First just a random pic of Jack's angry head with no hat.
And then another barrage of self indulgence! Fanart!
And words to go with it!
_ _ _
Iβd been staring at the same paragraph long enough to suspect it was changing every time I blinked. The file lay open beneath the pale pool of my desk lamp, stuffed with conflicting dates, cramped testimony, and handwriting apparently produced during an earthquake. I rubbed the space between my eyes, leaned closer, and gave it one more chance to cooperate.
The office door opened quietly behind me. I recognized Brie by the soft rhythm of her steps and kept one finger planted beside the line I was trying to read. βYouβre late,β I said.
βSo were you.β
βI was here first.β
βI don't think that's what late means.β
I smiled despite myself. βThereβs coffee in the pot. I canβt promise the pot survived it.β
She crossed the office without answering. I expected her to pull up the other chair or perch against my desk, but her footsteps stopped directly behind me. Two small hands settled upon my shoulders.
I glanced back. βHello.β
βHello.β
Her thumbs pressed into the tight muscles on either side of my neck. Every word in front of me vanished as though the page had gone blank. She worked slowly at first, feeling out the tension through my shirt, and then drove both thumbs firmly downward.
My back straightened like a rod involuntarily. βGreat Gouda!β
It made Brie gasp. βToo hard?β
βNo.β I lowered my head a little, giving her better access. βIβm reconsidering several assumptions Iβve made about you.β
βWhat assumptions?β
βThat I could take you in a fair fight.β
She gave my right shoulder a particularly solid squeeze. βYou're making that face.β
I looked up at her as far as the angle allowed. βWhat face?β
βThe one you make when something feels good and you donβt want anybody to know.β
βI donβt have a face for that.β
βYou do. Your eyebrows go up.β
βMy back nearly folded in half. That was alarm.β
βAnd yet you havenβt told me to stop.β
I hadnβt. I wasnβt going to, either. Brieβs hands were smaller than mine, but there was nothing delicate about the pressure she applied. Her thumbs found every hard ridge I had been ignoring for the past week and worried at them with the grim patience of someone settling a personal score.
βWhere did you learn to do this?β I asked.
βI have hands, Jack.β
βSo do I. Mine donβt know how to do that.β
βYours spend all day holding coffee, cigarettes, and other peopleβs problems. They havenβt had time to learn.β
I let the file fall flat on the desk. βYouβve been hiding this from me.β
βYou never asked.β
βI didnβt know that I could ask.β
Her fingers slid beneath the edge of my collar, brushing the fur at the base of my neck before returning to my shoulders. A slow, treacherous warmth worked its way down my spine, and I felt myself sinking into the chair. Then something brushed lightly against one of the chair legs.
...My tail.
I tightened it around my ankle before it could do anything stupid. The matter was handled. I was still master of every part of my person, and no evidence existed to the contrary. ThenΒ Brie pressed her thumbs beside my spine. A low sound escaped me before I could stop it, and my tail slipped loose, giving one pleased flick behind the chair.
She paused. βOh! Did I hurt you?β
I reached up, caught one of her wrists, and put her hand back exactly where it had been. βYou'll only hurt me if you stop.β
βI thought I broke something.β
βIf you did, keep going. There might be a better spine underneath.β
She resumed more gently, which was pleasant but unacceptable. I tipped my head forward and murmured, βHarder.β
βReally?β
βBrie, Iβve spent years being punched by mice twice your size. And rats at least four times your size. You ain't gonna hurt me.β
She dug both thumbs into a knot beneath my shoulder blades with enough force to drive the rest of my dignity out through my teeth.Β Cheesus! My shoulders jumped, my fingers locked around the brim of the table, and my tail whipped free from my ankle.
Brie leaned over me, her voice warm with amusement. βYou were saying?β
βI...may have spoken too soon.β
βI thought so.β
She kept working, easing the pressure only after the knot finally began to surrender. I tried pinning my tail beneath one heel, but it pulled itself loose and made another lazy pass across the floor. I caught it against the chair leg. It slid around the other side. By then the ungrateful thing had apparently decided it was enjoying the massage independently of me.
I attempted one last discreet maneuver, curling it tightly around my shin. Brieβs fingers moved higher, kneading the base of my neck, and my tail uncoiled at once. It began swishing behind me in slow, contented arcs.
There are moments in a mouseβs life when denial is the only remaining defense. I closed my eyes and hoped Brie was too preoccupied with my shoulders to notice what was happening at floor level. This hope survived for nearly four seconds.
βJack?β
βHm?β
βIs your tail trying to dust the floor?β
My eyes opened. βNo.β
She squeezed my shoulders again. The traitor swept broadly from one side of the chair to the other.
Brie glanced down. βIt seems very enthusiastic about something.β
β Nuh, its just a draft it can feel. Old building.β
"Of course.β She pressed her thumbs into another tight spot, and my tail immediately picked up speed. βIt clearly loves drafts.β
I reached down and caught it in one hand. βYou could pretend you didnβt see that.β
βI could.β
βThat would be kind of you.β
βIt would.β She bent closer, her cheek almost brushing mine. βBut then you might keep pretending you arenβt enjoying yourself.β
βI never said I wasnβt.β
βYou were trying to hide the evidence under your foot.β
βIt was becoming unruly.β
βPoor Jack Pepper. Overthrown by his own tail.β
Heat crept into my ears. I could face down armed men without blinking, but one small woman with strong hands and an observant streak could reduce me to holding my own tail like a misbehaving toddler. βIt has a mind of its own,β I muttered. I couldn't believe I was this embarrassed over my own tail.
Brie laughed softly. βApparently itβs more honest than the rest of you.β
She resumed the massage before I could assemble a respectable answer. After a moment my grip relaxed, my tail slipped from my fingers, and the damned thing went right back to swishing. I considered fighting it again, but Brieβs thumbs found the place where my neck met my shoulders, and discipline ceased to seem important.
βYouβre terribly knotted,β she said.
βThat sounds judgmental.β
βItβs an observation.β
βIβve had a long day.β
βFeels like you've had a long month.β
βTouche.β
I reached behind the chair and slipped an arm around her waist, drawing her closer. Brie leaned over me without resistance, and I turned my head to press a kiss against the inside of her wrist. Her fingers softened against my shoulder.
βAll of that....was underhanded,β I murmured.
βThe massage?β
βThere was no warning and I couldn't defend myself.β
"Why, Mr. Detective, the enemy never cares about if you are caught unawares or not."
I gave her a narrow look. βYouβre enjoying this.β
βVery much. Better?βΒ she asked.
βMuch.β
βCan you turn your head now?β
I tested it carefully from side to side. βFull range of motion. Modern medicine has nothing on you.β
Brie tittered in appreciation. βI could have been a doctor, one of my aunties said! Or a...pro wrestler....I'm not exactly sure why." she stuttered reluctantly.
βYou should come by every night.β
βIβm not joining your staff.β
βIβll put your name on the door.β
βWith what salary?β
βCoffee.β
βThe coffee that may have dissolved the pot?β
βFree coffee.β
Brie lifted her hands from my shoulders. The absence was immediate and unacceptable, so I reached back, caught both wrists, and drew her arms loosely around my neck.
βI didnβt say you could stop,β I said. For the love of Saint Stilton I was whining when I said that.
βYou started negotiating wages.β
βIβll double them.β
βTwo cups of terrible coffee?β
βAaaand a kiss?β
She leaned down until her cheek brushed mine. βA kiss from whom?β
I turned my face toward hers, our noses nearly touching. βLet me make a few calls.β
Brie laughed and kissed me on the nose before straightening. I caught one of her hands, pressed it firmly back to my shoulder, and gave her what I hoped was a dignified, expectant look.
βYouβll get spoiled,β she said.
βToo late.β
Her fingers began working into my shoulders again, solid and sure. I settled deeper into the chair as the open file waited beneath the lamp, its troublesome paragraphs losing every competition for my attention. My tail continued swishing shamelessly behind me. Ah ta hell with it. This time I let it win.

Celia Hartwell was once a talented actress in Mouseburg's entertainment industry. She was known for her elegance, emotional performances, and ability to capture an audience's attention.
During her younger years, she dreamed of becoming a famous actress and reaching the highest levels of the entertainment world. She shared this dream with Betty Lynch and Vivian McCarthy, two ambitious actresses who were willing to do whatever it took to succeed.
However, unlike Betty and Vivian, Celia was never interested in fame only for power or status. She wanted to be remembered for her talent and the emotions she could bring to others.
She believed in the magic of performance.
Unfortunately, she eventually learned that the world behind the stage was far darker than she imagined.
---
# **Relationship with Betty Lynch**
Celia was one of Betty Lynch's closest friends.
She knew Betty before she became deeply involved with powerful figures, criminals, and politicians. While Celia understood Betty's ambition, she did not always agree with the methods Betty used to advance her career.
Betty was willing to make dangerous deals and manipulate powerful people to obtain opportunities, but Celia saw the person behind those choices.
To Celia, Betty was not simply a ruthless actress.
She was someone who desperately wanted to be seen, remembered, and recognized.
After Betty's murder, Celia refused to accept that her friend's death was merely a consequence of her own choices.
She believed Betty became a victim of people who were far more dangerous than she realized.
The tragedy of Betty's death forced Celia to confront the ugly reality hidden beneath Mouseburg's entertainment industry.
---
# **Relationship with Vivian McCarthy**
Celia and Vivian have a complicated but meaningful friendship.
Vivian is ambitious, clever, and willing to cross moral boundaries to achieve her goals. Celia understands Vivian's determination but often disagrees with her methods.
Where Vivian believes survival requires manipulation, Celia believes there must still be limits.
Despite their differences, Vivian respects Celia because she was one of the few people who saw Betty as a person rather than a rival.
Celia represents the part of their old friendship that existed before everything became about success, influence, and survival.
---
# **Connection to Steve Bandel**
Celia never personally worked with Steve Bandel, but she knew of him long before Betty's death.
As an actress, she attended Steve's magic shows and admired his ability to control an audience.
To Celia, Steve was not merely a magician performing tricks.
He was a performer who understood something important:
People do not only want to see reality.
Sometimes they want to believe in something impossible.
Through Betty, Celia also heard many stories about Steve's personality behind the stage. She learned that beneath his dramatic image, he was someone who genuinely cared about those close to him.
After Betty's death, Celia views Steve with sympathy. She sees him not only as the famous magician, but as another person who lost someone important and struggled with that grief.
---
# **View of the Big Mouse Party (BMP)**
Celia does not see the Big Mouse Party as a political organization.
To her, BMP is a criminal organization wearing the appearance of a political movement.
She has seen firsthand how they operate:
* They use people when they are useful.
* They remove anyone who becomes a threat.
* They manipulate public opinion.
* They hide criminal actions behind promises of a better future.
Because of Betty's death, Celia understands that BMP is not simply corrupt.
They are dangerous because they can make cruelty appear respectable.
---
# **Celia's Thoughts on BMP Supporters**
Unlike many people who oppose BMP, Celia does not hate ordinary supporters.
Instead, she feels uneasy and saddened when she sees them.
As a former actress, she understands the power of performance.
She knows how easily people can believe in a carefully created image.
To Celia, BMP's speeches are another kind of stage show.
The difference is that this performance has real consequences.
She worries that many supporters do not understand what exists behind the curtain.
> "They don't know what they're cheering for..."
---
# **Personality**
Celia is calm, intelligent, and observant.
Years as an actress taught her how to read emotions and understand people. She can recognize lies, hidden motives, and false kindness.
Although she has become tired and cautious after everything she has experienced, she has not lost her compassion.
She does not consider herself a hero.
She is simply someone who refuses to forget the people who were sacrificed for someone else's ambitions.
---
# **Relationship with Milford Soyer**
Milford sees Celia as both a potential threat and an interesting individual.
He recognizes that she has the same stubborn strength that Arthur once possessed.
Rather than openly threatening her, Milford approaches her with kindness and offers his "protection."
He may offer:
* Safety from dangerous people
* Financial support
* Opportunities to rebuild her career
However, Celia understands the truth behind his generosity.
Milford's protection is not freedom.
It is control.
She knows that accepting his help would mean becoming another person under his influence.
To Celia, Milford is the most dangerous type of person:
Someone who can smile while taking away another person's choices.
---
# **Relationship with Arthur**
Arthur and Celia share a quiet and deep connection based on mutual understanding.
They are both people who lost the worlds they once believed in.
Arthur lost his political career and his dream of changing Mouseburg.
Celia lost her acting career, her friend Betty, and her faith in the world behind the stage.
Both once stood in front of crowds.
Arthur gave speeches.
Celia performed.
Both understood the power of making people believe.
After losing everything, they became two people who no longer need to pretend around each other.
Their relationship is not about saving one another.
They do not erase each other's pain.
Instead, they simply make carrying that pain easier.
Arthur does not ask Celia to forget Betty.
Celia does not ask Arthur to forget his failures.
They understand that some wounds remain because they represent something important.
Their bond is built on small moments:
* Sitting together in silence
* Sharing memories without judgment
* Offering comfort without demanding anything in return
* Allowing each other to stop pretending
For Celia, Arthur is someone who sees her as more than a former actress.
For Arthur, Celia is someone who sees him as more than a failed politician.
They do not need to fix each other.
They simply remind each other that they are still human.
