A soft rain had fallen over the harbor all afternoon.
Tyler stood near the water, hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket, watching the lights reflect across the bay. Japan wasn't anything like California.
Everything felt different here. The language, the food, the people. He'd only been there for a few weeks, but somehow it already felt like a place he'd never forget.
Maybe that was because of you.
The first time he'd seen you had been completely by accident. He'd gotten lost trying to find his way through a crowded market and had somehow ended up asking the prettiest girl he'd ever seen for directions.
Instead of laughing at him, you'd smiled.
Then spent the next hour showing him around.
That had been months ago.
Now he couldn't imagine his days without you.
You'd taken him to hidden cafés, quiet beaches, and tiny shops he never would have found on his own.
You'd laughed at his terrible attempts to learn Japanese. He'd taught you American slang that made absolutely no sense.
And somewhere along the way, friendship had become something much more dangerous.
Something neither of you had meant to happen.
Something neither of you could stop.
Tyler looked over as you approached, your dark hair blowing gently in the wind.
The moment your eyes met his, he smiled.
The same smile that always seemed reserved just for you.
You tried smiling back.
Tried.
But it didn't quite reach your eyes.
Immediately, his expression changed.
"Hey."
You stopped beside him.
"Hey."
Something was wrong.
Tyler could feel it.
The two of you stood there in silence for a moment, listening to the waves lap against the shore.
Finally, he turned toward you.
"What's going on?"
You looked away.
And suddenly Tyler's stomach dropped.
Because he knew.
Not exactly what.
But enough.
Enough to know he wasn't going to like it.
"Y/N."
The concern in his voice nearly broke your heart.
You stared out at the water.
Anywhere except him.
Because the second you looked at him, you knew you were going to cry.
And once you started crying, you weren't sure you'd be able to stop.
"My family..." you began quietly.
Tyler waited.
"They've arranged my marriage."
The words seemed to disappear into the wind.
For a moment, neither of you moved.
Neither of you breathed.
Tyler simply stared.
Like maybe he'd heard you wrong.
Like maybe if he waited long enough, you'd laugh and tell him it was a joke.
But you didn't.
Because it wasn't.
His chest felt hollow.
"What?"
You squeezed your eyes shut.
"It's been planned for years."
The silence that followed felt unbearable.
Tyler looked away toward the harbor, running a hand through his hair.
"No."
Your heart shattered.
"Tyler—"
"No."
His voice cracked.
And suddenly that hurt worse than anything.
Because Tyler wasn't angry.
He was heartbroken.
The kind of heartbreak that left a person speechless.
The kind that left them staring at the ground because looking at you hurt too much.
"We were supposed to have more time."
The words came out barely above a whisper.
Tears burned behind your eyes.
"I know."
"I love you."
That did it.
The tears finally spilled over.
Tyler looked at you then.
Really looked at you.
And the sight of you crying nearly destroyed him.
Because he knew.
He knew you loved him too.
That was the cruelest part.
Neither of you wanted this.
Neither of you wanted to say goodbye.
You stepped closer.
Close enough to take his hand.
Close enough to memorize every detail of him.
His eyes.
His smile.
The way his hair always fell into his face.
Everything.
"I wish things were different."
Tyler laughed bitterly.
"So do I."
The rain had started again.
Neither of you noticed.
Or cared.
You reached up and touched his cheek gently.
"I'll always love you."
Tyler closed his eyes.
The words hurt.
Because he believed them.
Because he knew he would spend the rest of his life wondering what could have happened if things had been different.
If he'd met you sooner.
If he'd stayed longer.
If the world had been kinder.
"I wanted forever."
His voice cracked again.
You nodded.
"So did I."
For a long moment, neither of you spoke.
The city lights shimmered across the water.
The rain continued to fall.
And eventually, Tyler pulled you into his arms.
Holding you as tightly as he could.
As if somehow refusing to let go would stop time itself.
But time kept moving.
It always did.
And when he finally left Japan months later, he carried only a few souvenirs home.
A handful of photographs.
A faded letter.
And a heart that never quite belonged entirely to him again.
Because part of it would always remain across the ocean.
With the girl he loved.
The girl who had wanted forever just as much as he did

°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・
The Taylor house was unusually crowded that evening.
Michael had invited a bunch of his friends over, and somehow almost everyone had brought a date. The kitchen was filled with laughter, music, and the constant sound of people talking over each other.
Empty soda cans sat scattered across the table alongside bowls of chips, popcorn, and whatever snacks Michael's mom had left out before heading upstairs.
A radio on the counter played softly in the background, though it was nearly impossible to hear over the noise.
You sat beside Tyler, squeezed between him and one of Michael's friends who had spent the last ten minutes insisting he wasn't cheating at cards.
He was absolutely cheating.
Tyler had an arm draped comfortably across the back of your chair, occasionally letting his hand rest on your shoulder whenever he leaned closer to look at the game.
The gesture was casual enough that nobody really paid attention to it anymore. Tyler was always touching you somehow. A hand on your shoulder. An arm around your waist. A playful nudge whenever you laughed.
It wasn't possessive exactly, but there was something comforting about the way he always seemed to keep you close.
"You just made that rule up," one of the girls accused from across the table.
"I did not."
"You absolutely did."
"Prove it."
Tyler laughed and shook his head.
"He's cheating."
"Thank you!" three people said at once.
The room erupted into another round of arguments while you laughed beside him. Tyler looked over immediately at the sound.
"There it is."
"What?"
"That laugh."
You rolled your eyes.
Tyler grinned.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Comfortable.
The kind of evening you wished could last forever.
Then the kitchen door suddenly burst open.
Everyone jumped.
Elliott stood in the doorway, completely out of breath.
His eyes were wide.
His face was pale.
And he looked genuinely terrified.
"Michael!"
The entire table turned.
Michael immediately groaned.
"Oh, not again."
"I'm serious!"
Nobody looked convinced.
Elliott hurried into the kitchen, looking around at everyone as if he couldn't believe they were all just sitting there playing games.
"There was something outside."
A few people exchanged amused looks.
"What kind of something?" someone asked.
"I don't know!"
"Helpful."
"I'm serious!" Elliott insisted. "There was something in the shed!"
Michael rubbed his face dramatically.
"Elliott, go away."
"No!"
"Go away."
"No!"
Tyler was already trying not to laugh.
The poor kid looked completely panicked while everyone else looked increasingly amused.
Eventually Elliott became so determined that curiosity finally won out.
"Fine," Michael said, standing up. "Let's go look."
The rest of the group immediately followed.
Mostly because they wanted to see if Elliott was right.
But also because there wasn't much else to do.
The entire crowd spilled out into the backyard. Flashlights appeared. People searched around the shed. They checked behind trees, around bushes, and even along the fence line.
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
The backyard was quiet except for crickets and the occasional distant sound of traffic.
Elliott looked increasingly frustrated as every minute passed.
"I'm telling you, it was here."
"Sure it was."
"It was!"
"Maybe it was a raccoon."
"It wasn't a raccoon."
"Maybe it was Bigfoot."
That earned a round of laughter.
Elliott looked horrified.
"I'm serious!"
Tyler couldn't help it anymore.
He laughed.
Not meanly.
Just the kind of laugh that happened when something sounded completely impossible.
"Sorry, Elliott."
"It was real!"
"Okay."
"You don't believe me."
Tyler exchanged a glance with you.
"No."
Elliott threw his hands into the air.
The search continued for another few minutes before everyone eventually gave up.
No alien.
No monster.
No mysterious creature.
Nothing.
One by one they all headed back toward the house, teasing Elliott the entire way.
"Maybe next time it'll be a spaceship."
"Maybe it was Elvis."
"Maybe it was an alien."
The backyard exploded with laughter.
Elliott looked like he wanted to scream.
Nobody had believed him.
Not a single person.
Back inside, the warmth and noise of the kitchen immediately returned. People reclaimed their seats around the table, grabbed handfuls of chips, and restarted the card game as though nothing had happened.
Tyler dropped back into his chair beside you and immediately rested his arm across your shoulders again.
"You know," he said, reaching for a handful of chips, "if there really was an alien out there, that'd be kinda cool."
You laughed.
"Five minutes ago you were making fun of him."
"That's because there wasn't one."
"You don't know that."
Tyler opened his mouth to argue.
Then paused.
"Okay, fair point."
His grin widened.
You shook your head, smiling.
Across the room, Elliott sat quietly, still frustrated that nobody had listened to him.
Meanwhile, everyone else returned to their games, their snacks, and their conversations.
Completely unaware that somewhere outside, hidden in the darkness beyond the trees, Elliott had actually been telling the truth all along.
