People love to depict Ei as a malicious mother which is a slanderous misreading of her character. She’s a negligent mother on account of it never occurred to her (a person wracked with grief and prone to incredibly narrow focus) that the puppet she created and accidentally gave emotions to is her sun. Ei sees herself as a craftswoman and, generally, when you craft a sword or a puppet, it doesn’t come to life and expect your love and care. In fact, I think it’s a little absurd to blame her for not reacting to this constructively. I too would freak out if after assembling a figure, it sprung to life and demanded I love it. Spontaneous Pinocchio is a n unprecedented and existentially terrifying prospect.
