Watch Out For The Horse Behind You by Sydney trio LisatheΒ is a spacious, cinematic blend of ambient jazz and post-rock that uses layered improvisation to evoke evocative landscapes and deep personal narratives.
We Lost the Sea - Departure Songs (2015)
One of the more beloved albums and bands of the modern post rock scene, it was recorded after their vocalist Chris Torpy passed away in 2013, leaving the band to continue to this day as an instrumental band.
The album uses dramatic, slow, heavy instrumentation to tell stories of noble sacrifice, with each track representing individual accounts throughout history. This is further illustrated in a literal sense by the gorgeous artwork (done by guitarist Matt Harvey) found throughout the packaging, including a booklet with additional artwork and a brief retelling of each of these stories. This album was my introduction to the band, as well as two record labels; Bird's Robe records, based in Sydney, and Dunk!Records, from Belgium, who pressed the vinyl releases such as this beautiful green-with-pulsar-stripe edition from 2021. Dunk have since been a favourite label of mine, with their creative colourways gaining prominence in my record collection over the past few years.
PURR
"Purr" still glows with the energy of its predecessor β "Solar Waves" β and expands on that energy.
Both the music and the vocals for "Purr", a beaming progressive electronic rock song, have been written and recorded in late 2006. Despite being written in the very midst of a deep depressive chapter, it was conceived as a beacon of hope, a "place once to be reached". At the time of its creation, that distant place seemed virtually impossible, unthinkable, completely out of reach.
And yet, it had to be written. After the ravages of the first half of the "Overcome" album, there had to be an oasis of hope somewhere.
