It's the last day of 2016 and as the new year approaches all I can say is that I could not be happier to see the back of 2016 and welcome 2017 with great hope. For so many people this has been a terrible year, an annus horribilis. We had so many people die in the name of war, to terrorists attacks, to natural disasters, to needless deaths that highlighted mental illnesses and the ever-present bullying and killings due to homophobia; and of course the deaths of celebrities that gave us an escapism from this cruel world by doing what they do to bring us joy and happiness. Talented folks who were real people facing their own fate. All of these events have touched each and everyone of us on a personal level for whatever reason and we suffered collectively as citizens of the world. On a more personal level in a space of eight weeks I and my family suffered the loss of an uncle, a cousin, and his father not four weeks after burying his son (my mother's brother) and just when we thought the heartache was over my children and I lose a man that used to be my husband and their father. A day and half later my mother is diagnosed with an inoperable malignant cholangiocarcinoma. These have been my final moments of 2016 and look forward to 2017 with optimism and expectations that this will be the year that we stop losing 3-4 family members like we have every single year over the last 10 years. To 2016....you can f&ck off now and give 2017 a chance to bring us joy and happiness. To the world, in the words of The Beatles...let's give peace a chance! Didn't realise that I had stopped doing this a long time ago, and am happy to say that one of the greatest journeys I took over the past 2 years is rediscovering myself and acknowledging my self worth! You simply have to walk away from situations and people that aren't conducive to your life. People and situations that only bring you bad energy. That is one of the most courageous, albeit painful, gifts you can give yourself. Sometimes these are the hardest lessons you can learn but know it will give you strength. I learned the hard way that some people will only love you for as long as you serve them a purpose. They take advantage of your all-too-forgiving nature, your generosity, your loyalty, your trust in them and every good virtue and value you hold dear. I no longer make room nor tolerate people like this. I know my worth simply because I fell in love with myself first! Don't ever let somebody steal your sparkle!!! At the end of the day, the stories they tell about you only defines them and ironically says more about them than you!
