IF THERE WAS ONE PERSON WHO COULD STAVE OFF THE SHARP EDGE OF MEMORY and let him set down the weight upon his shoulders, it was kaden. being with him was like remembering what it was like to breathe before guilt had alighted upon his chest with talons at his throat. if there was anything to be grateful for in the aftermath of that night, it was certainly this. this morning, he’s thinking about the note lily left, about the trek he’ll have to make later tonight to maroon peak. combined with his lack of sleep lately, it’s nearly enough to distract him from the fact that today is his birthday. but the knock on the door dissipates his worries, brings him back to the present. it’s instantaneous, the way his eyes light up, smile forming easily. grateful, that despite everything, at least they still had this. he spies kaden through the peephole and swings the door open. laughter escapes, eyes crinkling at the corners as he spies the cake with his favorite flavor, kaden’s handwriting on the sticky note.
“thank you,” he says with sincerity, but truthfully he thinks that there’s not enough words to communicate the magnitude with which he means it, beyond just keeping this tradition of theirs alive. if to be known is to be loved, he certainly thinks that in this moment he can feel the full meaning of the statement. a glance down at his watch affirms the accuracy of kaden’s statement. “minute and thirty-six seconds now,” he jokes in return, swinging the door wider to invite him in. leads them to the small dining table in the corner. he rubs his eyes once, looks at the cake again, then back to kaden. “thank you,” he repeats, as if kaden could’ve possibly missed it the first time. he wants to preserve the normalcy of it all, but he knows that today may be anything but, and more honesty spills forth. “i think with everything going on, i almost forgot what today was.”
"you already said that," he teases, a sparkle in his eyes as he places down the homemade delight on the table, a brush of whipped cream on the cuff of his overshirt clumsily placed. gaze redirected to catch the tail end of the words that were leaving xingyu's lips. there was a time where even a thought passing would have sent him into a tailspin, in the depths of his overthinking, cowering away from reality or worse... his fears... but now, he tries to shift away from the worries that might have been tormenting them all. he needs to know that his best friend has a memory of this day that isn't painted with everything that might be to come. "it's a good thing that i couldn't forget, then. someone has to remember when to celebrate," with sincerity.
there was no question that maybe in another time, another place, it would have been obvious that his hear was beating stronger in his chest every second that they spent together... but that place wasn't here, he told himself... it wasn't now. so, instead he thumbs the whipped cream off of his sleeve, the same small smile on his lips as he raises one hand, "are you going to get us a knife or are we just standing here admiring my gorgeous work?"
the brunette shakes her head at her friend's comment, a short laugh following. "you have a point," she responds, falling into step behind him. it's an easy routine, one they've settled into since second semester last year. lettie looks forward to these little breaks and the levity that usually comes with lucky's company. as the door closes behind them, she sinks into her usual spot, a stool that looks as if it probably spent some of its life in the science lab. "really? i thought ms. crowe would be here until the state finally decides to shut us down," she half-jokes. once kaden has passed her the cup, she takes a sip before letting out a pleased sigh. "so," she continues, shifting in her seat, "another sleepless night?" there's a hint of concern in her voice, in the way her brows furrow.
"all good things must come to an end," a questionable summary of their colleagues influence over the workplace but fitting. it would have been more positive if there was a hope that all bad things came to an end too but lately, he wasn't too sure. it was strange, not wanting to complain because he was aware that really, he didn't have the burden of all the powers and difficulties that came with them and yet, here he was crippled with all the things he had done that were far beyond his control; prisoner to his own anxiety. "lately that's all there seems to be..." he pauses, the flick of his tongue upwards to the roof of his mouth, wondering if he really deserved to complain when the hand she was dealt must be so much worse. he spent more time thinking about how things might be fair than he did about the realities of his own situation at times, "i guess you must know a thing or two about that... i just need a melatonin refill and to count some sheep tonight."
summer was so close she could taste it on her tongue. like most educators, lettie was counting down the days. she loved her students, their curiosity and quirks, but there was so much that she wanted to get done this summer. devaux house had spent too long in disarray, and she was determined to continue breathing life into it.
tapping her pen against the table as she reads through a list of books to be weeded, her gaze shifts to the man in front of her. "good morning, mr. brightman." perhaps there was a potential suggestiveness to his words, had they been heard by another library patron, but lettie's mind doesn't even go there. she stands up, tucking in her chair before stepping around the desk. "lead the way. i have," she trails off, checking her watch, "about fifteen minutes until the first graders arrive."
"the first graders have to wait, they don't know what it's like to have a sleepless night in the bad way yet," tone light as he springs backwards, the motions fluid as he turns so they can make their way out of the front, various balls bouncing in the netting with each cheery step. you would have never guessed he barely slept a wink. "it's shaping up to be a pretty good summer around here," met with some surprisingly in tune whistling as he heads towards the makeshift coaching trailer (put in place when the gym was undergoing work to hold barely 15 kids at a time). he opens the door to lead her in, ridding himself of his sporting goods as he releases the pink floral furnace and two travel cups, splashing the tea into it with barely a glance, "they're getting a new maths teacher. that's what i heard, apparently she finally retired."

where: magnolia school @prcphetgirl
when: june 17th , 10:45am.
it was that time of year, the fleeting jokes when he signed a yearbook with lucky, the good byes to those that wouldn't return next year, streaming sunlight through the window earlier and earlier. there were moments that he could almost forget the signs, overlook the circling crows and the wilting greenery that should have at least had chance to turn to the sun, open armed. the first break is in place and he's wandering into the library, net of footballs thrown over his shoulder as his hip slings against the library desk, a knock of his fist to catch her attention. "i've been having visions all morning… it's hazy but i'm pretty sure that i saw you, me," raise of an eyebrow, "an amazing chamomile tea."

in his earlier years, kaden had resigned to the fact that he might not ever have a best friend, so easily repelling through friendship groups with no true attachment. he had never imagined a lifetime when he would be so attached, so interlinked with another person that he would have felt that there wasn't enough in the world that he could do with them. there were times when he wondered how over the past six years, he had been given the first true luck of his life when it came to being given the gift of being close to someone like xingyu. the worst day of his life had led to one of his strongest bonds; it was crazy how life worked.
standing on the doorstep, the cake tin balanced in his hand, the rapping on the door not unfamiliar from him even at this hour, especially on this day. the years had fallen away, barriers that had existed no longer existed and kaden was sure that on this day... just for one more... he wanted to be human. to live in a world where the only thing on his mind was the person that he loved the most and seeing a smile on his face, seeing him understand how important he was. he couldn't believe there had been a time when this was just any other day...
when the door opens, free hand moves to adjust the lid, revealing beneath a strawberry cheesecake (or what may be considered as one), whipped cream hiding the sins of bad craftmanship. pink sticky note taken from his nieces stash and the final version of many crumbled trash can versions reading a simply happy birthday. "i know i'm early, but i couldn't wait for you to get here," he jokes, the grin on his face spreading when he announces, "happy birthday, xingyu."
as if he couldn't stand the seriousness, eye contact broken momentarily, "well, in one minute and 39 seconds…"
Everything hums before it pours ⌇

STEPHEN KALYN as DEAN DI LAURENTIS in OFF CAMPUS 01.01 'The Deal'
✧ THE COMPASS. STEPHEN KALYN. MALE. HE/HIM. ⸻ can you feel it, LUCKY “KADEN” BRIGHTMAN? it’s starting again. something’s coming up the creek bed — and soon, there’ll be nowhere left to hide. but i can tell by your eyes, you’re not the running type. yeah, you’re too COMMITTED and ANXIOUS for that, aren’t you? just about what i’d expect from a HUMAN. so you’ve been in magnolia creek YOUR WHOLE LIFE now? word travels fast in a small, dying town like this — i hear you’re TWENTY SEVEN years old and MOTEL NIGHT CLERK & SCHOOL COACH. don’t think that’ll help much in a fight against the hunger, but at least you’ve got your INTUITION. that’s more than i can say for most. i’ve seen this cycle turn before, and i think i know how it ends. you think it’ll end DIFFERENTLY? well. we’ll see. i’d love to be proven wrong in all this.
you have no marks, no calling, nothing to justify your presence here. so why are you still in magnolia creek, and what does it cost you, every day, to stay in a town that is quietly trying to consume everyone in it?
no mark. no calling. just the hands of destiny wringing around his neck time and time again. there were days when he felt that what happened to him was worse than those who had some kind of fated connection with darkness. he wasn’t spared in all of his humanity, something that seemed now to only make him weaker to a force that was way beyond anything that he could have comprehended as a college senior (or even now). the act of existing, the rebellion of survival had already cost him everything but luckily for them, his everything was nothing at all to most and therefore, it went unnoticed how much of himself had been lost out there on the field.
growing up, his father had encouraged him to get into sports, wanted him out there with the best of them. he had never been interested, dreams aligned with other things that he would never be allowed to try. he had worn the kit, been a certified bench warmer who was nobody’s first pick, read comic books from the sidelines and pretended he wasn’t there… he’d never imagined that his memories of football would one day turn from boredom to sheer anguish. these days even the sight of a game could leave him with weeks of shuddering, sweating night terrors… clawing at his own flesh to try and get the darkness out. even his mother avoided him for days after, pretending she didn’t hear those chilling screams night after night. no more lullabies.
eyes, shallow and blue, searching for someone to be on his side, to offer a justification for his presence as if existing wasn’t enough. the guilt of what he had done, a constant reminder that he could never go back… even if he didn’t know how to go forwards. “this is my home. this is where i’ve always been. one way or another, i’m tied up in all of this… so why shouldn’t i be here?” words that echoed more confidence than really held.
