Artemisia Gentileschi "Mary Magdalen" (c. 1620) / blade
In April 2026, a fragmented canvas by Artemisia Gentileschi was put on sale by Vienna’s Dorotheum auction house. One of several iterations completed by the Italian Baroque painter, this version of "St. Mary Magdalen" is notable for having had a large portion of the canvas cut away.
The canvas was uncovered in 2011 after years spent rolled up in the cellar of a private collector in Germany; through infrared examinations of the work's pigments and evolution, it was confirmed to be an autograph replica of Gentileschi's best-known version of the piece, which hangs in the collection of the Palatine Gallery in Palazzo Pitti, Florence. However, in this case, the head of the work's subject had been cut out of the canvas under circumstances that remain unclear, although Dorotheum suggests it was probably linked to "the chaos and looting of postwar Berlin."
In describing the piece, the auction house argues that its impaired state should ultimately be seen as a virtue: "The fact that this painting is damaged should not diminish its significance within the artist's oeuvre. It is highly unusual for a work of art of this importance to come to auction with the central feature, in this case the head of the saint, summarily removed. More often it is the fragment itself which has been removed from a larger, damaged work which appears on the market. In the absence of the missing part of this painting, it could be argued that the very loss it has suffered imbues the painting with a dramatic sense of intensity, evoking a visceral response almost akin to the reaction experienced with certain contemporary works of art."
