Shane and Ilya arranging for Rose and Sveta to come meet Shane's folks one day. Perhaps at the cottage. Shane and Ilya have to pop out for a while to pick up Sveta from the airport.
And when they do, Rose corners the Hollanders and says:
'I'm so glad I have this opportunity to speak to you guys because, God, somebody has got to...'
And proceeds to read them to absolute filth about how they've been failing Shane.
Ie. why is his mother managing Shane when he should've had an experienced pro from the get go. Now he's stuck with a manager he can't fire for fucking up without causing family problems. He can't ever have private family time without his manager being there. He cannot ever do private work stuff without his mother being there. No you cannot take Ilya's assessment of your parenting as proof of quality he grew up in Hell. Never mind what you've done to make Shane successful what have you done to make him happy. Yes Rose knows what she's talking about she's grown up surrounded by other peoples' pushy 'stage moms' who fixate on being a great manager until they completely fail at being mothers. Why is a 26 year old man feeling like he has to eat food and wear clothes his mother orders. Why did he have to lie about where he was this summer just to get some alone time. Why are you entering his house uninvited and without permission does he have to change his locks just to get some fucking privacy. If you're so great why didn't he want to come out to you. If you suspected he was gay for years then literally what the fuck have you been doing just leaving him to suffer in silence. David being 'chill' is nice but if you slipped into a coma tomorrow would Shane's life meaningfully change in any way. Have you ever even googled autism. Your response to your son coming out was to give him a panic attack, about which you both did nothing, have you even apologised. You have known for years that your son suffers from anxiety attacks has anyone ever even floated the idea of him getting medication or a service animal is it only the special son in law who gets mental healthcare or??
And then as David and Yuna are reeling from this onslaught, they suddenly hear the sound of the boys coming back, calling 'hey we're here!' and Rose says 'good talk! act natural!'
And in the boys come with Sveta and they all settle down for dinner.
Hours later, dinner over, dark has fallen, things have settled down.
Rose has disappeared while the boys show her to her room and make sure she's set for the night.
And Sveta sits down alone with the Hollanders and says:
'I am so glad I have this chance to talk to you because somebody has to…'
And proceeds to give them her very black opinions about how they've raised their interracial son without any sense of pride in his Japanese heritage.
IE. To speak French but not his mother tongue. Doesn't have a single asian or wasian friend (and from what she can discover never has). Has the kind of total erasure of any cultural references in his homes that suggests an undercover spy deliberately covering up their past like it's a dirty secret. No Japanese food, no art no music no movies no clothes no decoration, no sponsorships. And you're shocked he was able to hide being gay for a decade. You've made him feel he must somehow (impossibly) represent a whole group of people you haven't given him any connection to. No community to support him. He may as well have been adopted by white people. Do you see how unfair it is to stick him up on a pedestal all alone just because he's not white but then also expect him to be somehow better at whiteness than the actually white players. And he's supposed to just shut up about this and never think about it and certainly never speak of it to the press, or even to himself? This is not actually the aspirational example you think it is. Sveta's mother made damn sure she had a whole black Russian friend group as a kid to make her feel welcome and equally connected to both sides of her family, gave her black toys, media, music, etc. as well as and not instead of just the white stuff etc etc.
(The boys come back from helping Rose and are like 'Oh, hey, are you guys leaving??')
