James has been staring at the ceiling in complete silence since Regulus pulled out. It’s starting to make him nervous.

Maybe James doesn’t like bottoming. He certainly came hard enough—blacked out for a few moments, it seemed—but maybe the impersonality of the strap didn’t sit well with him.

Maybe it was the role reversal, him clinging desperately and sobbing into Regulus’s throat as he was taken apart for the first time.

Maybe it was—

“Reg?”

Regulus snaps to look. “Yeah? Hi. Yes. You alright?”

“Yeah,” James breathes. He licks his lips and swallows. “Yeah. I was just… well, I was just wondering if… if we could maybe do it like that all the time?” 

Regulus would do it again right now if he thought James could survive it.

“Let me guess,” Regulus deadpans, looking at the report, “your mother told you to ‘stand your ground.’”

Harry doesn’t answer.

From the doorway, and completely unrepentant, Lily says, “Actually, I told him if anyone gives his sister any lip, he’s to give it straight back. I stand by that.”

Regulus sighs. He glances up at his son. The raw red of his knuckles that will bruise by tomorrow. The little cut above his brow and his green eyes, so much like his mother’s, still aflame with fury.

He certainly gave the other boy more than just lip. 

“Right. Have you got anything to say for yourself?”

Harry’s mouth twists, and Regulus knows what he’s going to say before he says it. 

“They called Cassie a bastard, Papa.” 

His voice is unsteady. Hurt.

“I know,” Regulus says, because he does. He’s heard it a thousand times over. “But you cannot solve all your problems with violence, Harry.”

“But—!”

“What’s he meant to do, Reg? Let some yellow-bellied little shit say whatever he likes about Cassiopeia when she’s—”

“Cassiopeia does not need him starting fights on her behalf,” Regulus snaps. 

Lily scoffs. “Finished it, more like,” she says under her breath, but she folds her arms and doesn’t continue.

Regulus closes his eyes before turning to James, sat on the sofa and suspiciously quiet. “And you?” he prompts. “What do you think of all this?”

James’s gaze bounces from Regulus to Lily to Harry and settles there. He sighs like he hates what he's about to say.

“Your Papa’s right, Haz. You can’t go starting fights every time someone mouths off. Just—go on upstairs for a bit, yeah? Give us a chance to work out what happens next.”

“But Dad—!”

“Oh, James, come off it! You’ve done—”

Regulus rises. “I couldn’t agree more. Come along, Harry.”

Harry trudges after him, scowling. Lily pats his shoulder as they pass.
