You can call an experience or relationship traumatic even if thereâs no one you can/want to blame for what happened.
If you were traumatized by what happened, that impact is real even if it isnât anyoneâs fault. There are situations where everyone involved does their best with the information and abilities they have and someone still experiences trauma.
Abuse is not the only traumatic experience, just a common one. Not having your needs met for totally blameless reasons can be traumatic. Having your autonomy taken away by illness or other random chance can be traumatic. Many traumatizing experiences can happen when youâre utterly alone. Even âordinary experiencesâ can be traumatic in some contexts.
Thereâs no reason for trauma thatâs âtoo sillyâ. If youâre traumatized, itâs not because youâre âtoo sensitiveâ and it doesnât automatically mean youâre minimizing other peopleâs experiences.
Youâre allowed to acknowledge your trauma. Youâre allowed to look at experiences youâve had through the lens of trauma. Youâre allowed to grieve and process your traumatic experiences even if you donât understand why they were traumatic or if similar experiences didnât tramautize others you know.
Youâre allowed to acknowledge how badly you were hurt even if you canât point a finger at one person who hurt you.
The reason I donât believe cultural appropriation is a thing is because you canât âstealâ a culture. Theft involves depriving someone else of something. If a white wears a kimono, other kimonos still exist for Japanese people to wear.
âTwo ways in which cultural appropriation can be harmful are easily identified. The first sort of harm is violation of a property right ⌠The second sort of harm is an attack on the viability or identity of the cultures or their members. Appropriation that undermines a culture in these ways would certainly cause devastating and clearly wrongful harm to members of the culture ⌠Other acts of appropriation potentially leave members of a culture exposed to discrimination, poverty and lack of opportunity.â - from The Ethics of Cultural Appropriation (edited by Young and Brunk)
Cultural appropriation also causes a process known in anthropology as crystallization, where the tradition gets âfrozenâ in time like a museum display and can no longer evolve according to the needs of the people in the culture, effectively taking it away from them.
There have also been cases where the appropriation of a tradition is misrepresentative to the point where the people in the culture are no longer allowed to do it without experiencing racism or discrimination, which also prevents the people in the culture from practicing their own traditions.
So there are various ways you can âstealâ cultural traditions without physically taking them.
Cultural appropriation exists regardless of whether or not you choose to believe it.
That last line tho.
