C H E C K There’s nothing more to do at this moment. So wait patiently and prepare for a change. Thankfulness is what floods my heart. Courage from many years of seeing my mothers brave face and knowing she will need to show that face again. This week mom was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. We've started down the long road of so many unanswered questions. She has had to care for so many people with cancer. It hurts knowing that she's carrying the disease with her right now. Everyone one here is infinitely hopeful. There are so many unknowns right now except one. A change will happen. Sam Cooke's song has been in my head these few days. "There have been times that I thought I couldn't last for long But now I think I'm able to carry on It's been a long, a long time coming But I know a change is gonna come, oh yes it will." AN INSTANTANEOUS MOMENT About 10 years ago my roommate in collage fell into the ocean and was swept out with the current. As well as mourning for his family and for the passing of a very brilliant friend, I remember being shocked how a moment can change life so quickly. My whole life I've been familiar with Death. When your younger brother battles cancer for 10 years you become familiar with the idea of loss and that any day Death will come and end the struggle to stay alive. My brother is a brave man and although he greeted Death at his doorway, he did not go with him. Today I stood on the edge of where this nation meets its boundaries. I greeted the ocean that took my friend, as it has with many friends. I watched that sun sink into the sea and I wondered how we find our strengths to see a new day when we know this life is so fleeting. To me, this photo represents that question. "How then shall we live?" How do we find the strength and audacity to greet the next day, knowing a short sweep or a long struggle may lie ahead to take us away from this earth? There's a simple thing I am reminded to pray whenever I see the ocean. "God, you let the waves roll." It's something that has stuck with me for many years. True, it doesn't make a good prayer. It's not a request or a praise. I'm not asking for heeling or salvation. It is just an acknowledgment. The ocean will come with its waves. The tides will change and change again. Storms will tear apart boundaries and make new ones. And time will continue even though one day I will not. When that day comes is the question. It may be years from now when I'm old and falling apart, or it may be the next time I'm watching the sun set. Either way, the waves will continue to roll. And for that I am thankful. This is Saint Ignatius Church on the Corner of Fulton St and Parker Ave. It stands on the University of #SanFrancisco campus and, just like #SutroTower, it serves as a navigational landmark for when you get lost in the #City and need to find your way. @janeyjaners I always see this #church, and the view of the #GoldenGateBridge behind it, when we go for hikes around #BuenaVista park but I didn’t realize just how close it way. I decided to change up my #run this morning and go past this area. #Holiday times are perfect to find an empty #campus. I’m keeping my family in mind this month as they battle the expected temperatures of -15° in #Wisconsin while I debate if it’s too windy out or if I can go without my coat. This is also a time when we try juggle our travel costs and think “Is a red-eye #ChristmasEve to #Chicago only to return 20 hours later worth $800?” #NewYearsEve flights are always cheaper anyways. This #Christmas we’re staying in #SanFrancisco. It will be Jane’s first #California #winter. I’m thankful to my friends, old and new, who are here to spend it with us. **NEW VIDEO**LINK IN PROFILE** I wanted to take a look at the iconic #CoitTower. The views are as interesting as is the history of the woman who funded the site. The Plaque at the entrance to this tower reads: “This 210 food monument was built in 1933 with moneys bequeathed by Lillie Hitchcock Cost to beautify the city she loved. Frescoes were painted in the interior of the newly built structure by local artists funded through the United States government’s public works of art project. This plaque is placed by the recreation and park commission, October 8th, 1983 to mark Coit Tower’s 50th Anniversary and it’s designation as an historic landmark.” If you come to #SanFrancisco, hike up to Coit Tower, pay $8 and take the elevator to the top. A B A N D O N ~ My urge to travel started at an early age. Probably because we moved around a lot, although it didn't seem like that. Playing card games with my siblings in the back of our van was the same if we were in #NorthDakota or Florida. Traveling was the normal thing and eventually the expected thing. I remember one day in #Florida I came home to find my silver, single-speed #bicycle being given away. I was upset, like any 12 year old would be, until my mother told me we were moving back to Wisconsin. Moving meant new places and new adventures. I was happy to leave the old bike behind if it meant a newer Wisconsin bike would meet me in the North. Two years later, after that move, a friend of mine asked me why I would ever want to leave Rock County (Southern Wisconsin). It was a half-question and a half-challenge, like he was insulted that I would #dream about other places in the #world. I didn't know it then, but the following year I would be the first in my family to get a #passport and eagerly boarding a plane that was heading towards #Panama. ~ When I was 18 I somehow got it in my head that progress in life meant #traveling and that with each year I needed to be in more than one #country. I didn't realize then that I just redrew my boundary lines. I went from Rock County not being big enough, to the #USA not being big enough. Nothing against #Wisconsin, or #America. I’m sure I would have drawn the same lines if I was born in #Beirut or #Prague. It’s that I’ve been looking to travel to mark my progress through life, though I’m not sure why. And I'm pretty sure it's not the most healthiest way of living. This photo above was taken last month by @janeyjaners. The plane is a #Navy Douglas Super DC-3 which crash-landed in #Sólheimasandur #Iceland in #1973. I will be turning 32 in a few days. I’m already dreaming of #travel plans to #Havana for 2017. I'm still looking forward to traveling. I'm still struggling to count progress when I'm not. I'll leave you with a #poem that sums up these thoughts: ~Frightening and challenging. ~Uncertain and unknown. ~Take a blinded step forward ~Hold your deep breath ~That step maybe your last ~That step could be (at Reykjavík, Iceland)
