In English, words with a ‘G’ followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’ can be pronounced with either a hard ‘G’ or a soft ‘G’.

Words with Germanic roots such as ‘gear’, ‘get’, ‘gift’, ‘give’ (see above) are pronounced with a hard ‘g’ while words with Latin or Greek roots such as ‘gem’, ‘general’, ‘giraffe’, ‘giant’, are pronounced with a soft ‘g’.

So no, it’s not exactly a “general rule” that ‘g’ followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’ makes a soft ‘g’ sound. 

The following is a rough estimator to determine if I will accept a social invitation to hang out if I am otherwise free. The scale is set to my interests but may be useful in predicting the actions of other introverts who enjoy their private time and are reenergized by their (independent) hobbies as much as I am.

At lowest, the total has to be net positive to obtain an “okay.” The higher the positive value, the less likely I am to flake. A score of zero will result in a negative “maybe” and whether I ultimately go will depend on a variety of other unlisted factors such as the time interval between the invitation and the event, the duration of the event, the amount of fun I had with the inviter on a previous occasion, the weather, my mood, etc.

Exceptions include parties hosted by my best friend and those hosted by my bosses.

Negative point factors: - I have to get dressed: -2 - if I additionally have to look presentable (in other words, if I will be seen by people outside of my closest circle of friends), add -2 or -3 depending on the effort required - I will likely spend $10-25: -2; $25-40: -4; $40-60: -6; >$60: lol we better be going to a theme park - there will be someone there I don’t know: -2 - for every additional person I don’t know, add -3 - it is a movie I don’t want to see: -3 - it will take more than 30 minutes to get there: -2; >1hr: -3, >2hrs: -5, >3hrs: -10, >4hrs: lol the round trip better be worth it - my favorite show is airing tonight: -4 - I am in the middle of a really good book/series: -6 - I already returned home: -7 - I already ate: -8 - I already showered: -10 - I am already comfortable in bed: lolno - the inviter is a stranger: omgno who are you - I am absolutely uninterested in that activity: lolno sorry have fun without me

Positive point factors: - the inviter is a friend: +2 - for each additional friend present, add +1 - there is an animal to play with: +2 - for each additional cute animal, add +1 to a max of +3 - it is an activity I have some interest in: +2 - there is food: +3 - a close friend will be present: +3 - the inviter is a close friend: +4 - there is a board game: +4 - there is food that I know is delicious: +4 - it is a movie I want to see: +5 - it is an activity I’m interested in: +5 - there is delicious free food: +6 - there is a group Nintendo game: +8 - we are going to a magical theme park: +9

Examples: A friend (+2) invites me out (-4) to a local restaurant (+3) with a friend of hers I don’t know (-2) = -1 = “Sorry, maybe next time.”
