Originally from Scotland, Dorian was raised by his grandparents. Despite his grandparent's best efforts, his mom had always been a bad seed. When she fell pregnant, already in her forties, she was pretty stuck in her ways. She considered having an abortion but ultimately decided to keep the baby, especially with the encouragement of her parents. Maybe they thought if she became a mom it would change her for the better, but being a parent was never really in her cards and she often left Dorian in their care. His stays became more frequent and long lasting until she stopped picking him up all together. It was better this way, she thought, as she knew they could take care of him far better than she ever could. Dorian liked spending time with his grandparents. It was the only life he knew. He didn't realize other kids were being raised by people much younger than them. They were already well into their sixties when he was born and by the time he was in elementary school, they were in their seventies. Dorian would help his grandma in the kitchen and in the garden, as she was a retired teacher. He would spend summers hanging out a the small museum his grandfather worked in. His grandpa was a security guard there and had been one for decades. While other kids were running amuck down the halls of the museum, he was happy to just be allowed to wander around as he pleased, taking in all the history of the place. When he was 10 years old, his grandfather was pushed into retirement. He wasn't able to stop a group of teenage boys from defacing a painting, as by the time he made it to them the damage had already been done. This wasn't the first incident that he had failed to stop, but it was the one that lead to his retirement. Dorian was angry about it. His grandfather had loved that job. In a fit of rage, he went after one of the teenagers and pushed him to the ground. He wanted to beat him up for making his grandpa lose his job, but he resisted the urge. It wasn't worth it. His grandparents would have been disappointed that he chose violence. For the next several years his grandparents enjoyed their retirement. But as time went on it was apparent that he was taking care of them more than they were taking care of him. This especially was true after his grandmother had a stroke. He juggled school, work, and helping his grandpa take care of his grandma. His life was basically school, work, and taking care of his grandparents. If it were up to him, he would have continued life this way. But his grandparents didn't want that for him. They encouraged him to put them into a retirement home and continue on with his education. He did it because that's what they wanted, but he still visited them every day. The house was too lonely without them. Dorian sometimes think that his grandparents just waited long enough to see him graduate before they left the world. Within a year of graduating, both of his grandparents passed away. It was a hard year to say the least, especially as he was trying to take on a teaching position. He substituted for a bit, eventually finding an alright position at a school. He liked teaching, in fact he loved it, but he hated coming home. Every corner of the house reminded him of his grandparents. It was hard when they were still alive, but now he couldn't even call them. To her credit, his mom actually tried for a bit. She had thrown a few birthday cards in his direction when he was younger. But never went to any of his birthday parties. His mom did surprisingly attend his graduation ceremony. And she made sure that she went to her parents funerals. But it was hard for her to really be the person he needed at the time. They were practically strangers. It was somewhat healing, though, and he appreciated the effort even if they soon grew distant.
Dorian managed to distract himself with love for a couple of years. He had actually met the guy a few years before, as he worked where his grandparents lived, but after their passing he sort of became a shoulder to lean on. That friendship turned into something more and for the first time, Dorian could see a bright future again. He even thought he was going to marry the guy. Things turned sour, however, when he noticed that he seemed to have a pretty hefty spending habit. It didn't seem to match his salary and he was always vague when Dorian questioned it. He felt bad at first, but if he was going to be spending the rest of his life with the guy he deserved to know what kind of money problems they would be getting into. After months of digging and prodding, he finally got his answer and it wasn't a good one. He didn't even find out through his own investigation. It all just came up to the surface. His boyfriend was fired from his job due to mismanagement of money from residents at the retirement home. Dorian was disgusted and heartbroken. Part of him still loved the man he thought his boyfriend was, but he couldn't bring himself to continue the relationship. He no longer trusted him and he promptly dumped him and ended any fantasies of one day marrying him. After his breakup, he decided that he needed to leave. He started looking for other positions, further away from his hometown, and that lead him to seeking opportunities in the US. He had never been able to travel when he was younger. He met all the qualifications for the exchange program and it was a perfect excuse to leave everything behind. So he did. He sold his grandparents house, left some belongings with his mom, and left Scotland for the states. It's been two and a half years since he moved to California. It's been a major culture shock. Middle school students are monsters. No one knows how to say his last name. They constantly ask him to say "Fiona" and "Donkey". But overall he has enjoyed himself. But his program is ending in six months and he really wants an extension. He's not ready to say goodbye to the life he's built in Aurora Bay.
