Tin foil hat time, but I do wonder if the diminishing of Peter's force of personality and charisma in the more modern day runs of Spider-Man is to appeal to men who view themselves as that "every-man" stereotype. As men who are not just average, but who view themselves as "losers" who cannot find a partner, not for superhuman reasons (which is generally the reason Peter's relationships have problems, romantic or otherwise) but for mundane ones. And then those men who feel that way, who want to see themselves in Spider-Man in that particular way, become the people who write Spider-Man, and as such turn him into a self insert for their inability to date, because they were "too awkward" "too shy" "too *whatever*" to have a long term relationship. And as such wanted to feel better about themselves and projected it onto a character whose relationship problems almost entirely stem from him being a vigilante and his need to feel into control and protect those he cares about as a result of being a vigilante.
