Main info:
🪲 Michael is one of the oldest boys, if you can call him that, on the island, but despite the fact that he is 16, he easily gets lost in the crowd of younger children because of his height and build.
🪲 He has diabetes, which is why his health is poor and wounds are not healing well. His insulin supply was destroyed in a plane crash, and the medicine in his carry-on bag quickly deteriorated due to the heat. For the same reason, he soon began to have problems with nutrition: he starves, trying to lower blood sugar levels, which leads to hypoglycemia, then overeats because of this, which later causes him to suffer from pre-ketoacidosis. The situation worsened when the hunters separated from the tribe and there was less alternative to fruit.
🪲 In the early days, he got along well with Jack and the other boys from the choir, getting involved in harmless pranks with them and annoying Ralph with it. However, when Merridew's behavior became aggressive and led to a confrontation between the boys, Michael distanced from him, remained on Ralph's side and began to get closer to Simon.
🪲 In general, Michael's character can be called non-conflict: he tries to avoid direct quarrels, tolerates or laughs it off in response to the humiliations addressed to him, and usually spits out anger and resentment behind the backs of people, because he is too cowardly to clarify the relationship, preferring to complain to trusted friends. He also jokes rudely and vulgarly, trying to look more mature and manly due to this.
🪲 Sprucer often tries to shirk work or get the easiest tasks, citing his health. Despite grumbling and complaining, he is quite responsible when it comes to things he can handle, but becomes very nervous if is not confident in his abilities and is not given a choice.
🪲 Michael dies before Simon. Every day his condition worsens: he drives himself to ketoacidosis, which causes him to constantly dehydrate and vomit, sleeps a lot, and due to wounds on legs, infection and necrosis occur, which soon makes him unable to walk. He spends some time in a comatose state before finally fading away.

Personal line:
🪲 Michael had a twin sister, Michelle, who was also on the plane but died in the crash. Their relationship to existence could be called unusual: none of them felt like their biological gender, and they often joked that if it were possible, they would gladly switch bodies; it's quite strange to see that literally one step away from you is what you should be on Indeed, but you are a ban in this meat cage. In everyday life, they helped each other in social gender adaptation, if possible: swap clothes, makeup, and the like. Sometimes they complained to each other about the shortcomings of their bodies, sometimes swore on the basis of gender envy, because "how can you trade what you have for this."
🪲 On the first day he wakes up, he found Michelle's severed head on the coast. This has greatly shaken his condition. He takes the head with him and wraps it in a shirt, later hiding it in a cave and trying to protect it from the environment, such as light, dampness or insects, in order to keep Michelle's features recognizable for as long as possible. He keeps his find a secret from the others and returns to it periodically.
🪲 After this event, he begins to lose mind. He imagines a tulpa based on Michelle, talks to her alone, and she often acts as an invisible guide when the boy encounters things he couldn't handle on his own, reminding him what to do. Sometimes Michael copies her behavior from memories when she was still alive, referring to that at such moments "she takes control of his body."
🪲 When the hunters painted to disguise themselves and found other people's suitcases, he joined them for fun. As a result, as body art, he depicted female sexual characteristics such as breasts and uterus, tried on women's clothing and jewelry, after justifying himself by saying that "it's for a joke." Later, when he is alone with himself, he admires his reflection in the water.
🪲 One day, he tells Simon about his sister and their story, the desire to exchange bodies with her, and adds that "it turned out to be fifty percent," hinting that now Michelle's soul is in him too and they share the same shell for two. He will even invite Simon to "meet Michelle" and show him the place where he hides her head. Simon will keep Michael's secret, but will distance himself from him after that moment.
🪲 After Michael is left all alone, his mental state deteriorates completely: he practically does not leave his shelter until "Michelle" suggests that he complete the "body swap" by scalping her head and trying it on himself. "You let me be a real boy, now it's your turn to be a real girl," she says. Michael hesitates for a long time, because he is afraid to desecrate the only part of Michelle that he really has, but she insists, saying that "the head will rot, and then there will be nothing left." Succumbing, he cuts off the scalp and puts it on himself, after which looks at his reflection by the water for a long time, losing touch with reality more and more. In the end, he returns to the camp in this form to demonstrate his new "role," which scares the rest of the boys. He is not aggressive, but, on the contrary, seems to be too vulnerable at this moment, so Ralph does not send Michael away, but together with Simon they try to calm him down and put him in order. Later, he is isolated from the main group, leaving one of his other buddies to keep an eye on him.
🪲 This whole situation leaves another mark on Michael: he has lost not only the last part of Michelle, but also the trust of others. He deliberately drives himself to ketoacidosis, wanting to commit suicide in this way and hoping to meet his sister again on the other side.

Before island:
🪲 Michelle and Michael's parents were never married, both children lived with mother and have her last name. Michael barely remembers dad and does not keep in touch with him, but Michelle, on the contrary, sometimes visited him and traveled to the neighboring city. It is known that he often took her hunting and taught archery. On one of last visits, the girl stole a survival handbook from father and, when she returned home, read it with brother, promising that one day, when the war was over, they would go camping together.
🪲 Michael obviously spent more time with mother, and because of poor health, she was quite overprotective, which is why he has problems with basic skills and social adaptation. Michelle was more independent than him and often took on the role of leader when they had to go somewhere together.
🪲 Mother often criticized Michelle for being unfeminine and rude, saying that dad was a bad influence on her, allowing her to behave like this, and sometimes she felt reproductive pressure. It is also known that Michael's father also criticized him because of the gender discrepancy, but he only heard about it from phone conversations. This is why Michael avoided communicating with dad, and Michelle sought to distance from mom.
