Have Courage, And Be Kind.

Hi friends! I really hate to do this but I’m in a bind. I’ve recently moved out and the expenses of that have made things tight for me and on top of that my car tire is falling apart and I can’t afford to get it fixed and I need to do that before it pops. So now I find myself struggling to get by to my next paycheck (to the point where I’m in the negatives) and I need some help. I’m a preschool teacher and I live in SoCal so any little bit helps a lot and goes a long way.

So, if you can help in anyway possible that would be amazing!

Don’t send actors fics

Don’t give them explicit art ever

Don’t tag them in rpf questions or theories

Don’t try to bring them into fandom drama of any kind

Don’t hold them responsible for what the producers and writers decide

Don’t bring them your discourse about characters.

Don’t bring them into your shipping wars.

No matter how much interaction they have with fans, they aren’t your friend. They are the content creator and you are the fan.

Yes, hold the people responsible for writing and creating content responsible for things that are racist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, classist, etc. And encourage them to do better.

THEY WILL FIND US.

You don’t have to send things to them. The fact that fanfic and fanart exist are no longer fringe-group secrets. Everyone in the entertainment industries know that fanworks exist. You don’t have to tell them. You don’t have to tell them that some of it is explicit; you don’t have to tell them that a lot is not. You don’t have to show them that some is adorably cute.

If they’re interested, they’ll seek it out. Don’t inflict fanworks and fandom drama on them; you don’t know what squicks them, what reminds them of some personal trauma - and what they are contractually, legally required not to acknowledge. (Or what they are legally required to report to someone else, which is worse.)

A couple years ago an instructor at my college who taught basic programming courses for game design majors posted on his facebook that a bunch of his incoming freshmen didn’t know how to create a zip file. 

A lot of public schools dropped their computer literacy courses in the early 2000s because they just assumed kids would “learn it at home.” There’s a whole generation of kids who only know how to navigate a touchscreen phone/tablet. They’ve never used a laptop or desktop.

Pudge the fish got a peanut butter sandwich every Thursday. Nani does not argue the logic of feeding him, only suggests an alternative sandwich when they are out of peanut butter. Lilo was allowed to take as many photos of whatever mundane or odd subjects as she wanted and Nani would get them developed. Nani recognized what were important habits for Lilo.

When Lilo asks for a pet lobster, Nani does not tell her that lobsters are not pets. She tells her, “We don’t have a lobster door, we have a dog door.” She makes sure the woman at the pound does not tell Lilo that “Stitch is not a real name”.

NANI SPENDS THE ENTIRE MOVIE MAKING SURE THAT LILO NEVER FEELS LIKE HER IDEAS ARE WRONG.

And half of her terror of losing Lilo isnt even just losing her family; its knowing that wherever Lilo goes, they won’t know how to do these things. They won’t understand her. 

It’s not just a habit. It’s a very real part of Lilo’s healing process and Nani understands that.

Also if you pay attention to Nani’s room you’ll notice she had surfing posters and trophies. She was very much on her way to being a pro surfer but had to give it up to become the adult Lilo needed her to be.

And not ONCE does Nani show her sister any resentment. It’s worth it to keep her family together. This is a young woman who is willing to sacrifice all of her dreams and make incredibly grown up decisions.
