When the game was release worldwide, we already have a big number of underwhelming cards and effects. High level creatures with poor stats to invest on, as well effects with more negatives than positives, limited the player’s options to a few number of staple cards. This might be in part because the game debuted in Japan with a different set of rules, making various underwhelming cards much more efficient than when we obtained them. For better or worse years has passed and the game evolved in many different ways, allowing some of these underdog cards have a second opportunity in casual and even competitive play, yet others becoming just a joke to be played seriously.

“Sparks” gained an infamous popularity among veteran players  as one of the weakest effects in the entire game. When used the opponent will take 200 damage, an extremely weak effect to be taken seriously in any aspect. Not only that, but on its debut we already had more effective Burn effects such as “Hinotama” and “Tremendous Fire” to work with, and nowadays with the many options to deal damage to the opponent leaves “Sparks” even in a worst position to the point of becoming a joke card to try to achieve wins with.

In all honestly, working to make “Sparks” effective is a hard task due its low damage input, and will cause it to rely a lot on other cards to truly become of any use. Effects like “Rapid-Fire Magician” and “Dark Eradicator Warlock” will increase the damage done when activating this card, yet same can be said by using Spells like “Tremendous Fire” and “Meteor of Destruction”. Instead of being used to deal damage might become a resource to discard and activate effects like “Chiron the Mage” or “Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell”, but for those circumstances a card like “Ojamagic” will offer more advantages to meet their requeriments. The only true use “Sparks” can have during a Duel is curiously as a finisher, chipping away the remaining Life Points from our opponent. But outside that possibility, a lot of Spell Cards and Burn effects already cover better on its role.

“Sparks” can be said is the worst card in the whole game, even compared with hard to summon monsters and effects requiring heavy costs and conditions. We’re wasting a card to deal insignificant damage with, and unless is to mock the opponent by defeating them any other card can do its job much better. When compared to other cards on its debut many gained a second chance with recent additions to the card game, including “Skull Servant” going from one of the worst monsters to a proper Zombie archetype of its own. Unless you wanna win in a fancy way with “Sparks”, is an extremely poor Spell Card to depend  under normal circumstances even in casual play.

+ Deals damage to the opponent + A funny way to win Duels with

your friends, your family, the people you love — they’re flat-out not gonna care if you take a shower instead of cutting yourself, or if you get in all your meals for a day, or if you curb your spending significantly, or if you go for a walk instead of locking yourself away and crying.

to us, these are major accomplishments. they’re fucking cake-worthy victories deserving of celebration.

to everyone else, it’s just behaving kind of “normal”, and will always be compared to your other problematic behaviors — “why are you still behaving so histrionically when it comes to sex?” “why are you still so irrationally afraid of abandonment?” “why do you still get so angry?”

the fact of the matter is, they won’t be happy until you’re cured.

but don’t let that discourage you.

if you think you’ve done well, feel good about it. treat yourself. call your therapist and celebrate with them on the phone, if you have the option.
