Thinking about my Rygos series that's going on and the coltland twins. I don't think I'll ever get to this stage of writing about them so I may as well since this backstory is in my head
Both of them ended up orphan with foster parents. An older couple who passed while they were like. Mid twenties.
How they got there is sadder thought
Their mother died soon after childbirth, some complication the doctors couldn't fix in time. She was the love of their father's life, and nothing could really end up riding that. Colt was like a miniature him, familiar, but Ryland? Ryland was all her. The twins may have looked the same but they had very different dispositions.
It was... Hard. To live with a child who acted like the mother he hadn't even technically met.
Ryland was very clingy from a young age, comfort objects, tended to want to stay around his dad more. He'd go out and adventure if colt took the lead, happy about it, but was rather mellowed out for a kid none the less.
Colt had been out at a sleepover in middle school the day their father died. Ryland was supposed to be there too, but something had felt wrong for no reason he could explain. All he had was this paralyzing fear that he couldn't shake, so he ended up wanting to go home.
Their father had been drinking that night, an opportunity he seldom got with the kids around. He wanted to be good, he wanted to raise his darling wife's kids well because she never got the chance to. It was hard, it was heartbreaking, it tore him apart more and more.
And their father drove to pick Ryland up.
Ryland was in the car that day with the fatal crash, nodding off in the backseat. It was practically an instant thing in his mind, one day on the road home with his father that could do anything he put his mind to, the next hearing the snap and skreech of metal, car alarms blaring in the background.
He remembers the hospital, sitting in the waiting room. He was too scared to even think about sleeping, only just remembering his father slumped over, the blood.
He never liked cars after that. He was scared, terrified even. Even a short ride down a back street would make him cry, too shaken up by the events to go with it passively.
Colt wasn't there that day. He didn't like cars but then he got to driving. It was... Nice to be the one in control, to be working it all out. His brother was paranoid as hell, listing things out of their control, but it didn't really matter once colt got his hands on things. He likes seeing things, experiencing them first hand, taking the lead, controlling the narrative. Even if he was reckless it was his own doing, and maybe that's what got him into stunts
Carefully planned recklessness.
So we have a brother scared to death of cars because of what he's seen, and a brother scared to death of not being in control of things. Both of them know the way that they are is because of fear, but neither of them can understand the way the other expresses it
Ryland gets A LOT of therapy over this though. Like. Alot. For many years. He eventually manages to be able to sit in a car when someone he either trusts or is experienced is driving. It still scares him, but sometimes you have to do it scared.
