While I get why some people want a detailed flashback about Takao's middle school team losing to Teikou, what really irks me is the way they use the lack of it as proof for Fujimaki's half-hearted effort to write him. Well........ we can never really know what sensei was thinking when he wrote his characters anyway so the reason I'm annoyed is mostly because I'm already satisfied with what he gave us and seeing people talking about it like an incomplete mess just feels like they're downplaying Takao as a character.
Like, imo that kind of flashback is not even that necessary because whether we know exactly what happened or not doesn't change anything tho??? Didn't Takao himself specifically say that he liked Midorima because of the way he did everything humanly possible? Midorima's attitude toward Takao had already begun to change the moment he heard Takao declaring that he'd practice more than him, and wasn't that enough to explain why he eventually came to trust Takao so deeply? In the end, the only thing Midorima ever needed to know was that even after Teikou had mentally crushed so many opponents during the time of their talent bloom, Takao was still one of the few people who chose not to give up. And Takao had already proved it by staying with Midorima until the he finished practicing every single day, not just through empty words. So why in the world would Midorima need to know every detail of how frustrated Takao felt after losing that match?
Also I don't like the interpretation that Takao's goal of taking revenge on Midorima was completely abandoned simply because they ended up on the same team. Like, does Takao, the same guy who had once reminded us that "this is just high school basketball," and was more aware than most characters in this series that every player is bound to experience defeat, really look like the type to obsess over getting revenge for a defeat out of pure resentment?
I mean, there was a reason why his goal changed from wanting revenge on Midorima to wanting Midorima's recognition and they ending up at the same school wasn't the whole story. At their core, both of Takao's goals were driven by the same desire: to become someone Midorima could never forget. That makes even more sense when Takao himself did explain in the manga the reason why he recognized Midorima in the first place (i.e. it heavily implied why Takao only wanted to be recognized by Midorima and not by any other GoM members), while Midorima in middle school had spent so long taking victory for granted that he didn't even remember playing against Takao's team. And that underlying motivation wouldn't have changed even if they'd ended up at different high schools.
At the end of the day, Takao was the one who had made Midorima's life so much better and he couldn't even hold a proper grudge against anyone since he had no problem befriending his opponents, so clearly his story and his character-writing are never meant to be turned into a tragedy like that. Everything he did for Midorima from chapter 180 flashback onwards already gives us more than enough to talk about. Takao was Midorima's present and future and he never needed to be tied to Midorima's ugly past to become a deeper or more interesting character for god's sake.
here is which DnD class and species i think each character would be - based on vibes and extrapolation of canon, not strictly the canon itself bc otherwise they would all be fighters
so (buckle up bc this is a longer one)
kafka: cleric, grave domain - hobgoblin
a grave domain cleric concerns themselves with the line between life and death and the good treatment of souls of the deceased. one of their main duties is to care for and protect the restless dead and give them peace
this reminded me of kafka’s responsibility toward the dead soldiers whose resentment spawned no 8. i debated going with paladin - kafka has a mission and a responsibility and reverence for these souls. but ultimately, kafka’s main goal to stand beside mina didn't feel like an oath to me? also, his other narrative purpose is to bring healing to the people around him, tho in the kn8 story that manifests as emotional healing only
the choice to make him a hobgoblin comes from a similar place. hobgoblins' main species trait is to give and receive help from their allies, and this felt very fitting

seriously tho, canon mina is specialised for long distance shooting. she can do other stuff, sure, but shooting shit from far away with a beast companion by her side? doesn’t get more mina than that
fighters get a lot of attacks and rangers can add a buttload of damage, making this build a great long-range heavy hitter.
mina is basically a specialist min-maxxer, both in canon and my dnd build for her
mina has an elegance that makes me think of classical elves, and the wood elf variant gives her extra speed and pairs well with the ranger class
reno: sorcerer, shadow magic subclass - triton
i honestly wasn’t sure with this one, because reno doesn't stand out as particularly charismatic, but i think sorcerers should be con-based casters anyway so whatever
i couldn’t resist the flavouring of shadow sorcerers having bodies as cold as ice, and they get access to a lot of cold-damage related spells , which fits reno well
sorcerers are heavy-hitters, dramatic and cool to look at. i think that fits renos very dramatic and badass no. 6 suit
triton gives my boy cold resistance. that's basically it.
kikoru: paladin, oath of vengeance subclass - blue dragonborn
this one is a bit of a no-brainer for me
kikoru is the ultimate paladin - a life long mission with an oath that is both personal and institutional in nature, she’s a heavy hitter with a greataxe and she deserves to have her smites. she embodies hope for the defense force's future
her dedication and her personal preference for dramatic flair is what made me go for paladin rather than fighter, though i might multi-class her as she levels up
obviously her motivations extend beyond avenging her parents but that’s still very important to her. the vengeance subclass is less focused on healing, centreing more on dealing heavy damage and bringing opponents low. that suits kikoru.
that being said, kikoru has also made a (naive) promise that, as long as she is on the battlefield, no one will die. though she can't heal too much, her paladin's aura of protection reflects this
dragonborn is so i can give her wings and lightning breath to match her thunderous axe.
hoshina: monk, way of the kensei subclass - harengon
kensei literally means "sword saint" and is an honorary title given to legendary swordfighters.
monk offers unparalleled mobility and speed, making them almost impossible to hit. their power derives from intense focus and militant mental and physical training. it also has a sort of traditional vibe to it - a perfect fit for hoshina. also i had to let the guy run on walls
the way of the kensei also allows characters to specialise in a large range of weapons, which hoshina is more than capable of (so long as guns aren't involved). he's shown training kikoru on how to use her axe, for example.
harengons are the perfect mobility species, allowing for large jumps and a boost to dexterity saving throws.
iharu: fighter, psi warrior subclass - satyr
our first actual fighter! iharu’s personality is very front-line fighter and i can’t see him really maintaining the focus and concentration for spell casting
the psi warrior subclass is built to have large spikes in power that function instantly but don't last long. their effects can change the tide of a battle but they are instantaneous and brief. this fits iharu's rare ability to unleash bursts of captain-level combat power for brief moments
i chose satyr because, while i can't see iharu casting spells, i can very much see him being resistant to them. he powers through obstacles in a very straightforward way. he's very emotionally mature (as demonstrated by his healthy response to feeling outcompeted by reno) and physically stout - just try manipulating him, either mentally or physically
also, satyrs are revelers built to be social. iharu is charismatic as hell, and a satyr's "mirthful leaps" fit his personality and abilities very well
isao: paladin, oath of the watchers subclass - orc
like father like daughter. i challenge you to find a person more on a mission than this man. his oath is dead serious and he will put it before anything, even the opportunity to be a father and part of a family.
he’s also such a heavy hitter. as with kikoru, smites work perfectly for him. being able to heal himself with lay on hands also reflects some of his durability
oath of the watchers reflects this man’s purpose and constant vigilance. he will protect this world from monsters and won’t turn away from the threat for a second. he is always "on". a watchers' "aura of the sentinel" also reflects this, giving him a big bonus to initiative.
the orc species gives him occasional bursts of speed, but most importantly it gives him "relentless endurance", which further highlights his crazy durability.
narumi: wizard, school of divination subclass - human
my boy my favourite i'm sorry
i imagine a lot of people would’ve envisioned a less squishy class for Absolute Tank Captain Narumi, but hear me out
in canon, he’s a hit point tank for sure. he manually overrides his suit, pushes himself to the brink and still gets himself to stand. but if we add a fun lil fantasy twist to canon, divination wizard makes a lot of sense
narumi’s a much more tactical character than he seems. unlike the other numbers weapons, his doesn’t actually significantly increase his raw offensive power- no wings, no gauntlets, etc. what it let's him do is analyse, react and get ahead of his opponent tactically. it's information-based, not damage-based. it's about smarts. it also requires an incredible amount of processing speed in the brain, and the ability to juggle masses of information without being overwhelmed
spoilers for ppl who’ve only watched the anime, but this is even truer for his green-eyed variant. while reading a body's electrical signals is already tough, it's likely that it was intuitive to kaiju no. 1, just like any other bodily sense it had. it is therefore likely inutitive to no. 1's user too. however, the green-eyed variant relies purely on a highly developed understanding of chemistry, physics and biology. there's no in-built how-to guide, because kaiju no. 1 didn't have that green-eyed ability. everything narumi can see with his eyes on green mode he has to consciously process, understand, recognise and name. watching electrons move means jack shit if you don’t know what it is you’re seeing. that’s a lot of brain power!
hence, wizard. divination is obviously in reference to his “being able to see the future”
the choice to go with human is linked to narumi's backstory. lots of fantasy media likes to give non-human species loads of special abilities that humans don't have, and in contrast define humans by their tenacity and adaptability. narumi was born with nothing, grew up with nothing and had to fight his way through every step of his life with no special privileges or gifts. what's more tenacious than that?
hasegawa strikes me as too straightforward to want to mess with magic, and this straightforward reliability is what made me go for fighter. they might seem "boring" but fighters are scary for their consistency and reliability - two things i feel hasegawa embodies
battle master reflects his experience as a long standing veteran and optimises protection-focused abilities. in this world of non-martial narumi, i envision hasegawa as his bodyguard
goliath is...fairly obvious, i feel. the man is huge, and being able to grow even more for short periods of time reflects his big-ass combat suit from canon
shinonome: barbarian, path of the beast subclass - tiefling
this one is very vibes based, and heavily influenced by my own personal hcs of shinonome. i just envision her as a real toughy who you can hit over and over and she won’t back down. the rage bonus to damage makes me think of her no-nonsense personal weapon from canon
like hasegawa and iharu, i can't really see her messing with magic too much. she would much rather deck you. barbarian gives her extra hit points, adding to her tough nature.
her subclass and species are a little more complicated, and i don't want to give too much away because i might write more about shinonome in a fic, but i've kind of pinned a lot of the complexity of femininity onto her character - what it means to be tough, to be masculinised one moment and then not be masculine enough in another.
just trust me on this one i have reasons
those are most of the characters i’ve pinned down so far. i have more but this post is already too long. I’m thinking of writing a fantasy AU piece in conjunction w this but honestly i do not have the time

so like i’ve said before i miss when we had more fan-selected character theme songs/playlists so i made some for the shinomiya family (incl. narumi)
isao’s and hikari’s are obviously much shorter than narumi and kikoru’s because they have less screen time. i’m not super happy w kikoru’s yet, feels incomplete, but if anyone has suggestions lmk! each playlist is supposed to match their vibe beyond just the specific lyrics of the song, for example isao’s playlist is almost entirely much older songs, bc he’s an older guy
(if kikoru’s is still under a different name i’m sorry i can’t seem to change it)
We still need to talk about how crazy it is that Reo calls Akashi “Sei-chan” its so funny I love it the Captain of the Miracle Gen joins your team and automatically becomes your captain too despite all of you being older than him and has a notable menacing aura and a king complex and ankle breaks everyone on court even though they’re like twice his height and threatens to hurt people and gouge his own eyes out and Reo looked at All Of That and was like 🥰 💗✨Sei-chan!🥰💗✨ hes such a trooper
you know, the kaiju no. 8 b-side is great and all (i still think it should have been incorporated into the main manga, that might’ve fixed some pacing issues, boo publishing deadlines), but i feel like i don’t see that much discussion digging into why narumi hates people caring more about effort than results (maybe i’ve just missed it, or maybe it’s obvious to people and spelling it out in an extremely long rant is unnecessary but whatever)
like, in my mind, the very pragmatic thought process of “results are the only things that matter, effort is inconsequential” is a conviction that narumi hides behind rather than something he actually believes deep down - the manga, b-side and even kn8 game all include content that shows that narumi (not so) secretly works very, very hard. the b-side shoves that in your face, actually. it’s also a very immature take, one that narumi developed as an actual child. like, of course effort matters. it’s what allows you improve. skill alone won’t get you far. plus, trying something difficult and pushing through it is a skill in itself.
but for narumi, it’s easier - or maybe even psychologically essential - to hide behind the belief that effort means nothing, because if effort *does* mean something, then he has to acknowledge and sit with the fact that it was *his* effort specifically that meant nothing to others as a child, because *he* meant nothing to others. the families of the kids he outcompeted didn’t care whether their kid was the best, they just wanted to support and love their child. but nobody did that for narumi: nobody cared if he tried, nobody cared if he worked hard, no one even cared that he was the best - because no one cared about *him*.
that must be absolutely soul crushing to think about - i’d run from that thought too if i’d grown up like that. so rather than live the lonely narrative of “literally nobody loved me enough to look at me no matter how good i was”, he created the narrative “the world is stupid for caring more about whether you try than if you succeed” to explain his life, and holds onto that narrative like his life depends on it.
i’m not saying narumi’s conviction is entirely invented/self-protecting. if you try and still can’t produce results, then you don’t belong in his division (because you’ll fucking die), and i do believe he doesn’t care about someone’s manners or grace or cleanliness. but i don’t believe he’s being entirely honest with himself about why he hates being seen working hard…it must be humiliating to try so, so hard and have no one care, and he lived like that for all his formative years.
WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY NEXT POINT ABOUT ISAO AND HOW HES NOT NECESSARILY ALL WISE AND SMART but this post is already too long so i’m gonna make a separate one
