Jin Baiyin, he/him, 25

Okay basically he's a lone cultivator (if you don't know what that is it's kinda sword magic? Popular use in xianxia and wuxia but you can find them outside of it) in a costal port city.

He wasn't related to the previous Lord of the city but he managed to convince the man he WAS, became his bastard child, then disposed of his siblings to become the new Lord! JBY is a pretty shady guy, hence the snake motif, but attempts to display himself as a pretty face for the most part, especially when manipulating people. He's a gorgeous man, very eye catching and striking, which he uses to his advantage to get deals beneficial to him.

He used all of this to eventually get in contact with a proper cultivation sect in the north. Most of the non-magic people just assume the Northerners are barbarians when in reality they have high class magic, healing and fighting abilities. JBY cuts a deal with the mentally ill mother duke (previous duchess before her son took control) to bring her sickly daughter out of the sect and to the sea side to 'recover'.

In actuality JBY knows that she's one of the few people who's made a pack with a spirit beast. He has his own, a sea serpent, while hers is a snow lynx. JBY wants to learn how she did it without having proper cultivation, how she manages to survive in a climate that would kill a normal human.

The woman, Li Hua, is equally as curious as he is and they both end up testing and investigating each other. JBY very, very quickly hyperfixates on her, he's the type of quick attachments and loves someone that he can see as 'on his level'. People are usually below him and an asset, but Li Hua very clearly isn't and can hold her own.

He's NOT happy when she breaks off their engagement.

She ends up marrying the second prince of the empire between their lands. When JBY figures that out he decides that he's tired of letting things easily slip away and decides to become the imperial court's pain in the ass and fuck around with the tariffs, port use, ect ect. Very vindictive when things don't go his way. He's very fucked in the head because growing up his courtesan mother basically taught him people are just good for money,dirty work or information. He gets cocky with his strengths and while he doesn't have a quick temper once it boils over he doesn't easily back down.

So basically what’s happening is we’ve got Sylas, a ghost with severe emotional issues (anger issues, impostor syndrome, and depression) which causes him to lash out or lock himself inside his room in the hotel where he works (he used to be a performer who died (in the 1920s)in the theater next to the hotel). So that’s whats happening here. We’ve got the man of the hour, his buddies Tim and Ray (who are alive and well!!), Sylas’s door, and the hotel itself!!
