Gar at his heart is an affection-starved character.
I think a lot of Gar's characterization, especially in the NTT, becomes more interesting when you stop looking at his flirtatiousness, sexual humor, constant joking, and attention-seeking as isolated personality traits and look at the kind of childhood he actually had.
Gar was a neglected and abused kid.
He lost his biological parents extremely young, was left in the care of adults who repeatedly failed to provide him with the stability and affection he needed, and his relationship with Steve Dayton in particular was deeply unhealthy. Steve could care about Gar and still be neglectful and abusive toward him. Intent doesn't erase the effect it has on a child when the person who is supposed to care for you consistently fails you. And I think that matters enormously for understanding adult/teenage Gar, Because Gar is constantly performing, he's funny, he's flirtatious., he's loud, he's charming, he makes inappropriate jokes, he wants people to laugh. He wants attention.. he frequently acts like absolutely nothing can embarrass him...
But that can also be read as a kid who has learned that being entertaining is a way of securing affection.. if people are laughing at his jokes, they're paying attention to him, If people find him charming, they're interested in him, If people find him attractive, he's desirable, If he's constantly making himself useful, funny, or entertaining, then maybe people will keep him around.
And that's where I think his sexual humor becomes particularly interesting.. I'm not saying every single joke Gar makes is secretly a trauma response obviously 80s comics were also writing him as a teenage boy with a deliberately exaggerated sense of humor. But his flirtatiousness and sexual bravado can absolutely be interpreted as part of the same larger need for validation and affection, There's a difference between “Gar is horny because that's his personality.” and “Gar has learned to associate being desired with being valued.” the second interpretation makes so much more sense with his history because underneath all that bravado, Gar is someone who desperately wants to be wanted, not necessarily sexually. Not even romantically... he wants people to choose him, he wants people to care about him, he wants reassurance that he's loved, he wants a family that isn't going to disappear on him, and that's why the Titans are so important to him, for all the jokes and flirting and ridiculous behavior, these people become his family... they're people who see Gar as Gar. Not as an experiment. Not as an asset. Not as someone's responsibility. Not as a kid who needs to perform for approval...
They keep choosing him.
And I think that's one of the most important things about Gar's character, His humor doesn't necessarily mean he's carefree, his confidence doesn't necessarily mean he's secure, his flirtatiousness doesn't necessarily mean he's emotionally fulfilled, sometimes the person making the most jokes about being wanted is the person who has spent their entire childhood wondering whether anybody actually wanted them at all.. Gar's tragedy is that he can turn his own emotional deprivation into something entertaining enough that everyone laughs with him instead of asking why he needs so badly to be loved.
At his heart, Gar isn't just a character who wants attention. He's a character who has spent much of his life starving for affection and learned to disguise that hunger as humor.
Oh hey look guys a kitty
OH MY GOSH-
Hate the minimization of the Titans' effect on Dick's character, especially considering it's almost always to uplift the "Batfam" dynamic. There isn't anything wrong with the batfam, but before that even became a thing, there were the Titans. The Titans were some of his longest standing friends, who showed him (before retconsssss) that he could be independent. He's been through so much with them and, in my opinion, they played almost as critical of a role in shaping the hero he came to be as Batman.
so sick and twisted that that blond man has all her unconditional love !!!

When you've just began writing your fanfic but then there's suddenly a new meme idea that has occupied your brain and won't leave until you make that meme.
Anyway so there's how Faren Brosca met Duncan from Duncan's POV:
This low effort thing kept me awake at 3 AM and it took me 2 hours to finish it.
And I regret nothing.
I'm still seeing people blame Dickkory shippers for Dick and Kory not being together.
"If you have just made Titans comics a Top Seller, DC would bring them back."
So let me get this straight... even if the comic doesn’t treat Dickkory like a ship, doesn’t put them in a relationship and barely has them speak... we’re still supposed to buy it? What kind of logic is that 💀
Again why would Dickkory fans waste their hard earned money on comics where their ship isn’t even a couple? Right now Kory isn’t even ON the Titans team anymore but they still expect us to buy it?
It’s like telling Peter/MJ shippers: "Keep buying Spiderman comics even if MJ is with Paul or other dudes because If sales are high enough Marvel will bring Peter and MJ back!" 😭
If a company has to guilt you into spending money on the hope they’ll give you what you want someday, that’s not them valuing fans. That’s them valuing your wallet.
A publisher that actually respects a ship would just... write them as a couple first.
Look at the YA Teen Titans: Together graphic novel. Last few months ago, on his Instagram stories, Picolo was posting previews of Dick and Kory on dates BEFORE the book even drops. THAT is worth supporting. Not a book where they have 2 panels and zero chemistry.
And honestly? You only get to blame DickKory shippers if Dickkory ARE a couple in the book and it still flops. You can’t blame them for not buying something they have every reason not to buy. "They’re not together and rarely talk" is reason enough.
Let’s also be real, money isn’t gonna fix this. Even if the mainline Titans sold 1 million copies a month, that wouldn’t magically bring Dickkory back.
The problem is editorial. In the 80s they worked because Dick and Kory were under the same Titans office. Now Dick is locked under the Batoffice who personally prefers him with Barbara. Sales don’t override that.
And on top of that, DC barely promotes Titans like they do Batman. How many differrent Batman titles drop every month vs Titans? They keep scrapping Titans writers’ ideas, sidelined the original lineup and gave us new Titans characters nobody asked for. Then they turn around and blame Dickkory fans for low sales?
Nah. Stop guilt tripping fans. Support the books that actually respect Dickkory. Stop funding the ones that don’t.
My words exactly! Thank you!
I don't think the 2000s cartoon Dick Grayson Robins wearing pants is that big of a deal. Tim Drake does not have a monopoly on pants. The pants are part of a modernized version of the Robin costume and that's what they put in the cartoon.

Personal gold stars
Ngl reading through older Titans books are a bit of a humiliation ritual.
I never feel quite as bitchless as I do when I see Dick and Kory being affectionate. Like damn.
It is surprising, given I do plenty of other dorky things, that this is what tips me over into being embarrassed. But. Damn. No bitches here. All the bitches there. Sad.
I’m going. To die.
THE HAND.
extremely niche pet peeve but I'm still annoyed about Raven saying "fuck you, Dad" to Trigon at the end of the last Trigon arc despite her calling him Father for the past 40 years

Me reading the Tales of the Teen Titans issue where Kori says Earth is her planet now and the latest New Titans where Kori says Earth never was her planet in the same week
SOMEONE MAKE HIM STOPP
@starshinequeen thx for reminding me abt this
Dick, honey why are you like this?!
He gets it from his dad 🥰
Obviously different characters, but it has to be the 80s/early 90s, right?
Next we have Ollie also licking a strange powdery substance as well
Their investigative skills as detectives clearly hinge on how accurate their taste buds are at identifying potential drugs.
