âdidnât they teach you not to judge a dog by its cover at vet school?â he leaned down and scratched the chihuahua behind the ear; the animal instantly rolled over to expose his belly. âhe looks mean, but all he wants is belly rubs and her attention.â he nodded to starfire as he stood to let lettie take them back. in the time it took the dogs to get their checkup done and lettie to bring them back, alistair had closed his eyes in his chair and dozed off. sleep was something he didnât enjoy doing, so oftentimes, when his body was tired enough or was given a small break, heâd find himself dozing off somewhere random. a booth at frydayâs, against a tree in the park, and the veterinaryâs waiting room. caught off guard by lettieâs sudden arrival, he all but jumped out of his seat, barely stopping himself from leaping at her directly as he snatched back the leashes. âgreat, yeah; told you they didnât biteâŚâ he shook his head out, trying to dislodge sleep from his mind. grabbing one of the treats, alistair crouched down and held them out to both the dogs. âyou know theyâre not supposed to have treats before meals; shelterâs strict about that. which means I should give them two.â he glanced up at her almost smiling while he held out one hand as a question for more. âtheyâre begging.â
in her haste, she hadn't realized what she had interrupted, and lettie feels a bit guilty for having woken the man up. they didn't have another client for another hour; perhaps she should have let him get some rest? lettie tried not to let her mind wander to that dark place she dreamed of, but she finds herself wondering if he'd ever been able to get any rest there. what must it be like, six years with nothing but nightmares for company?
"i won't tell if you don't," she smiles, handing over the treats. there's something about the gentleness, the almost smile, that breaks her heart. her visions had never shown her his face, but his voice. it had revealed so much pain, hurt, and loneliness. it's difficult to reconcile the man before her with the one she'd seen curled into himself, calling out for those out of reach. some of the things he'd cried and screamed had stayed with her even after she'd woken, echoing in her head. the anger was palpable, of course, but above all else it was the loneliness that had made her feel ill.
"alistair." his name has passed her lips before she can stop it, and maybe now isn't the right time but was there ever a right time for what she felt she needed to do? "i dreamt of you, when you were...away. i know you couldn't hear me, but i just...i thought that you should know." i thought you should know that you weren't alone. that even if you couldn't hear me or see me, i was there, wishing i could do more than just stand by and watch. she clears her throat, unconsciously fiddling with her mother's ring which rests on her right ring finger. "and i know that you have plenty of people here who would be happy to be there for you, but if there's anything you need," she trails off, the adrenaline-fueled words finally fizzling out, "well, i'm here too."
HE CANâT IMAGINE THE WEIGHT OF IT ALL. how disorienting it must be for her, to see things you canât place, canât explain until itâs too late. how heavy it must be to carry the knowledge, to be the first to experience it before anyone else. how lonely. he wouldnât know how to hold it, what to do with it all. âthat must beâŚâ itâs said softly, barely audible as he canât finish the sentence, canât find the right words, canât convey how much he is trying to understand her and feels like heâll only come up short. instead, a soft touch to her shoulder, keeping steady eye contact. as if to say, i hope you know that iâm here for you. you donât have to do this alone. because what else can he do for her? âby him you meanâŚâ he begins to ask, hesitates to say the name, flashes of memories from the last time he saw him. â...alistair? in the void?â he tries to process what she means, that she had seen him before he had crawled onto the banks and everything started shifting. heâs not sure heâs ready to ask what sheâd seen, to know what his choicesâor lack of choicesâled to. heâs watching the way her face shifts as she talks about all her visions. maybe itâs not fair to ask to begin with. âhave you told him? that you saw him? or⌠does everyone else know, about your dreams?â
such a simple form of comfort, and yet at her friend's soft touch, at the way he meets her eyes and doesn't look away, lettie lets out a small breath. a burden shared is a burden halved, her mother used to say, only the one person she'd wanted to talk to about all of this hadn't been there to share it with. perhaps the burden isn't halved by sharing it with xingyu, but as she leans her head down, her cheek briefly resting on his hand, things do feel lighter. she blinks back tears, and for all of the darkness and anxiety leading to tonight, having xingyu on her side is a cherished bright spot.
straightening up, lettie nods. "yes, alistair." the man in question's gentleness with the animals the day they'd truly spoken for the first time comes to mind. "he knows. not all of the details, but it didn't feel right not saying anything."
the woman thinks of her cousin, of the way they would sometimes linger at her doorway following a particularly taxing dream. they've never spoken of it, but she knows they at least have some understanding. "lily knows. matteo, too. i'm not sure about the others."
the scream rips through the laundromat just as heâs watching his blood swirl pink in the drum. matteo jerks so fast he slams his hip into the coin-op door, white-hot, stupid pain shooting up his side hard enough to wring a hissed, âshitââ out of him, but his hand is already on her, fingers locking around her arm. one look at lettie's face and whatever curse was coming dies behind his teeth. because she's not looking at him. she's not looking at anything in the room. eyes wide open and fixed somewhere else, parked on something that sure as hell isnât here. matteoâs seen men knocked stupid in fights. seen bar drunks go glassy while the whole room pitched sideways around them. seen his ma sit dead quiet at the kitchen table, cigarette ash falling soft as snow over overdue bills, gone somewhere mean and far down inside her own skull. he knows that look. knows when somebody's still standing there but ain't all the way inside anymore. this is something elseâ not a fit, not panic. one of those goddamn sight-things. âheyâhey. eyes on me.â he yanks her hard enough to rattle her. matteo doesnât know shit about gentle. gentleâs for people who got room for it. his free hand hovers stupidly near her cheek, like maybe thereâs something useful in it, like maybe heâs the kind of man who knows how to do comfort. he isnât. he knows pressure. impact. how to keep something from coming apart by throwing his own weight against it until his bones start to ache. so he drags lettie closer instead, keeping her upright before whatever has hold of her can pull the rest along with it. behind them, the machines keep up their idiot racket, wet denim hammering steel like locked-out fists. âcome on. iâve already dealt with enough shit today.â
it's difficult to identify the end of the vision. one moment, she can feel the ground crumbling beneath her feet and the next she's aware of strong arms holding her up. the pressure isn't suffocating; it's the firm press of a hand over a wound, necessary and vital. she allows herself to relax into it slightly, to take a moment to get her bearings. blinking, her gaze settles not on scorched earth, but on a bulletin board filled with yellowed posters and adverts. the last sense to return is her hearing, screaming replaced with the sound of an old washing machine fighting a losing battle against bloodstained clothes.
usually, there was no one to witness the aftermath. lettie could process or not process it however she saw fit, safely behind closed doors. she could sit with the ache in her head, the burning in her throat, the tightness in her chest, and close her eyes until it wore off. there's something shameful in being seen like this, the little voice in her head hissing strange, wrong, abominable.
a shaky hand reaches up, squeezing matteo's arm, trying to signal that she's present. lettie always struggled to speak after a vision, the way you'd try to cry out in a nightmare but be met with only silence. after another minute or so, she's able to clear her throat, words tumbling out after as if of their own volition. "it's watching us. it's...waiting, but i don't," she trails off, struggling to clear her throat again.
who cares?? me. so much

if alistair and lettie had one thing in common, it was their preference for showing animals kindness before people. granted, it may not have been as solid a preference as his, lettieâs in greeting them and not on a whole, but it was a common ground he was not unhappy to see in the womanâs attention to the dogs; a faint expression of approval on his face. but, then she dropped her pen and looked at him like he was a ghost, and his expression dimmed back into the one of apathy he usually wore. of course. it was a look he was used to now, even if it annoyed him to no end. usually it came from people he knew before heâd âdiedâ, but occasionally, such as the current case, it came from people who knew him through the rumor mill or news clippings, as if theyâd seen an urban legend come to life and didnât know how to process that. usually, alistair would let this kind of reaction to his presence change the course of his day, give people something to react to, but he was having a good day. he wanted to have a good day; it was a dog day, and he wasnât going to let this stranger's reaction get in the way of what he wanted. âare you afraid of dogs? they donât bite if thatâs what youâre nervous about.â he handed her one of the leashes, but held onto the other, not letting go until he dryly joked. âneither do I.â
his face changes, something closing off, and a feeling of guilt creeps in. alistair had seemed so light when he'd first stepped foot in the office, and lettie hates that her reaction has dimmed things. if anyone deserved peace, it was him.
the brunette takes the leash he offers her, leaning down to scratch behind the larger dog's ears. the position allows her a moment to collect herself, to try to scramble together the composure she draws on when her abilities try to make themselves known.
"i don't know, nightwing looks rather vicious," her tone is artificially light as she grips the other leash, gaze shifting from the tiny dog to the man in front of her. how strange it is to finally put a face to the voice she'd been hearing, to the figure she'd seen curled up, all alone. while she dreamed, she'd have given anything to be able to reach out and touch him, to provide some form of comfort, and now here he is, his fingers only inches away.
she clears her throat, shaking her head slightly before her lips quirk up. "dr. camber is expecting them. i'll be right back and then they can get some much-deserved breakfast."
it doesn't take long for dr. camber to collect the vials needed for their bloodwork. starfire is a bit nervous, so lettie steps in to help, rubbing gentle circles in the dog's fluffy ears to calm her. ten minutes, fifteen at most, and then she's returning to the lobby, leashes in one hand and treats in the other.
"they did great," she responds with a small smile, handing over the leashes. "dr. camber will get in touch with the shelter once the results come in." she reaches out, offering alistair the treats.
xingyu just nods quietly, at first, the mention of her mother causing his eyes to drift in the direction of the neighborhood, roofs jutting out over the trees. he grew up hearing rumors about the devauxs, that he shouldnât go near the house just down the road. whispers that they were cursed, or that the house was haunted. that a daughter ran away and never looked back. he had figured by lettieâs last name that she must be related in some way. but xingyu had never been one to put stock in the town gossip, so realizing the fact never changed that much for him, never made him question her before. eyebrows raise at the new information, then knit into slight concern. he shifts on the bench to face her better. âdreams?â he repeats, more to himself as he processes it. he shouldnât be too surprised, he supposes â with friends who grew up as slayers their whole life and he was none the wiser; with a werewolf and vampires joining their circle; with the knowledge that something unfathomable lurks underneath town. and as much as he tries to understand it all, in truth he doesnât know anything else except being human. âwhen did you start having them?â he asks, tries to contain all the questions he has but another spills forth. âare they⌠about random things? about our group? aboutâŚâ he trails off. he means the hunger, but heâs unable to finish the sentence, like speaking about it directly will conjure it before them.
catharsis. it was a term her favorite college professor had used when talking about why they needed to address the ugly parts of literature, of history. there was a phrase he had shared that lettie would never forget; sunlight can be antiseptic. bringing things to light, allowing them to be seen, could be cleansingâhealing, even. unfortunately, no part of this feels cathartic. if anything, it's making her skin crawl. strange. wrong. abominable. what if xingyu and the others started seeing her the way she saw this part of herself?
"it started a month before i moved here." three days before her mother died, before her life split into before and after. "sometimes, i'll hear the name of the book a student wants read for story time. other times, it's this awful feeling in my chest and then i'll see that thalia's written an obituary for a name that i recognize." for the first time since she started talking about her abilities, lettie looks over at her friend. "this summer, it's pretty much been the same thing, over and over. this...void and then him." it had been so dark, so cavernous, so lonely. lettie could tell that the man was hurting, but there was nothing that she could do but watch. "i didn't know who he was until he came back."
"the first graders have to wait, they don't know what it's like to have a sleepless night in the bad way yet," tone light as he springs backwards, the motions fluid as he turns so they can make their way out of the front, various balls bouncing in the netting with each cheery step. you would have never guessed he barely slept a wink. "it's shaping up to be a pretty good summer around here," met with some surprisingly in tune whistling as he heads towards the makeshift coaching trailer (put in place when the gym was undergoing work to hold barely 15 kids at a time). he opens the door to lead her in, ridding himself of his sporting goods as he releases the pink floral furnace and two travel cups, splashing the tea into it with barely a glance, "they're getting a new maths teacher. that's what i heard, apparently she finally retired."
the brunette shakes her head at her friend's comment, a short laugh following. "you have a point," she responds, falling into step behind him. it's an easy routine, one they've settled into since second semester last year. lettie looks forward to these little breaks and the levity that usually comes with lucky's company. as the door closes behind them, she sinks into her usual spot, a stool that looks as if it probably spent some of its life in the science lab. "really? i thought ms. crowe would be here until the state finally decides to shut us down," she half-jokes. once kaden has passed her the cup, she takes a sip before letting out a pleased sigh. "so," she continues, shifting in her seat, "another sleepless night?" there's a hint of concern in her voice, in the way her brows furrow.

summer was so close she could taste it on her tongue. like most educators, lettie was counting down the days. she loved her students, their curiosity and quirks, but there was so much that she wanted to get done this summer. devaux house had spent too long in disarray, and she was determined to continue breathing life into it.
tapping her pen against the table as she reads through a list of books to be weeded, her gaze shifts to the man in front of her. "good morning, mr. brightman." perhaps there was a potential suggestiveness to his words, had they been heard by another library patron, but lettie's mind doesn't even go there. she stands up, tucking in her chair before stepping around the desk. "lead the way. i have," she trails off, checking her watch, "about fifteen minutes until the first graders arrive."
she couldn't help but allow her smile - at the idea of ridding magnolia creek of creepy paul - fall when the girl before her denied her offer. it was a chance to indulge in her deepest desires and if it were approved of... then she would not have to worry about backlash.
but her focus was soon elsewhere. the witch before her instead propositioned the idea of odette joining her for glasses of wine. while it was not her preferred beverage, she did enjoy the idea of perhaps being invited into lettie's home. how beneficial could that be down the road, she wondered? "lead the way," the vampire said, motioning for the girl before her to start walking. she took one last drag of her cigarette before stomping it out on the pavement and following in her direction.
lettie hadn't grown up on stories of magnolia creek. calla had never warned her not to open the door if a familiar voice called her name at night, never told her not to follow pawprints into the woods. if the lights went out while she was telling a story, lettie probably would have just lit some candles and kept talking. even now, after six years, there is folklore the young woman isn't privy to. she knows that there is something about odette that ties her to the darker parts of magnolia creek, but the specifics are out of reach.
it's dark, but the path has become familiar over the past year. not quite bright enough lampposts line the pier with seldom-repaired benches on either side. at first glance, none of it looks entirely stable, but lettie has spent enough time here to know that it'll hold their weight. once they reach the end, the brunette takes a seat on the sturdiest-looking bench and reaches into her bag. it's too dark for her to see the waves, but they are loud below them. lettie hands one of the bottles to the other woman before unscrewing the top of her own. "cheers," she offers, bottle raised.

I canât just turn this on. Iâm not like you guys. I donât have claws, or glowing eyes or super senses. I just have voices visions in my head.
the detergent in her hand catches his eyeâbold red cheer! hollering against the pallor of his face, loud and stupidly bright under the laundromatâs wasp-buzz lights. the kind of cheerful thatâs never limped home half-dead with somebody elseâs blood drying cold on its sleeves. at the mention of a first-aid kit, that same gaze cuts toward the back room too fast. the light back there keeps flickering on and off, like a bad thought that wonât die, and his mind is already pawing through the possibilities: iodine, peroxide, gauze. then straight past them, toward the chance of something stronger shoved where it shouldnât be, something useful to sand down the raw scrape of his nerves. by the time sense comes limping in after instinct, matteoâs already reached for the detergent, fingers brushing hers only long enough to steal the scoop. his own hand is rough as busted pavement, nicked to hell, dried blood and ash ground deep into the lines of his knuckles like theyâve rented the place for good. âdepends whatâs in that kit,â he says, voice dragged sideways into something that could almost pass for playful if you didnât listen close enough to hear the rust in it. he dumps the detergent in with all the care of a man whoâs never treated anything carefully in his life. blue powder rattling into the drum and spilling over the rim in a soft chemical dusting, some of it catching on the scuffed toes of his boots, some of it vanishing into the grime already living there. âif itâs just iodine and disappointment, iâll pass.â
the thing about the visions, the ones she still likes to think of as dreams, is that they didnât always happen while she was sleeping. that was when they would most frequently slip in, her defenses down and the facade of normalcy only an echo, but it wasnât the only time. they were unpredictable, uncontrollable, and happening at an ever increasing rate.
maybe itâs the proximity, the brush of a slayer's bloodied knuckles; maybe it was nothing more than a coincidence.
one moment sheâs standing beside matteo in the old laundromat, and the next sheâs somewhere else. the first thing that registers is how wrong it feels. thereâs an underlying sense of dread, an ashy taste on her tongue, and the feeling of something heavy and old in her hands. the weight is familiar, the scent one of old books tucked away on a shelf, although thereâs a subtler note of decay. she glances down, but instead of seeing a book weathered by time, thereâs scorched earth and something rising from it. itâs a feeling more than anything else, a knowing; lettie canât actually see what is emerging from the ground, but it can see her. an almost familiar laugh breaks the silence and then the ground is crumbling beneath her feet, and someoneâs screaming and she thinks it might be her, now.
đ¤Â closed for lettie devaux ,đ sawtooth veterinary clinic, đ july 8th, 11:25 am @prcphetgirl
it was an oddly good day for alistair; the sun was high, the fog that clung to the town wasnât nearly as thick as it usually was, and he was working at the shelter. Some days that meant hours of shoveling crap and hauling food around, other days it meant being mobbed by the more rambunctious animals that kept their energy despite the way town made most skittish, and today that meant taking two new residents to the vet for a routine checkup. above him a bell rang as he walked through the door and into the clinic; the smell of damp fur and antiseptic greeting him in a way that would make most noses crinkle, but had him drawing in a deeper breath. once upon a time, before he had to become something else to survive, he dreamed of working in this clinic; maybe opening his own, helping animals, and living each day doing something he enjoyed rather than something he settled for. but that was before, and this was after, so he could only find that joy in little ways now. the smell of dreams softened alistair's usual edges as he walked up to the front desk and signed the check-in sheet. it seemed he was the only person there at the moment, aside from the woman who manned the desk in front of him. he rapped the desk twice before speaking. âdo you know how long itâll be?â his tone was even as he gestured first to a red goldendoodle and then a black chihuahua. âstarfire and nightwing havenât eaten cause they gotta get bloodwork done, and theyâre starting to get cranky.â
"i'm sorry, ms. prescott. we still haven't seen your baby, but i promise i'll call if i hear anything." lettie wraps the phone cord around her finger as she bites her lip, the sniffle on the other side of the phone causing her to wince. "why don't i stop by after work and i can help you take another look in the shed?" a hiccup answers her question, but after another minute or so, ms. prescott has agreed and is off to her knitting club.
the bell rings just as the brunette returns the phone to its receiver. turning, she sees the furry visitors first. itâs something the doctor always jokingly chastised her for (âdo try to greet the human guests first!â), but was a habit lettie couldnât kick. a bright smile rises to her lips.
usually, she would be making her way around the desk to fuss over the patients. usually, however, the voice that breaks the quiet was one she only heard in her nightmares? dreams.
the pen sheâd been holding slips from her fingers and she hears it roll somewhere under her desk as her gaze shifts from the pups to a face sheâs only seen in photographs. news segments, memorials, an obituary. she had know that alistair was back; she had not known that it had been him sheâd been seeing each night for the past month.
âiâŚi can take them,â she manages to get out, voice tiny and hands shaky as she steps hesitantly around the desk.
THE PHRASE MAKES A GHOST OF A SMILE APPEAR ON HIS LIPS. itâs lily. that was the truth of it, wasnât it? that if anything, he would follow her anywhere, even if it meant into something he had yet to understand. and perhaps that was true for lettie as well. but something in his gut tells him that the group is teetering on the edge of no return, and tonight may very well push them over. or maybe it was always going to end up this way, decided on that halloween six years ago. âi donât know, either,â he admits, leaning back onto the bench. the circles the group has been going in has left everything still murky, dead ends after dead ends. âmaybe weâll finally get answers. or some kind of direction.â xingyu knows that in the end, it canât be him to decide any of that. he doesnât have the training of the slayers, or the knowledge of the ones who have lived at least a century longer than him. heâs come to understand most of everyoneâs roles in this, why lily decided to gather such a group together. but what about lettie? he never expected her to be a part of any of this. his friendship with lettie has been amongst the most normal parts since staying in magnolia creek. bringing the subject forth feels like bursting a bubble that surrounds them on this bench, from the rest of the secrets that lurk beneath the town. but the question has simmered beneath the surface, and itâs harder to keep letting it go unnoticed. heâs been trying to eschew his fears, start tackling these things head on. itâs the only way theyâll get anywhere. maybe it starts here. âcan i ask you another question?â he asks, with the same gentleness as the wind that skirts the harbor. a beat, as he gathers his thoughts. âabout⌠how you got involved in all this?âÂ
some kind of direction. for a moment, lettie almost mentions the library, her and lily's late night (or was it early morning?) trek through a room the librarian had never seen. if anything gave direction, it was a prophecy, however vague and sinister they tended to be (in stories this is the first she's encountered in reality). despite her vision leading them to it, it doesn't quite feel like her secret to share, and so she leaves it be.
the gentleness in her friend's voice is what ultimately brings her to answer. mindlessly tapping her fingers against the bottle of water, lettie gives a small nod before her gaze shifts from her hands to the waves across from their bench. "my mother was from magnolia creek." it wasn't exactly a secret, the devaux name an old and familiar one in the town. it was a name synonymous with suspicion, with whispers, with a debt never fully paid. she had not understood all that came with it until she had arrived just over six years ago; she still isn't sure she fully understands.
perhaps the familial connection was enough to explain her involvement, but lettie continues. the words feel odd on her tongue, as if the muscle isn't used to such honesty. "i've been dreaming about it...whatever's happening. or has happened, or will happen. i can't really tell the difference sometimes." when her visions dreams visions came, time didn't work the way that it was supposed to.
i hope i can sleep straight through the madness. but i canât even tell when iâm sleeping anymore.

âˇÂ TIME ăł july 11th, 9:00am âˇÂ PLACE ăłhawthorne pier âˇÂ FT. ăłÂ lettie devaux ( @prcphetgirl )
IN THE MORNING, MAGNOLIA CREEK ALMOST FEELS WHOLE. the sun crests over the low profile of the rundown buildings, through the tops of the pine trees, light washing over the rot, however temporary. those precious few hours are enough to motivate xingyu to wake up early and placate the past that edges at his heels. the other motivation is his weekly runs with lettie. born from their shared hobby, itâs become something to look forward to. he enjoys the routine of it, of doing something to keep his body moving, if only so it can distract him from whatever had been going on that week. or in this case, what has been going on in the past month. if he can just focus on this and work and stay close to his friends, then he can keep himself afloat. because itâs the people that anchor him, that make him want to be someone better. today, the two have stopped by a bench along the pier, included on a path xingyu likes to run from time to time, partially for the nostalgia of having once lived in hawthorne harbor. he sits down, wipes at the sweat upon his forehead, extends a bottle of water out to lettie. as heartbeat comes to rest, the note lily left him springs forth to his mind, again. midnight. maroon peak. come. âyou know, iâve been meaning to askâŚâ he starts, staring out at the waves that come to lap against the abandoned boats moored here. xingyu hasnât dared to talk much, if at all, about whatâs been brewing for the past few weeks amongst the group. as much as heâs adjusted to the situation, he still finds it difficult to be the first to broach the subject of⌠well. where do you even begin?
he turns back to lettie. âyou got the note too, right? from lily?â
lettie had spent six years pretending that magnolia creek was just another struggling, aging town. sure, there was the odd rustling in the woods and the feeling of eyes tracking her as she made her way home. there were flickering lights and haunted faces and visions dreams. there was her cousin, strange and wise in equal measure, and the others in her home who glanced at her with knowing eyes. there were the obituaries, the haunted looks on her friendâs faces when october reared its head each year. but with enough small talk, enough distractions, she could play pretend.
xingyu was not a distraction, but running always had been. it was a routine sheâd slipped into after arriving in the town, although it wasnât something she actually enjoyed until their paths crossed. the young doctor was a bright spot in the town, kind to the core. their weekly run was a ritual the witch woman treasured.
slightly out of breath, she gives a grateful smile as she takes the offered water. the cool liquid glides down her throat as she looks out over the harbor. devaux house is just out of sight, and she briefly thinks of everything thatâs still left to do before she can move in; itâs easier to focus on home renovations than whatâs stirring in magnolia creek.
lettieâs grip tightens on the water bottle as xingyu breaks the silence, and it takes her a moment to reply. sheâs spent so long pretending, but with the meeting mere hours away, is there a point in keeping up the charade?
âi did,â she nods, glancing over at him. itâs difficult to tell if heâs as unsure about all of this as she is. this has never been something theyâve really broached before. hell, until the last month or so, she hasnât broached it with anyone. âi donât know what to expect, butâŚitâs lily,â she finishes, as if that explains it all. because if lily was the one asking, how could they say no?
* ⤡ closed starter, for @prcphetgirl âââ july 2nd, in a corner booth at fryday's.
even after six years, half a decade of lettie's existence not only being in their per-view, but at the forefront of loretta's own mind, they still sat restless, shifting amongst the squeaky, cracked vinyl of fryday's booths. love in action, love in blood, but never words â loretta was never good at those. " how are you... â how are you doing? " a wide, unblinking stare, words punctuated by a clearing of their throat. after twenty-something years without a concept of family, it was still an uphill battle to just be. though, what they meant to say was: have you seen anything? the air has been thick, stinking of something they couldn't exactly put words to yet. but, their cousin's powers remained something short of taboo â loretta knowing all too well what it felt like to have conversations centered around ability, rather than simply being. " i saw a new cat outside the house yesterday â left 'em a can of wet food, but they were too skittish to take it. 'm hoping the food's gone by the time i get back tonight. thought you'd want to know. "
when lettie first arrived in magnolia creek, she hadnât known what to expect. she certainly hadnât expected to find loretta, someone who seemed comfortable with all of the things that lettie struggled to face. someone who offered her quiet companionship without questions, who offered her a second chance at a family. on first glance, they were an odd pair, and on second glance, even odder, but loretta lowe was in large part why lettie had stayed in magnolia creek. why, for all its faults, she sometimes even thinks of it as home.
lettie takes in the creak of the seat, the undertone of her cousinâs question. a fond smile tugs at her lips as she adds more salt to the french fries. âthanks for looking out for them. iâll try to see if theyâve got an ear tip.â
it would be easy to breeze past their previous question and the meaning behind it, to use her trademark smile and casual air, but the changes in town have even her feeling on edge. lettie chews a fry thoughtfully before swallowing, brown eyes shifting to her cousin. âthings feelâŚdifferent lately. since,â and here she trails off, not a face coming to mind but a voice. raw and ragged, familiar after weeks of nightly visions dreams. she clears her throat before continuing, âdo you feel it too?â
