During his short life, Giuseppe De Nittis was a successful painter in both the Academic (Salon) and Impressionist styles. In 1878, Degas invited him to exhibit alongside the French Impressionists, though he was never formally affiliated with them. Following his untimely death from a stroke, his wife donated his works to his hometown of Barletta, Italy, where they are now on display in the Pinacoteca De Nittis.
