciles de recordar como “singing and dancing” y hoy tocaba enseñar “the weather”.
