Sure, pre-Crisis has far less of a contentious start. Dick literally walks into the cave with the box for the specific purpose of giving it to Jason.

And it’s understandable in the pre-Crisis version of events, where Dick wasn’t fired but instead chose to leave the Robin mantle, and was borderline enthusiastic to hand it over to Jason. There was no bad blood to be seen between Dick and Bruce, and this enabled an incredibly healthy, incredibly wholesome initial bond with Jason, too. It was very gooey and very sweet and, honestly, kind of how I wish things went for modern purposes.

But it also gives me an appreciation for post-Crisis.

Dick was fired and discarded in this version, Jason had been operating as Robin for a while without Dick’s knowledge instead of just becoming Robin right before, and the mix of feeling wronged and abandoned led to Dick being much more of an ass initially. Even though I get where Dick is coming from, and a lot of it stems from worry over Jason’s safety, it still makes me cringe to see him snap at Jason during their initial meeting in that drug bust.

But after Dick yells at Bruce and (I’m supposing) was able to internally reconcile that his angst was with Bruce’s perceived abandonment rather than any slight from Jason, the ending is the same. He has the same oversized dramatic white box full of his old costume, a blessing, and an invitation to talk about the woes of being the child sidekick.
