listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious

also the creator's own artistic vision! Jorge commissioning major animators/artists in the fanbase to do promotional materials for Epic and actually directing the art with references and character designs! I particularly love the thing he did with the gods' designs where each of them has their own unique highlight colour:

is it "historically accurate Greek clothing"? not in the slightest. am I going to treat this more seriously than whatever this slop is?

absolutely. because, like, Epic does not present itself as something historical, Jorge himself has dedicated several videos to the differences between the original Odyssey and Epic (and asking the fans to actually read the source material if they need to study it for school/uni, not just listen to Epic :D). he actually presented Epic as a very anime- and videogame-esque adaptation made for fun. meanwhile I feel like Nolan's movie has expectations for us to believe it's historical as heck, that they wore some tin Rings of Power grade armor and Helene could have been black and whatnot, while putting much less passion and care into it. would I accept gods in superhero suits if the creator thought it was a cool thematic design feature? absolutely. will I accept tin armor and the narratively crucial scenes cut because it was mOrE hIsToRiCaL?? not even if you paid me to. rant session done thank you gentlemen
