Writers have two modes and they are "i haven't written in three weeks and i am rotting from the inside and everything feels wrong and i don't know who i am anymore" and "i wrote for four hours straight and forgot to eat and it's dark outside and when did that happen and i feel like a god" and there is nothing in between. no chill. no medium setting. just famine or feast and a very confused nervous system.
Hello. I need to talk about MLA0 or else I will explode...specifically my thoughts about HABIT's monologue in GOODBYE. This will be long.
Here are the points HABIT has made:
--HABIT has known Patrick for a long time they go “way back”
--Micheal is the “I'm scared, I can't sleep, I'm the victim” character, that is apparently wrong. Michael isn't real, rather a persona Patrick is playing.
-- Patrick knows a lot more about Slenderman than he leads on. (EX: its movements, what it likes, how to please it, and how to distract it)
--knows where the hands are but is too scared to get them
--Favorite tactic to keep Slenderman away/surviving is "human shield." “He surrounds himself with food. He surrounds himself with family and friends.”
--He doesn't care about Shaun, never has. Shaun is just his “meat wall.”
--“I’d call him a sociopath, but only humans can be those and I don't think he really applies!" Patrick isn't human.
--Patrick was going to use Shaun as protection when Slenderman eventually caught up to him.
--Implies Patrick got rid of Eric because he was talking sense into Shaun.
--Patrick fed Stormy to Slenderman because it was “his time.”
--Every awful thing that has happened to Shaun is because of Patrick, and it was done on purpose because Patrick wanted someone else to “take the bullets” for him.
Am I the only one who has a problem with this monologue? It doesn’t make sense. I wanna point out some flaws.
When “Patrick” is in control he’s usually gone for months at a time ("Too Quiet," "So It Goes (Part 1/2)"). His first debut video is literally titled “Going Away Present” and in the next, he urges Shaun to find him. And according to Shaun from "So It Goes (Part 1/2)" everything is normal when he’s away.
But most importantly, I think the most contrasting evidence is in the other MLA0 crossover with EMH in [TOWER ON THE LAKE] on the fiftieth file of the Princeton Tapes. I’m going to assume this call is from Patrick (not sure if it’s confirmed). Patrick states that anyone you interact with can be dragged into this situation and that by doing so spreads “their” (most likely Slenderman and the Rake) influence making them stronger.
“See, my whole fuckin’ thing is; I know they get stronger, the more that we spread the knowledge of their existence, it's- a fucking virus loop, man, it feeds them. It’s more toys in their fuckin’ toybox. Every soul you touch, every friend, family member, lover, and stranger that you interact with, willing or not, you roped them fucking into this…” I don’t think Patrick likes “them” considering that call was an effort to “…try and push the wheel a little further.”
But either way, if Patrick is aware that bringing more people into this situation spreads “their” influence, why would he drag anyone else into this? I’d argue he does the opposite of what HABIT is describing on that point. He’s mostly out on his own and when there’s someone else who isn’t involved in this situation (Eric and Stormy) he tries to push them away.
Throughout the series, we see Patrick constantly trying to keep people away from Shaun. Why would he be doing that if he can use them to protect himself? It doesn't seem very efficient. The first example is Eric. In the beginning, it's mostly Michael trying to push him away because he’s viewing this scenario as a “family issue," so he feels it would be wrong for Eric to be involved. Then Michael is leading Eric to an alleyway, which he doesn't remember doing, as he tells Stormy in the video "Focus." I think this may have been Patrick’s doing, but through influence rather than full control similar to the events of "Sleepwalking," since Patrick does reference it in his last and successful attempt to keep Eric away. “You get attacked once, you get attacked twice, and you just won't leave. I think I’ve warned you enough fucking times.”
Next up is Stormy. Michael goes to stay with her which Patrick doesn’t seem to like. Since Michael has the "virus" that can attract Slenderman. Patrick takes over, threatening and scaring Stormy, trying to make sure that she doesn't interact with Michael again. Then, later on, when Stormy and Shaun both get in touch, Patrick holds them hostage and tells them to never contact each other again. But the two don’t listen and stay together. Stormy states in “A Warning”, she's been having dreams where Michael tells her that she's going to die. I think these dreams were perhaps Patrick trying to scare her off into leaving and cutting ties with Shaun for good.
I think it’s clear that Patrick doesn't like Eric. Eric has been getting in the way of what he needs Shaun to do, which is why he attacks and threatens him if he doesn't leave. But the thing is, Patrick doesn't kill him. He lets him go. Patrick had the perfect opportunity and probably has had even more beforehand to kill Eric but he doesn't. Sure, he doesn't let him off easy, but he's still alive, even by the end of the series. Sadly, the same thing doesn’t happen with Stormy, she doesn’t leave so she dies.
But, I don't think the meat-shield claim came from out of nowhere. I still don't think that they would just hand us the answers to the whole series, especially pulling that whole new idea from out of nowhere so it has to mean something else.
I don’t get the impression that Patrick would even need a “shield” to begin with. In multiple scenes beforehand, we would see Slenderman, and then shortly after Patrick would appear (Stormy, Clearing My Head, a few that come to mind). I don't think he really needs any sort of protection from it. When we finally discover one of the clock hands, we learn that it gives off the same radiation Slenderman does, and that it also repels it. Maybe Patrick has similar properties to the clock hands because of the scenes with the two, and how Patrick also always gives off a certain effect when he's on screen. Now, I don't think he is immune to Slenderman but it just feels weird that the two can appear in multiple scenes in close proximity with no sign of threats to either.
I think while Patrick himself may not need that much protection, maybe he used Stormy as a “shield” for Shaun as he would be more vulnerable. He could also use the “shield” as protection from Michael since he is his human host, so he obviously wouldn't want to lose him. (I think the two are bound together because it doesn't make sense that Patrick would be so insistent on keeping Michael alive if he could just possess anyone else). Because in the call, Patrick states that anyone you interact with can be dragged into this whole Slenderman situation. So, hypothetically Patrick could just use bystanders, he doesn't need to use family members or friends he could just use anyone, and it doesn't matter cuz it's just another body, more food.
Okay, but why keep those two away but not Shaun? Because Shaun has been involved in this just as long as Michael has. They both know of and have been in contact with The Clock, and according to Michael have both been chased by Slenderman. It doesn't seem right that Patrick would drag Shaun along for this long just to use him as a meat shield when he can literally use anyone else. Plus I don't think he's too fond of him since Shaun is hard to work with and Patrick seemingly has no problem hurting him.
My personal theory is that Michael and Shaun have a connection to The Clock and Patrick needs the two to do something with it. I think it might have to do with returning the hands to The Clock because, Michael at least, can find the clock hands he just doesn't know how. (Maybe Michael is used for finding the hands while Shaun is used for finding the Clock itself, which is why Patrick is so adamant about him remembering The Clock.)
But then, why would HABIT lie about this? What does he have to gain from it? He’s using Shaun as bait, though apparently knows where Michael/Patrick already are. Why even go through all this trouble if he could just get them himself? But also, if Michael/Patrick don't care about Shaun, why would they even go through the effort of retrieving him? It doesn't make sense.
I think with this whole monologue, our enemy is context. Maybe Patrick does these things behind the scenes, and we don't see it; or maybe this is just what HABIT has observed in him over the years he's apparently known him. But, I think it's also important to note that in the series Stan Frederick, Patrick has a cameo in "13. Unsatisfied Customers". What's important about this call is that Patrick questions HABIT’s mortality, and doesn’t even refer to him by name, maybe indicating that this "history" HABIT talks about is one-sided.
MLA0 is full of unreliable narrators, so I can't confidently count HABIT as the only one, just because he's been around a long time and, in this scenario, has no apparent reason to lie to Shaun. Though, HABIT could be lying to Shaun to upset him, or maybe HABIT doesn't actually know where Michael/Patrick are, and is hoping by shattering what little relationship the brothers have left, Shaun will rat him out. Those reasons may be possible and why so much of HABIT's claims aren't 100% accurate, making Patrick sound worse than he is so HABIT gets more information.
I don't think everything in this monologue is wrong or a lie, but most of it is. Patrick not being human makes sense because of how he talks, or literally any teleportation/ reality bending that fucker does that lines up. And I think Patrick definitely does know a lot about Slenderman, and how to distract him, which is where that "meat shield" claim comes from. But again, context matters. Patrick probably only uses it for other people he needs, such as a human hosts or tagalongs like Shaun.
As for the "take the bullets" claim, when has Shaun taken a hit for Patrick/Michael? Typically it's always Patrick who's in rough shape, not Shaun. Out of Michael, Patrick, Eric, and Stormy, Shaun takes the least amount of hits (besides his death, obviously. But I highly doubt that was a part of Patrick's plan.) Stormy fits this claim more, and I don't think she was supposed to. Again, Patrick wanted her away.
Now, for the claim HABIT makes about Michael not being real and just a persona Patrick is playing...why would he do that? If Patrick's goal is to "surround himself with food", wouldn't you play someone more desirable? Michael lashes out and is self destructive, and it's clear his family hates that about him; they don't even talk to him! (Do Michael's parents even know Shaun is dead?? probably not!) The point is, wouldn't it make sense for Patrick to play a "star student" if Michael is a persona. And I think the way he talks about Michael cements this, "Your brother's a bit of a weak-minded, drug addict, emo kid." why would Patrick make fun of himself/character he's playing? Why would Patrick harm himself, when it's clear he won't let Michael end it?? He even pokes fun of Michael's cutting habits in "Clearing My Head." And why would he be so insistent on Shaun calling him "Patrick"?
So no, I don't think Michael is a persona, rather his own person. Going off of that, about the claim that Michael or Patrick don't care about Shaun, that is also false. Michael cares about his brother, it is very obvious. Now, Patrick?
My own interpretation of Patrick is that I don't really think he cares about Michael or Shaun, at least not in the way he's supposed to. I believe he cares about them, but in the same way you would an object. He needs both Shaun and Michael alive, because he needs them for whatever his plan is. That's about the extent of it. It's clear he has no problem hurting Michael or Shaun for his own gain, he even seems to have fun with it at times. They're objects to him, pieces of his puzzle he doesn't want broken.
So, what about the clock hands? I believe Michael can find the clock hands (as we see him do in "BROTHERLY LOVE"). But Michael is obviously terrified to do so. And this ability is only something Michael is able to do, not Patrick. Otherwise, why wouldn't Patrick go get them himself? Because of that, HABIT may want to exploit Michael's abilities to use the clock hands for himself.
So why is HABIT lying, then? Either I am correct and he is trying to make Michael/Patrick sound bad so Shaun rats them out, or HABIT is actually wrong. Who knows how long this (possibly one-sided) history was between them? It could be centuries ago, meaning Patrick could have been the way HABIT describes, but that is no longer the case. Who knows!
These are just my thoughts :3 thank you for reading!!!
God, yes. This goes over shit I've been saying for genuinely years, and I find the points HABIT makes in this video to be such obvious lies or exaggerations. Especially with how Patrick pushed other people away from Shaun, instead of keeping them close to use them as a meat shield. I feel like i've said some variation of "If meat shield real, why chase off Eric and try to do the same to Stormy" enough times to be blue in the face.
To me it just reads like HABIT trying to tell Shaun whatever worst fears it could cook up to try to make Shaun break (it is torture, after all), not a reflection of reality. Yes, Michael and Patrick keep Shaun around, but... that's their sibling, and Shaun is involved in this shit just like Michael is. I feel like people took Shaun's denial of slenderman in the beginning of the series as "Oh, Shaun wasn't affected by it until Michael came back," but I think it was just... well. Denial. Growing up, Shaun saw it pretty clearly that acting "like Michael" (seeing things you shouldn't, for instance!) gets you cut off from society and harshly punished, and learned to shut it down and try to hide from the truth to prevent that from happening. If you see slenderman as allegorical for mental illness it especially makes sense!
I would personally claim Patrick does care about Michael and Shaun, I think he's just a very "ends-justify-the-means" type of guy. Would you rather hurt / scare your family member so they go down the right path, or watch them die because you didn't? Especially since we know he's seen both Shaun and Stormy die in numerous ways before, he might be trying to avoid that from happening again however he thinks that must be done. My main evidence for Patrick caring is that he tells Shaun they used to know each other as kids (and almost sounds kinda hurt when Shaun claims to not know who he is / keeps calling him "Michael"), the aforementioned "I've seen Stormy get hit by a bus, I've seen you bleeding from the ears, begging me to kill you..." line, his apology to Shaun and Stormy in "Patrick," the Princeton Tapes where Patrick says "I had a brother, too" (which means, notably, he sees Shaun as his family as well, not just Michael's), and Stan Frederick when Patrick says Shaun was cut into pieces and sounds notably distressed / upset during it. It's a cut scene, but the one with Patrick and HABIT in the bathroom is also pretty good evidence, since we know that's Patrick, not Michael ("thank you for giving me something to bury.")
I do also think Shaun does have some kind of deeper role than we know or get to find out, hence Patrick's insistence for Shaun to remember remember remember something. Patrick's plan obviously failed here, but it does seem like whatever it was involved Shaun somehow. I like the headcanon that Shaun is also dragged throughout iterations like how Michael and Patrick are, but that's not really textually supported. I find the idea that Patrick keeps trying to keep the other two on track, because he keeps his memories and the others don't (outside of dreams / visions, maybe?), but it always falls apart because of internal and external circumstances.
Also obligatory "Habit is a lying liar who lies" because people keep forgetting that. Since he already knew where Michael and Patrick were (this could also be a lie to further torment Shaun though, it seems Patrick went to HIM in the deleted scene, not the other way around), I do think it was just an exercise in breaking Shaun down mentally before the physical torture began.
Happy pride to taylocke (ig maybe tamylocke?) Everytime i render glitch effects i forget how i did anything ever and die so it never look the same.
I love the specific angst of "my beloved is haunted by something that takes her away from me and also prevents me from keeping photos of her" i eat that shit UP. YOU dont get to keep her!
