tent (july 11) @jeggyverses-jegulus-microfic
jegulus | 712 words (Iâm so sorry idk what came over me)
The tent is smaller than Regulus remembers, though they are two instead of three. He blames Potter, far too broad to share a space with and currently attempting to see his own back in a conjured mirror. He keeps turning instead of conjuring another. Regulus needs him biblically.
Potter finally gives up with a sigh and drops the hem of his shirt. âI think you mightâve missed a spot, mate. Iâve got a nasty burn.â
âHave you?â Regulus asks, feigning surprise. Then, since heâs already gone mad and might as well enjoy it, âShow me.â
âWhâReally? I meanâyeah, âcourse, Iââ Potter practically rips his shirt off. âDâyou see it?â
Oh, yes. Regulus stifles his grin at the sight. One big, awful, angry-red spot in all that gold. He doesnât even thinkâjust lifts his arm and touches.
Potter hisses, flinching away.
Regulus rips his hand back. âSorry! Sorry, did I hurt you?â
Laughter answers him, but it isnât the sort Regulus likesânot when itâs aimed his way and followed by, âMâonly winding you up, Baby Black. You should see your face.â
Chest tight, Regulus turns without a word and climbs into bed. Heâs heard enough of that for a fucking lifetime. He gives his wand one vicious flick, and their little canvas prison plunges into darkness.
âGoodnight,â he says, clipped.
âAw, Reg. I was only trying to make you laugh.â
âWell donât,â Regulus snaps. âNot everything needs to be a bloody joke.â
Potter sighs; his bed does, too, as he settles in. âRight. Right, yeah. Never mind. I forget how different you and Sirius are, sometimes.â
He doesnât know why he says it. Only that it comes nasty and exhausted and a little hurt: âSorry to disappoint, Potter, but Iâm not a replacement for my brother. Just because you canât have him doesnât entitle you to the next best thing.â
After a long while, and with an uncertainty Regulus hadnât thought him capable of, Potter says, âI donât want Sirius, Reg. I want you.â
Right. Okay. Maybe the tent is on a hill. Is that why the whole thing feels as if itâs slipping sideways? If heâs really lucky, theyâll simply slide right off the cliff and into the sea.
Regulus realizes he hasnât answered. âOh,â he says, which is still not an answer.
Potter makes a soft noise of panic. âWhat do you mean, oh? Is that a good oh or a bad one?â
âItâs just an oh!â Regulus snaps, winded. Each breath makes him dizzier than the last. All he can smell is the ocean and James fucking Potter. âI donât know, James! Let me think.â
âFuckâs sake, Regulus, I just told you I fancy youââ Potter sits upright with a faint rustle of his blankets. âDid you call me James?â
âFancy me? What are we, schoolchildren?â
âWhat are we,â Potter echoes, closer than before. âYeah. Something Iâd like to know myself, actually.â
Regulusâs mouth dries right up. The distance between them shrinks; he can hear Potter moving in the dark, feel him settle on the edge of the bed.
âWhat are you doing?â he tries to demand, but it comes out in a whisper.
Thereâs a pause. Then, softly, Potter says, âIf itâs alright with you, Reg, Iâd quite like to kiss you.â
The heat of him bleeds through the blanket as he leans down; the scent of him is salt-musked and hot.
Regulus stops him with a hand to his chest. Merlin, heâs still shirtless. But want is not enough for Regulus to give in. Not yet.
âDo you mean it?â He swallows. âYou like me?â
âReggie, IâŚâ Potter huffs a laugh. The sound is shy and almost nervous. âLike, an embarrassing amount. I donât think I was subtle about it.â
He wasnât. He really, really wasnât.
âAlright,â Regulus says. âAlright. Yes. Kiss me.â
Potter makes a stunned, excited noise. âHoly shit. Dâyou mean that?â
âDonât make me repeat myself. Get on with it, Potter.â
âJames.â The ask isnât one at all, and so very close. âCall me James again.â
Regulusâs breath catches. âJames,â he amends. âJames. You can kiss me now.â
âDonât have to tell me twice.â
âI already have, you idiot,â Regulus says, curling a hand around the back of Jamesâs neck and meeting his mouth halfway.
