I have been a big James Blake fan for a little while now, I think his voice is very smooth and tidy in presentation and his production style is very recognisable the best way I can describe it is - dubstep fused with high end art, safe but in the realm of pushing the envelope. The Colour In Anything was released, and it was good. But it didnât quite have the bite the debut and follow up had. And now we are here, Assume Form. On Assume Form James Blake has ventured further into a safety zone and more so away from the reason I originally took to his music. Now I tell a lie, James Blake released an EP called Enough Thunder in 2011. And it was interesting in production, but it had a cover on it - A Case Of You originally done by Joni Mitchell, most notably covered by Prince. And here comes this relatively undiscovered by the masses guy who not only covered such an outstanding song, he actually made it better. It was a very moving take, fused with a messy but almost unconditional love intertwined with it. That voice of his made love seem like a fragile concept, something one should not indulge within too much at the risk of breaking it. On his albums James Blake has touched on love, but as song titles suggest âLimit to your Loveâ there was always a negative undertone to it, a query or a doubt. Assume Form is filled with a different take on love, a tale where love has consumed his world in a thick red cloud. Donât be too fooled, Blakeâs music still sounds like that of a cold winters day. But there is a strong warmth to it also, a burning light that you desire in that cold exterior Blake gives us. James Blake seems to have landed on his feet and is managing to articulate a strong love and infatuation in a way that isnât gross or sickly but is simply a state of being. This album is stacked with notable features, my favourite being AndrĂŠ 3000. To say he hasnât released that heavily anticipated studio album we may or may not ever get, the man is certainly in the realm of top rappers today. The most notable track here is Canât Believe the Way We Flow, itâs a very impressive whirlpool of a track that really showcases Blake is not only a singer but an excellent producer. Another personal favourite for me is I'll Come Too, the sentiment is just so sweet and the melody is equally as infectious. The sentiment here seems to be capturing the simple feeling of how youâre willing to throw a lot of rules out of the window, simply because you love a person and you want to be with them, why? Because you love them. The following track Power On has some of my favourite lyrics on the entire album depicting the idea that love can help throw out pre-existing notions of what is actually important in your life, itâs a simple concept but the execution and display here is rather beautiful here are the lyrics â âI thought sex was at my pace, but I was wrong I thought it mattered more I'd say, but I was wrong I thought you were second place to every song I thought you'd overstayed your welcome I was wrong, power on, power onâ

Assume Form is intertwined and stiched together with glimmering piano, beautiful vocals and fantastic production. To say we have only just started 2019 I can definitely see this being within contention for album of the year.
