This is one of those things I love about Moffat as a writer; If he gets a better idea at some point, heâs not afraid to correct himself/ will make use of it instead of hamfistedly sticking to his original plan.Â
Many people have said that, for example, there shouldâve been more foreshadowing for the âMelsâ thing in series 5 somewhere, but IMHO it was too cool an idea not to use just because it occurred to you somewhat later, the street urchin/ juvenile delinquent tracking down her parents and getting her first taste of anything resembling stability just by being their best friend/ crazy older sister figure, especially given the spin it adds to how River and Amy were instant BFFs, a schoolgirl who is atually a 40 year old assasin and your daughter from the future, thatâs too cool an idea for them not to use it just because it didnât occur to them before they actually started working on s6.
Same thing here: The whole plot with the fallout and reconcilliation made an excellent third act twist for s8, led to great character moments and some emotional and challenging scenes that had the audience discussing and thinking about the events and the dynamics between the two, and at the end you got the idea that they really understood each other better. It became the point where the mutual understanding really surpassed what we had in s7 and laid the basis for Claraâs shift toward being a more pragmatic person in the next episodes.Â
It was hot, too, which is besides the point, but was certainly a nice bonus. Â
Whouffle remains one of the most explicitly hot pairs to come out of this show; Like, Rose was all cute and romantic, Â River was a very overt flirt and got lots of outright lustful kisses, but in the end flirtyness is just al thing she does to playfully radiate confidence, Â in its innermost substance, River/Eleven was more about that robust, unspectacular caring that youâd find in a longtime wife, the type of âfamily affection in the face of adversityâ that the pond era was generally about, in different types and variations.
But with Clara, thereâs something going all the way from the surface of the characters to their dark dephts, like the chain of an anchor, thatâs just charged, passionately devoted bordering on obsession, although neither of them is that suited to expressing it. In s7, that manifested with them being a very physical, constantly-attched-to-each-other type of couple, in s8, they turned that on its head and somehow made it even hotter, all about the subtle gestures, longing glances and unspoken truths.  Same thing expressed differently, also somewhat matured through time and experience; Neither of them is quite in the same place they started from in âBells of Saint Johnâ, but theyâve taken that journey together instead of growing apart, and thatâs an awesome and precious thing.Â
