So damn beautiful
What do you write when you don’t know what to write about?
That’s the question I’ve been screaming to the heavens for the last year or so. It’s like I expect some sort of divine inspiration to come along and compel me to furiously type away at something, like, totally genius.
I need to let go of that notion. (I’m typing out that obvious point as a reminder to my sluggish brain. They say if you *truly* want to remember something, you must write it down.)
So, what now? I’m clearly a much more enlightened individual than I was a few sentences ago. I realize that no one is going to hand me some glorious, incandescent nugget to spin a tale around. Let’s go back to the basics.
They say write what you know.
I’m twenty-two years old, and I know very, VERY little about a lot of things. There is likely not one topic I could write a great deal about, but there are a million micro-topics I could write perhaps a fragment or - if I’m lucky - a sentence about.
Perhaps if I start with these small pieces - the things I think I know - they will take me someplace else. (Although, as an enlightened person, I know not to make assumptions.)
1. Parents are highly fallible human beings. This makes sense as most of us can barely make sure our own shit is straight, while parents are in charge of not only their own shit, but also other people’s shit.
2. Everyone should invest in decorative baskets, because they hide (and beautify) microcosms of mess and clutter.
3. Twenty-two year olds shouldn’t be allowed platforms such as this to spew garbage. Unless you’re, like, Tavi Gevinson or something.
We don’t exactly know when Anne Frank died but today, on the 12th of March, we remember her death.
Rest in peace, Anne Frank.

Sometimes you’re 23 and standing in the kitchen of your house making breakfast and brewing coffee and listening to music that for some reason is really getting to your heart. You’re just standing there thinking about going to work and picking up your dry cleaning. And also more exciting things like books you’re reading and trips you plan on taking and relationships that are springing into existence. Or fading from your memory, which is far less exciting. And suddenly you just don’t feel at home in your skin or in your house and you just want home but ‘Mom’s’ probably wouldn’t feel like home anymore either. There used to be the comfort of a number in your phone and ears that listened everyday and arms that were never for anyone else. But just to calm you down when you started feeling trapped in a five-minute period where nostalgia is too much and thoughts of this person you are feel foreign. When you realize that you’ll never be this young again but this is the first time you’ve ever been this old. When you can’t remember how you got from sixteen to here and all the same feel like sixteen is just as much of a stranger to you now. The song is over. The coffee’s done. You’re going to breathe in and out. You’re going to be fine in about five minutes.

Listen, I completely understand why everyone is furious with me. You don’t think that I know there are disgusting, reprehensible, dangerous things coming out of my mouth at all times? That my vile, indefensible words seek only to shelter the nation’s newly installed administration from the slightest shred of accountability? And that I’ve done it all with a self-righteous arrogance that suggests outright contempt for the truth and our nation’s founding principles? Of course I do. I have behaved in ways that defy not only logic and common sense, but also basic human decency. And, deservedly, I have been shamed and criticized and insulted for these actions.
But answer me truthfully: Who among you wouldn’t do the same exact thing if an evil 400-year-old witch had trapped your father’s eternal soul inside a cursed iron lantern, flickering faintly each time his agonized moans escaped the murky, otherworldly ether that is his prison?

Being in healthy relationships means choosing to invest your time in people who nourish your heart and mind. Commitment, then, is only healthy when what you’re committed to is committed to your well-being.

good reminder for the new year
already seen twice in theater. so. fucking. good. perhaps one of the best things about this movie is that none of the actors are particularly exceptional singers or dancers; however, they put their soul into every scene, and that makes it all rather amazing.
