Who should be called Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly or Kaine?
Probably both, it would please the fan-base of both characters.Ā Ā But in my opinion, I really do reckon that Kaine is by far the most deserving one of the mantle, he is the Scarlet Spider now:
(Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider issue #4)
Why? Because the roles got reversed.
Kaine was Peterās first clone, and he was a failure. He was both mentally and physically ill, so he ended up becoming a misguided villain and an assassin for hire. Indeed, he still remembers those days sometimes:
(Scarlet Spider (2012) issue #1)
The relationship of Ben and Kaine back then could be compared to Cain and Abel, with Kaine being Cain, and Ben being Abel; the demonic human vs the perfect one, the human monster vs the angelic human. That was Kaine and Ben in a nutshell:
However, similar to Venom:
Kaine was misguided, and ended up growing the hell up, and turning into an actual hero in his own way:
(Scarlet Spider (2012) issue #2)
Initially, he didnāt even wanted the name:
(Scarlet Spider (2012) issue #6)
But time has proven to be merciful, and Kaine built a life for himself, twice, both on his solo series:
And later as a member of the New Warriors:
He went from criminal, to anti-hero who sometimes manages to be a straight up hero, just like Venom himself.
Ben Reilly howeverā¦..He felled, and felled deeply into darkness:
(The Clone Conspiracy issue #3)
Sure, he was an anti-villain, but still a villain nonetheless:
(Clone Conspiracy issue #4)
Now he has realized the error of his mistakes and is trying to redeem himself. Still, itās hard to say heās worthy of the Scarlet Spider mantle when heās using brutal force unnecessarily, guilt tripping civilians into rewarding him and manipulating people:
(Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider issue #1 and #2)
Ben is now an anti-hero just like Kaine, but even worse. So now the roles reversed, and Kaine is the better person here, even though heās no saint.
I do think Ben is still the indigenous and groundbreaking Scarlet Spider of all time and will always be. Nevertheless, I must stick to the fact-based hypothesis of the Spider-Man Comics. So, Iād say that the one whoās worthy of the mantle now is Kaine, he effectively replaced Reilly for a while and ended up becoming slightly better than his brother.
