gideon was born the first of three children to his mother, jasmine green (a school teacher) and his father, solomon green (a construction worker). he has two younger sisters.
gideon grew up in a loving and boisterous home, loud and happy and protective. he was constantly surrounded by aunts and uncles and cousins always coming together for family meals, holidays, and junior high basketball games.
he lost his mother, his truest confidant and north star, when he was fourteen years old. the grief rocked his family and left a inescapable hole in all of their lives. his father withrew into drinking, and gideon followed his lead and did the same.
his ensuing depression pulled him away from everything that tied to his life before he lost his mother. church, his grades, his sisters and the basketball team to which he had once been dedicated.
gideon fell into a bad crowd -- people who could gain him easy access to the things that numbed his pain. he wasn't often an active participant in any crimes, but he didn't make any effort to stop them. a couple weeks shy of his eighteenth birthday, gideon was involved in an armed robbery at a strip mall and was arrested. he was viewed as an adult by the court and sentenced to ten years in prison.
he worked kitchen detail in the prison and found that he really loved it. it grounded him and he began to have dreams of having his own restaurant someday.
after his release he had a brief relapse into the bad habits that had lost him nearly half of his life. it was a wake up call and he righted himself. his sisters worked to get him in a sober house and he dedicated himself to the program.
on the way home from receiving his one year chip, gideon made a stop into a grocery store for a soda and a snack. on a whim, he bought a scratch off ticket. he had just become 20 million dollars richer.
gideon decided that he never wanted to live through another minnesota winter. with his winnings he purchased a beachfront house in aurora bay -- nothing gawdy, but comfortable. he then bought the all nighter diner from the retiring former own and made it his own.
