Hey everyone. As you’ve all most likely noticed, the hp rp community is a bit torn right now by a poll that @asktheboywholived put out, asking whether people are in favour of a potential article being written by an enthusiastic Buzzfeed reporter about the work of several of our creators. The intention of the reporter was to promote and praise the innovations and creativity of individuals in this community.

There is a lot of support and excitement for this potential article, but there is also a lot of dissent.

Regarding this dissent, what I’m seeing is a lot of genuine panic and fear about this community—which for many is a safe space—being blown wide open by an article like this. In particular, I have seen many people concerned about being outed to their families or cyberbullied by racists and homophobes flooding into the community as a result of the publicity.

These are all incredibly valid concerns, and are the reason that we wanted to hear what you had to say. It is because of these concerns that TT has told the reporter not to go ahead with the article; they did this BEFORE the final votes were in.

All of this said, I have also seen a number of people who are accusing TT and @sirussly​ of using this potential Buzzfeed article to promote themselves, without any concern for the wellbeing of this community and the people in it.

I am hoping that I can clarify a few things, since I have been aware of this developing situation since TT first got the offer:

TT was approached by the Buzzfeed reporter about showcasing THEIR work, which would have benefited THEIR career.

Rather than go ahead with it right away (as many would have done), TT first consulted Jess, and listened to the concerns that Jess raised about the possible negative repercussions of the article.

Understanding how broadly the article might affect the community, TT and Jess decided to bring the issue to ten other creators involved in hp rp (myself included), in order to gauge whether the reaction was overwhelming excitement or trepidation.

After some discussion, in which the we all expressed both excitement and concern, we decided that the question ought to be posed to the entire community.

Knowing full well that they and Jess would have to deal with overwhelming discourse, TT posted the poll that you’ve all seen circling around.

I would like to point out that TT could have taken a much easier route (e.g. say no to Buzzfeed without ever getting the community involved, or go ahead and say yes for their careers’ sake). Instead, they wanted to give all of you a chance to speak your piece, and to base their decision off of what you all had to say.

I would also like to reiterate: TT has told the reporter not to go ahead with this article, which could have boosted their career significantly. They did this FOR YOU. For the community, after hearing your concerns.

I have also seen some hate circulating about this post, which urges bloggers who are genuinely afraid for their safety to consider privatizing their blogs whether the article happens or not. Some are saying that Jess and TT are just trying to sway people toward “their side” with this post, and are being condescending in the process. As a person who actually knows Jess and TT and understands their intentions:

This post was meant only to address an issue that this poll had brought to light, and suggest a course of action folks can take to keep themselves safe. Neither TT nor Jess look down on anyone in the community; their main concern is to keep everyone out of harm’s way. They do not want anyone’s participation in this community to put them in a dangerous situation, regardless of the proposed Buzzfeed article.

If my testimony to their character isn’t enough, TT said in that same post that “this is not me attempting to sway the decision, because regardless of my own opinion I intend to go with the majority on this, and if the majority is for it, I will only move forward if it is an overwhelming majority”. These words have been backed by TT’s move to cancel the article after the poll revealed a nearly 50/50 split.

Jess has since responded to an extremely inflammatory anonymous ask in which she is accused of being condescending and selfish with a calm and sincere apology.

I would have responded to that ask by telling them to shove it up their ass. Jess is as selfless a person as there is, and the thoughtless claim that she is out only for recognition is frankly ridiculous. It was never said that Jess would be part of the article; in fact, she has since expressed that she would not have been comfortable with it.

Both TT and Jess have said again and again that their priority is the wellbeing of the community, and the safety and mental health of those in it; any accusations otherwise are just shitty attempts to capitalize on the fear people are feeling in order to bring TT and Jess down.

And finally, I’d like to address the folks who decided to shout, passive-aggressively speculate, and spread misinformation and panic. This last message is not directed at those against the article who raised their concerns respectfully, only the ones who chose to speak hatefully to and about TT and Jess:

You need to remember that as much as this is a safe space for you, it should also be a safe space for them. Just because they are seen as leaders in this community does not make them impervious to hate, and it does not give you the right to treat them like shit, regardless of how you feel about them. These are two human beings—two of the best, in fact—and they are both going to bed tonight feeling hurt and betrayed by people from the community that they have poured their souls into, and which they have only ever tried to uplift.

Step away from your browser. Make a cup of tea. Take a bath. Breathe. And please think carefully before you decide to perpetuate any harmful accusations about TT and Jess.
