I can't speak for everyone,but embracing and owning your multiracial background is in no way about your facial features or being able to claim as many ethnic groups as possible. I'm not really sure why this has become an actual thing for some people, but it's really demeaning. At the end of the day you have the right to call yourself whatever,but you probably had help. You might have had the influence of the people promoting the "mixed baby" fetish. Or the people that insist that you must be mixed because you're attractive. Just know your baby will be cute regardless if their of dual heritage or not, and no race is responsible for your attractiveness you just take care of your self and keep yourself up. It is true that technically everyone is mixed somewhere down the line; that's just what comes along with being human. The difference is recency, our relatives around us who are a different ethnic background that help us form an identity. Please allow the underrepresented to celebrate themselves. It's always the same pattern. Statement made: Dark skin is beautiful and someone just has to dismiss it with "All shades are beautiful" knowing damn well other shades never had an issue with being seen as attractive. Blacklivesmatter.... and you know what happened with that. Now we're celebrating multiracial/ biracial people and now "everyone is mixed." The father of 3yr old Zephyr provides us with a glimpse of what parenthood is like as he is a white man born in Manhattan with a biracial(white/black ghanaian) son. He talks about ability to share many experiences that go along with being human no matter the color such as being angry when your parents tell you no more tv and go to bed, missing your grandmother and feeling left out on the playground. He mentions those examples because in all of those situations the father can guide him and help him cope using his own personal memories , or simply put he’s been in his shoes. But the writer also expresses that there are some experiences that he and his beloved Zephyr will not share. Writer states (regarding to the talk black parents give their sons) “ I was shocked and saddened that anyone needed to hear this warning. This is not a lecture I ever received from my father. There was never a need It was always assumed that if I ever came into contact with police, both parties would act respectfully and appropriately. My parents weren’t worried about discrimination. Loving parents want the best for their children but understand that everything is not under their control and they can not shield their children from all the negatives in life. Yet, of all the people your child will encounter one of the last you would expect to cause any harm physically or emotionally is a teacher. Teachers can be defined using many adjectives such as professional, or possessing cultural sensitivity. It doesn’t seem that 11 yr old Kaden Brown received any of the qualities from his teacher after he reported an incident , where he expresses that his teacher “looked at his curls and asked if he was a mutt?” Kaden’s parents since the incident did express their concern with the principal of the school, they were told that they would receive a phone call and the school is investigating. Its important to know that : - The offense is not about the fact that she asked about his race, ITS HOW she asked and the terms she decided to use, she could of easily used biracial/multiracial in substitute of “mutt” - Kaden reports that race wasn’t even a topic of disscusion at the time, he says they were just doing classwork (not sure what subject) Was the question even necessary or appropriate? One positive outcome of Kaden's situation is that he is sparking up some conversations and awareness about being mixed race in America. Kaden is a very smart and handsome boy with a bright future and I hope he and his family get a formal apology. FBI director, James B. Comey states “People of goodwill protesting, including here in San Diego because they believe theres an epidemic of police violence against black people. Of course however good their hearts, however well intended they may be Americans actually have no idea whether the number of black people, brown people, white people being shot is up,down or sideways over the last 3yrs,5yrs,10yrs. They have no idea whether black people or brown people are more likely to be shot during encounters then white people are.” - Yet Comey goes on to say…. “ There’s actually some recent research by a Harvard economist focused on 10 major departments that analyzed over 1,000 shootings by police that showed the surprising result that lethal force was more likely to be used against white people, while non-lethal force was more likely to be used against black people.” - So even though theres “ no real research, he just thought the last statement would be a nice touch on his speech. I do agree that police do in fact risk their lives usually trying to protect and serve, there are good cops and bad cops. Comey doesn’t want those videos and images to be the visual or idea of law enforcement in America. Almost as much the black community does not want the media criminalizing every black victim of police brutality with details of past school suspensions and traffic tickets. There are two sides to a story and both express their concerned for their lives. - I do ask, should we really be focused on quantity and not the surrounding circumstances? Lets say Philando Castile was the only incident this yr. Well until someone can do some accurate number crunching, I suppose Comey wants the American people to perceive these videos as unfortunate coincidences.
