Verizon is leaving the engine of internet culture to sputter and die, and its communities to scramble for a new home.
āBut a former staff engineer, who recently left Tumblr and asked to remain anonymous for professional reasons, tells Vox that the NSFW ban was āin the works for about six months as an official project,ā adding that it was given additional resources and named āProject Xā in September, shortly before it was announced to the rest of the company at an all-hands meeting. ā[The NSFW ban] was going to happen anyway,ā the former engineer told me. āVerizon pushed it out the door after the child pornography thing and made the deadline sooner,ā but the real problem was always that Verizon couldnāt sell ads next to porn.ā

So all of this was just so Verizon could attempt to make money off of us with ads better.Ā Iāve never been happier to have so many ad-blocking, tracking-blocking security extensions, but so irritated at having a Verizon phone.
