How to call your reps when you have social anxiety
When you struggle with your mental health on a daily basis, it can be hard to take action on the things that matter most to you. The mental barriers anxiety creates often appear insurmountable. But sometimes, when you really need to, you can break those barriers down. This week, with encouragement from some great people on the internet, I pushed against my anxiety and made some calls to members of our government. Hereâs a comic about how you can do that, too. (Resources and transcript below.)
Motivational resources: There are a lot! Here are a few I really like:
Emily Ellsworth explains why calling is the most effective way to reach your congressperson.
Sharon Wong posted a great series of tweets that helped me manage my phone anxiety and make some calls.
Kelsey is tweeting pretty much daily with advice and reminders about calling representatives. I found this tweet an especially great reminder that calls arenât nearly as big a deal as anxiety makes them out to be.
Informational resources: There are a lot of these, as well! These three are good places to start:
Find your representative at house.gov
Find your senators at senate.gov
Use the âWeâre His Problem Nowâ scripts when calling (or write your own!)

Evolution Vs Adaptation
Has anyone ever looked these 2 items up and found a bevy of convoluted answers? It seems that no one can clearly define the difference, or what is more disturbing is that perhaps, they donât think there is a difference. It seems to me that what Darwin discovered was adaptations and that somehow was extrapolated into believing that we all evolved from single cell organism with a lose explanation of where these single cell organisms came from. So Iâm asking someone to please explain evolution. Does anyone really think that humans are a result of billions of years of changes from single cell creatures? Why would humans be considered an evolutionary step in this world of hostile environments?
Here is what seems to make it implausible to me simply on the level of adaptation and differentiation and Iâd like to know if there is anyone who can answer these specific questions. Iâve read that we probably share a common ancestor with the chimpanzee and Iâm guessing that no one knows what that common ancestor is or more precisely, we have not found ancient remains of this creature. Does this make sense when we think about what we say has happened? What would drive the divergence? What would make a species that is comparably hairless, with poorly developed senses (no eagle eye, dog like hearing or sense of smell) and physically weaker an adaptation or evolutionary selection?Â
From what I have read, we have lots of âearly humanâ remains but almost no ancient forms of chimpanzees or other primates. I guess this is because we are somewhat self obsessed? What makes an âearly humanâ an assumed ancestor? My understanding is that Neanderthals were once thought to be an ancestor and then they were found to have gone extinct however, later they decided that Neanderthals probably mated with other humanoid creatures and their DNA is in fact preserved in humans. Why would a creature like a human evolve from creatures that are clearly better equipped to handle nature and more likely to maintain the ecological balance on this planet. Why are we here?
Iâm not seeking a religious view point here. Simply looking for some logic behind what appears to me to be a series of illogical assumptions about the idea of human evolution. To me it seems that Darwin was a bit naive about nature and the world we live in if this is the conclusion he drew. Â Â
REPEAT AFTER ME: âMy current situation is not my final destinationâ

The way things are going, every kid is going to go to school wearing bubble wrap and a helmet. Back in the 1970s (and earlier), parents didn't stress about our health and safety as much as they do today. Itâs not that they cared less â they just didn't worry compulsively about it. Parents of 2014 need to be reminded of how less restricted, less supervised, less obsessively safety-conscious things were... and it was just fine...
