Hi! When it comes to prepositions and other “service” words, it is very hard to define their specific meaning and usage rules.  This is true for any language, I guess. I hate to say that to my students, but it’ll come to you with practice. 

в - generally means in, into, a movement inside something. That something could be a period of time: в понедельник, в сентябре etc.

на - on; the difference between в and на is similar (but not identical) to “in” and “on”. 

под - means under. 

к - to, approaching a subject. К дому - towards the house; к обеду - towards the lunch time. 

Probably, these pictures could help:

The superscript denotes the order of the partial derivative. ∇^2, or the “vector containing the second partials”, is also written as ∆. It’s important to note that technically,
