I’m stressing out about my future instead of cleaning up desk. Also, I’m returning to France this weekend to sort out everything.
73 days until finals (okay typing that actually made my stomach do a nervous flip)
Just a chill day of looking over notes and making new ones. I’m moving into contract this week which is BY FAR my weakest subject, since I studied it 3 years ago at this point (what?!)
Wish me luck ⭐️

success should not come from deprivation. studyblr community, this is a reminder.
my three idols in middle school — rory gilmore, spencer hastings, and hermione granger — were all bookish, type-a, deeply intelligent young women who were brilliant students and good role models, but they taught me from a young age that success requires suffering.
i am tired of seeing students forgo food and sleep and time to themselves. i am tired of seeing students use adderall to stay awake all night and make it through exams the next day. i am tired of seeing students live off of coffee and a bite of a muffin at six am. we see these narratives on tv and they play out in the dorm room next to me.
my friend has five meetings today after a full day of classes. “thank you so much,” he says when i offer to drop off food at his dorm. “i was just planning to not eat today.”
i am tired of the narrative that isolation and deprivation are the key to a good life, that high performance in school is key to a happy future, that painful sacrifice now will pay off later.
you are more important than your grades, your notes, your burning eyes in the morning when your alarm goes off far too early. you deserve a balanced life and a life that is enriched by your studies and not damaged by them.
you deserve to go to sleep when you are tired. you deserve to eat when you are hungry. you deserve to take a break from studying.
you are the most important thing in your life. please treat yourself with care.
i promise you this: whoever you're becoming, however much effort you're putting in everyday, whatever it is you're working towards outweighs the person you've been and the mistakes you've made. who you are today matters. you are not ruined.
study less study smart
I decided to share my notes taken from this amazing 1 hour Youtube lecture by Marty Lobdell. i really liked him and his tips, i think they are super effective and cover a lot of situations! i highly recommend it!!!!! wow
but here are the tips and examples Marty mentions, so if you don’t have the time to go through the full hour, you can just scroll down. hope this helps somebody!
Break your study time in chunks with breaks
most students lose focus at 25 minutes
it’s a mistake to keep going once you do, since you won’t actually learn anything and you’ll hate every minute of it
so when you start losing focus take a 5 minute break
do something nice like talking to someone or listening to music
it’s something you practice so with time you’ll be able to work for more time without losing focus
in the end of the study session have a big reward you look forward to
Create a study area
environment highly affects the way you act. Bedrooms are for sleeping, kitchens for eating: you’ll feel sleepy in your bedroom and hungry in the kitchen. So if you have a study area, it’ll be easier to start studying and staying focused.
study in a specific room like an office or school library if you can
if you have to study in your bedroom use a specific object you only use for studying: a lamp/desk. Make it a no-distraction, away from your bed, blank walls area.
The more active the learning, the better
80% active learning 20% passive
ask yourself: is it a concept or a fact?
learning a concept: understand/grasp/know it
put it into your own words
really think about the meaning of it
relate it with something you already know
teach somebody else. Recapitulate what you’ve learned. Talk out loud even if you don’t have anyone to teach - talk alone. Or at anyone that listens.
learning a fact: memorize it
use mnemonics
Acronyms (e.g. colours of the rainbow RoyGBiv – red orange yellow green blue indigo violet)
Coined sayings - anything popular or sayings you’ve heard since you were a child.
Interacting images – work even better if they’re weird. Creative associations make you never forget specific details. (e.g. 1 gram of fat has 9 calories: picture a fat cat – each cat has 9 lives)
any time 2 things are highly similar but not the same you will get maximal interference!! USE mnemonics!! (e.g. afferent vs efferent neurons: SAME - Sensory Afferent Motor Efferent)
Be a part of study groups
others can help you in ways you never thought before
Recognizing VS remembering
never confuse the two
while reviewing a chapter you may recognize concepts but not actually know them
and when you get to the test you won’t be able to remember any of it
so quiz yourself without looking at it
or stop in a page of your notes/textbook and ask yourself what is the concept immediately after and before it
Get your REM Sleep
get ~8 hours so you don’t undo your studying
this is how your brain stores permanent memories
without it you’re ability to remember seriously decreases
most people don’t even begin to take the advice but it’s simple: sleep better. Do better.
There’s 162 hours in a week. There is time.
reflect on what you are doing with your time and what activities you have to prioritize to succed as a student
Taking notes is vital.
right after the class take 5 minutes to expand everything you’ve jotted down, give it depth.
NOT hours later. You won’t remember half the things you wrote down.
Ask your questions to class mates and teachers.
teachers want you to succeed and it’s more than ok to ask your question in the teacher’s office or in the next class
How to use a textbook: SQ3R technique
Survey Question Read Recite Review
Survey: skim through the entire chapter in a couple of minutes.
Raise questions: e.g. what is osmosis? What is this graphic about? What is a prototype?
it causes you to look for answers and you’ll find the information better once you actually study it after. If you intend to find something you learn it better.
Start studying for tests early.
don’t undo yourself. You should only be reviewing the days before the test. don’t leave it till the last minute!
(don’t just scroll through this!!!! really think about these methods and how you can actually implement them so you can benefit from them!!! these actually work but only if you put them into practice boo good luck!)
Today I finished what was my cr, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Walter Benjamin.

i’m taking it easy today. sometimes you just need a day to chill, to sip on a warm mug of tea, review old screenwriting notes, and let your body rest. i’m just taking today one minute at a time. thank goodness it’s friday ♡
my november in photos / always the beautiful answer who asks a more beautiful question. – e.e. cummings
What to do when you’re having a poor executive function day/been sitting in front of your computer for a few hours wondering why you can’t do your work:
1. Take a deep breath - Let out all that anxiety over the project you’re doing so you can think clearly
2. Pull up a clean sheet of paper and something to write with - You can use a fresh word doc, new page in your journal or planner or whatever else works for you, the idea is that after this you will have a physical list to look at to help keep you on task.
3. Identify your obstacles (i.e. What is keeping you from doing this task?) - For example: Is it scary? If so, why? Does it feel too hard? Is there something else that you feel needs to be done first? Write these down!
4. Plan how to overcome your obstacles - This can take some creativity and some thinking to best figure out how to overcome the obstacle. I’ve included examples below for potential plans.
Example 1:
Obstacle: I don’t know the best way to approach this task.
Plan: Brainstorm on paper ways that you might be able to approach this task. Google ways to accomplish this task. Review lecture notes or example homework problems on how to accomplish this task. Ask a friend/coworker/classmate how they might start the task. Write down everything you feel might be relevant until you feel like you know where to start and where to go.
Example 2:
Obstacle: This feels too big and overwhelming so I don’t want to do it.
Plan: Break down the tasks into smaller, tiny tasks. Make them as small as you need to make them feel manageable. Write down all these tasks check them off as you go.
Example 3:
Obstacle: I’m waiting for someone to get back to me with comments on this project but they’re taking too long.
Plan: Follow up with this person and identify what you can do without their comments. For example, if you’re waiting for someone to sent you a section of a project or paper, write your section to the best of your ability. Can you have someone else review this project and still get good feedback. Or tell yourself you’ll revise/edit your project and integrate their comments later when you get to them. Often when I identify what feels out of order, I can move past it or put it farther down my list so I’m no longer just stuck waiting.
5. Encourage yourself and commend yourself for filling in the gaps actively that your brain couldn’t do on it’s own today. - You’re doing a great job!
Sincerely,
A Graduate Student with Adult ADHD
