The most basic, intractable fact about mental illnesses is that you simply cannot willpower your way out of them. The only exceptions to this rule are the ones I have, which continue to disable me due to lack of determination and other grave personal flaws
I get why fantasy authors would default to using, like, the same basic arrangement of seasons and weather and gravity that we have here in The Real World because they have to make up so much shit as it is and it IS probably good praxis to give your readers some familiar touchstones in your world so they can just focus on the plot, but. having said that. I think there should be more settings that have seventeen seasons, all of them different lengths, and constellations that don't have fixed patterns because sometimes they'll get pissy and just move to a different part of the sky, and sometimes the sun tells people things telepathically, and there's a type of weather where the air just gets really thick and difficult to walk through that's unpleasant but not any more uncommon than rain. it's called smärklf.
my profound condolences to everyone who has reblogged to say that smärklf already exists where they live :(
Thing That Happens Sometimes: Smärklf
🐸 for @merthurmicrofic • from Daniel Quinn's The Story of B
i have to make a post because now i'm annoyed: arthur never EARNS gwen's love! with the exception of the singular lancelot x gwen episode in s2, arthur just assumes that his love is reciprocated, and gwen just hands it to him. the challenges that their relationship face are mostly external to the relationship, social expectations and hierarchical restrictions and whatnot. if lancelot didn't die in s4e2, we could've had a proper love triangle arc throughout s4 where gwen's love for arthur wavers, and he has to EARN it. he has to prove to her, and the AUDIENCE, that he's better for her than lancelot, but there's never an opportunity for an actually complex situation to emerge. we could've had lancelot, the noble knight torn between love and duty, and gwen, the good woman torn between love and loyalty, and merlin, the loyal servant torn between his friendship with lancelot / gwen, and his friendship / duty / suspiciously intense situation with arthur. we could've had merlin discover a secret affair between two of his friends, and struggle to keep yet another secret from arthur. who does he side with, his king or his friends? we don't know. we never get to see it. if arthur had suspicions about an affair between lancelot and gwen, would he still be a fair leader to lancelot? would he purposefully put lancelot in danger to eliminate him as a threat? would he decide to put effort in and prove to gwen that he's a good partner deserving of her love? we don't know. we never get to see it. the writers were too cowardly to let gwen (and lancelot!) make complicated "morally gray" decisions (ones that ALIGNED WITH THE LEGEND), and too nervous to write actual competition between lancelot and arthur, because we can't risk a knight outshining the guy whose face is in the middle of the poster. the battle was over before it could even start. instead, arthur gives gwen a limp flower from the side of the road (and gwen ACCEPTS it!!), he later forgets their anniversary, gwen's autonomy is undermined (for the 100th time), lancelot's autonomy is also undermined and his legacy is tarnished, and merlin's loyalty to arthur is untested.
i'm not done i'm not done! let's say that merlin keeps the gwen x lancelot secret (they're his friends, he doesn't want to see them hurt, he tries to find a solution where he doesn't have to tell arthur, bc their relationship really has nothing to do with his destiny, right? right? let's phone a friend, let's ask the dragon...the dragon is watching love island and won't pick up the phone), arthur finds out about the affair, then finds out that merlin KNEW and KEPT IT FROM HIM! his closest friend kept an enormous secret from him, something directly affecting his personal life, something very important to him -- and merlin, who he thought always had his back, and was always on his side, lied to him!!! chose lancelot over him, just like gwen! and now arthur doesn't trust him, and merlin witnesses the severe reaction, potentially loses his job because of it, or gets demoted and now rarely sees arthur, and decides that he could never tell arthur about his magic because if this is how arthur reacted about one secret, can you imagine how he'd react about another??? BUT NOOOOOOO. we can't have complicated storylines that test relationships because???? because???? what's the reason????????

i hate when family comes over and theyre like how’s the job going. how’s the education going. and i’m just like don’t talk to me unless it’s about the Show i just watched
Insane that being in your 20s counts as adulthood. Being in your 20s just feels like the sequel to being a teenager
No exactly you get it you get it
“emasculating” is a euphemism for “demeaning in a way only women should have to suffer”
my nuance pervert take on arthur and why i find him so fascinating as a character is rooted almost entirely in the ways violent systems of oppression, toxic masculinity, cultural heteronormativity, and generational cycles of abuse warp people who are positioned to benefit from them. especially if they have to mold themselves into a different shape to fit into those boxes or the ways in which they attempt to rail against those confines or the blind spots they have because of them or or or
like arthur is so much more interesting to me because his upbringing left him so deeply flawed. because his innate kindness and compassion and morality got twisted inside him for so many reasons, and his tragedy is that he ultimately doesn’t escape the influence of his father or the systems that allotted him enough privileges that he never felt the need to examine how he was (knowingly or not) perpetuating those patterns
my other nuance pervert take is that the show writers weren’t brave enough to lean fully or consistently enough into what they were trying to say about arthur or the war on magic in general for that aspect of his character to have the impact it could’ve
i think a lot of people internalized the misogynistic idea that “men are rational and women are emotional” and just went “that’s true… but it’s a good thing!” instead of saying “that’s obviously bullshit and we shouldn’t perpetuate this belief in any form”

“make friends” who am i doctor franking stein
on my slides for my class about Frankenstein today
That's kind of why they exist actually
If it makes you feel any better, he hated it too.
This is the funniest and saddest sentence I've read all week
merlin who holds onto his loyalty to arthur because if he didn’t, then what would all of the deaths he has caused be for? merlin who has basically betrayed his kind, but no it’s okay, because the ends justify the means! merlin who is fucking terrified of himself. merlin who wants to run every time he’s depended on. who hears the words ‘destiny’ or ‘prophecy’ or ‘emrys’ or even ‘I’m scared’ and hesitates.
if he chose either heart or mind, if he could have stuck with a path, then maybe they would have been saved. kill morgana or care for her, not both. help mordred or kill him, not both. but his indecision was the death of everyone around him.
merlin with a lack of confidence so bad that everything he is anymore is just a persona, an archetype of a fool he has been trying to fill for ten years. he’s the most powerful sorcerer to ever walk the earth, but he’s so disconnected from the version of him that takes initiative, that acts from the heart, that stands up for what is right. he’s given so much of himself to these lies, shamed himself into keeping his magic secret even when it was better if he shared it, repressed who he truly was so much to the point where he doesn’t even know who he is anymore.
merlin who, after arthur dies, has to look at his hands, red with the blood of his kin, and realise just how badly he has fucked up. and then he has to look in the mirror and realise he doesn’t know who or what he is anymore.
it's really sad to think about that male characters in media will always get grace and sympathy and be consistently praised for being "such a well written character" when he's done some fucked up things and people will brush it aside because He's Traumatized and He's A Flawed And Interesting Character. but female characters who can also be flawed and interesting and have gone through their own traumas that would explain their behavior, but once they do something the audience wouldn't like, they turn on her. and that she's Pure Evil or She's Annoying and that she doesn't deserve any sympathy to the point where they're wishing her to die. and it really shows that a female character would be loved by the fandom if she was a guy. and that a male character would be hated if he was a girl. and that's not even that far off reach! because it's true!

Here's the thing I keep trying to articulate and possibly failing: I don't actually mind characters who are terrible people. I have enjoyed many. What I mind is characters who are terrible people while the narrative keeps trying to say that they are wonderful, often contradicting what the narrative shows us, with no self awareness
The problem is not the goodness or badness of the character, the problem is the extreme disconnect between telling (by the narrative, not other characters) and showing
The irony of Homelander seeing himself as an absolutely superior being, above ordinary humans to the point that he considers them almost like animals he can treat however he wants and the overwhelming rage he feels toward Hughie, who is literally just a weak, soft, completely average human, yet someone everyone loves and appreciates and would risk their lives for. Because Homelander is incapable of understanding love, emotional bonds, or the impact that genuine people have on others, Hughie’s very existence feels like an offense to him and at the same time, something he envies.
