he isn’t wrong. somewhere along the way, searching for him in crowded rooms had become second nature, her eyes instinctively gravitating toward the corners where he concealed himself from the world. “ i couldn’t very well leave you up here to brood all evening. ” his remark about men of god causes her smile to falter, if only for a moment. there was a time she might have defended them without hesitation. “ humans are imperfect, ” she says quietly, gaze settling beyond the window. “ sometimes.. they forget to practice the very mercy they ask of everyone else. ” she leaves it there, vague but slightly loaded. there are truths about her father she carries that cannot survive the sound of her own voice. following the direction of his gaze, she finds his mother below, radiant from a distance, yet she immediately recognizes the unmistakable melancholy in the way elio speaks of her. not the smile itself, but its rarity. “ people become very good at smiling when everyone is watching. ” the observation carries the peculiar weight of two children who learned to read their mothers long before they learned to understand them. it occurs to her then that elio notices far more than he allows anyone to believe. beneath all his cynicism exists the same quiet vigilance she has carried for years. his next remark earns a soft laugh. “ you’re trying very hard to corrupt me. ” looks at the champagne bottle extended into the space between them, then at him. every lesson from childhood urges refusal. good girls decline. good daughters know better. yet he waits without expectation nor persuasion. the choice is hers. she accepts the bottle with careful hands, before she takes one tentative sip. instant regret. her face scrunches almost immediately before she coughs into her sleeve, hastily returning the bottle as laughter escapes despite herself. “ that is absolutely dreadful. ”

he's glad she found him, even though he knows he should keep his distance. still can't quite bring himself to do so, despite knowing his presence in others lives only brings chaos in the end. " my saviour, " he teases, though often he wonders if she just might be. " you're so polite. " she speaks so eloquently, while he sits there in his bitterness, wanting to rip them all to shreds with his words. " but that's not true. some people are perfect. " well, one, in his eyes, and she's sitting right across from him as he speaks. at her observation of his mother, he hums. once upon a time, he had felt immense sorrow for her, tried his best to be the son she always wanted. but it was never enough. no amount of trying would ever make her love him. tearing his gaze away from the window, he focuses solely on grace. longs to tell her what his parents are really like, but he doesn't. keeps it in still. protecting them despite the fact they've never protected him. " are you capable of being corrupted, grace ? " he questions, voice low with a desire far softer than he's ever known. watches with a curious gaze as she takes the bottle, has a sip. laughter spills from his mouth a second later, reaction warming the hardened heart within his chest. in elio's world, grace is the sun. every moment without her is overcast. " you get used to it. " almost-empty bottle is set aside. " and it always tastes better off someone else's lips. " his gaze flickers, ever so briefly to her mouth, and he leans forward. longs to diminish the space between them, but he behaves. instead only reaches out to wipe the corner of her mouth dry with the pad of his thumb, hand resting on her cheek. " are you okay ? i can get you some water. "

"no ," lies , "yesterday was bad ." truth . "today .. better ," because she had three lines instead of two . because she numbed herself from ever thinking about him again just to end up on the phone later . like he knew , like he felt it . maybe that was fate's way of telling her to slow it down , that there was something worth holding onto . and then the voices are back telling her a different story -- that if he cared enough , he would have stayed . but he didn't . he left her just like everyone else . and there was nothing she could do to change his mind . he saw her for who she was just like she knew he would . "so .. leaving again ," syllables are cut short , lesser pursed into a frown as a sigh gets caught in her throat , ignoring the other girls around her who cut up a line on the toilet seat . has to stop herself from dropping to her knees and getting a taste . she knows she shouldn't go . it'd only make things worse . seeing him and knowing he'll be taking the next flight out . she doesn't say anything for a while , only thing heard down the line is her uneven breathing before finally , she pushes off the wall and forces herself out of the stall . "m'kay ," because her body craved him , her heart called his name and no matter what she did and who she did it with , they wouldn't compare to the place she once called home . "'m coming ."

he wants to ask what made yesterday so bad, what's suddenly made it better. but he refrains. chooses to keep anymore questions for when she's standing in front of him. because no matter her answer, he plans on seeing her. " i told you i would be gone a while. " and at the rate business is growing, it could be longer than anticipated. another thing he chooses to hold off on sharing. thankfully, it goes his way. she agrees to come. hadn't quite noticed how tense he was until the wave of relief washes over him. it's been months and nothing compares, now feeling comes close. nothing feeds him quite like her. " where are you ? i'll send a driver. " and he'll be waiting at the bottom of the stairs, more eager than he's been for anything in his life. fighting every urge to ask for more, when he knows he shouldn't. things between them seem fated to end in disaster, and yet he can't bring himself to want steady with anyone else.

steely blues are glancing out of the window, refusing to look at him as she shifts uncomfortably in her seat. the damp, chilly night air is still clinging to her clothes, and the heater running inside the car does little to thaw the icy knot of embarassment sitting in her stomach. "you don't have to say it, your silence is doing plenty of talking for you," the blonde mumbles under her breath, pulling her knees closer to her chest, tugging the oversized sleeves of her sweater down over her knuckles. "i just .. i thought it would be different this time."

he doesn't mean to come across harshly. he cares, a lot, and that means anytime she's hurt, he feels an anger that's unshakable. hates that he can't fix the problem, because that's who he is, who he's always been. the one that fixes things. the eldest child of five, he's never know another way. and that extends past his siblings. stealing a glance, his features soften, sigh filling the quiet of the car. " it's never different, daisy. not with people like that. " he reaches out his free hand, cups it over hers for a moment, squeezing gently. " it'll be okay, alright ? i promise. "

a lazy smirk tugs at the corner of his lips as he stretches his long legs out across the sofa, making himself even more at home just to get under her skin. doesn't even look up from his phone at first, letting her exasperated words settle in the air between them before warm hues glance up from the device. "and miss out on all this quality time with my favorite person?" he questions, tone dripping with sarcasm as he sets the phone down on his chest, locking palms behind his head as he offers her an unbothered grin. "brooke said i could wait for her, so i'm you know, waiting."

everything about him irritates her, and she can't quite figure out why. he just pushes her buttons like he was made for that alone. watching him sprawl out like he owns the place causes her eyes to roll. " lucky me, " she chimes back, sarcastic smile erasing frown lines temporarily. " okay . . . and what's wrong with waiting in her room ? " she questions as arms fold across her chest. " i didn't even know you were here. i could have been doing something private, you know, since it's my home. "
